California. Duh.
Morgan has never looked comfortable taking pens, either in shootouts or during a game. It's one of the place s where having Rapinoe out there would be nice.

I’m watching on a second screen on mute, was the first service not way offside? What am I missing. (I’m also a little drunk)

Yeah, this is the kind place where Vlatko falls short.

Morgan is 12/16 in her NWSL career - just average. She’s 3/3 for the USWNT, meaning she’s not the regular taker.

Soph Smith is already 4/4 in her career.

Vlatko can be too deferential to his veterans and not ruthless enough.

Her arm was past the defender, but because you can't score with your arm, it doesn't matter. A part of your body that can score has to be past the defender.

Morgan’s penalty should have earned her a red card. Everything about it was pathetic. No power, no placement, and she may as well have put a cone on the ground where she was aiming for how hard she telegraphed it. Good lord.0

That surprised me too. You could really tell in advance where she was going to kick that. I would have thought at that level the deception would be better.

I thought the shoulder was past too, but it might have been the camera angle now that I see it again.

A reminder that when the US beat Thailand 13-0 in the last World Cup, it was only 3-0 at the half. The opponents get gassed chasing the ball for 90 minutes, I suspect Vietnam will as well.

That US team was imo vastly better than this version though. And Vietnam’s keeper is pretty bad ass it seems.

This US team aren’t as overpowering as they have been in the past and every game even against inferior teams will likely be a bit of a challenge. It’s not a massacre they’ll run through lesser teams anymore. The world has caught up.

If it matters I think the semifinals would be the best this team can reach and if they do so I’d consider it a great tourney.

The US has so much flexibility. They can pull Morgan for a creative mid, slide Smith to the middle, and present a new look with just as much threat.

The US won’t be able to bully the NL like they did the Vietnamese players. They’ll have to be much, much sharper on Weds.

Smith had a dream debut. I really liked the distribution from Ertz & Girma. Having 2 CBs that can spray the ball around creates possibilities.
