Quoting myself, sorry...

The Netherlands in a big hole before they even play a game, Israel is already 2-0 and they have to beat out them or the host South Koreans.
Now that the Netherlands has shut out South Korea, South Korea are the ones on the brink. A Netherlands win against Taipei will advance both them and Israel and eliminate South Korea, pretty surprising, I guess.

Great game in progress between the Netherlands and Chinese Taipei. CT had their first lead of the WBC early, but the Netherlands flexed their muscle and opened up a 4-2 lead. However, CT rallied against Lars Huijer, brother of former Sox prospect Swen Huijer, and took a 5-4 lead. Huijer is melting down a bit, having surrendered a two-run HR, two singles, an HBP, and threw behind another guy. Former Sox prospect Chih-Hsien Chang has two hits on the day. CT is playing with a lot of emotion.

Also, Xander was robbed of a hit on a very nice sliding catch by Che-Hsuan Lin. Lin just had a chance with the bases loaded but flew out to LF.

There
And per Gameday, the Netherlands won it 6-5 on Profar's bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 9th.
Which sealed the deal for both Israel and Team Honkbal to advance, as they're 2-0 and Korea & Taiwan are 0-2.

Xander & Co are coming to Tokyo.

Dammit, why did I look at this thread? I'm watching it now on mlbn. Netherlands down by a run. Really fun game. The "Dutch" may be done in by their pitching eventually. Taipei looks so much stronger against them than they did against the "Israeli" pitchers (i.e., former mlb and present mlb guys).
Since the "Dutch" guys apparently speak English, Dutch and Papiamento, I wonder what language they use on the field, in the clubhouse?

Odds of Israel and Netherlands BOTH making it out of that group must have been incredibly high.

As a Jew (and with Panama again being eliminated in a pretournament held here) I am rooting for Israel. And with the loosey goosey interpretaions, even I could have played on the team. (not that anyone would have wanted me to).

I don't think it's just that. Americans are pretty psyched by gymnasts and figure skaters every four years.
And then they promptly cease to care about international competitions until there is another Olympics. I have been called an idiot for going to see rowing competitions. And this isn't just about Olympic sports either: most people think minor league teams are a waste of time too.

The sad truth is that most Americans are really interested in fame and stardom rather than patriotism or sport. The Olympics are popular because they are popular.

All 3 of them. Pretty laidback team, if you play baseball in the netherlands at the higher levels you will pick up some Papiamento. They all speak english and most would have learned dutch at school. Mix and match [emoji4]

Does that gain them any advantage over the Netherlands in the next round? I tried to figure this out earlier today and couldn't, but I'm sure someone here knows. Maybe they get to bat second when they play again?

Doesn't look like it. They both go into the same second-round group. Israel have the all-important mental edge now though!

Paul Severino kept saying that the game was for seeding, but he never explained how. Don't know if the next round is also round robin, in which case how would seeding work? Abbey's idea sounds right.

Right, so the two pool winners are the home team twice and the road team once, and the two runners-up are the home team once and the away team twice.

But since they're all playing in Japan, 'home team' and 'road team' aren't really the correct terms, so it's what I guessed above, they get last licks twice instead of once. Thanks for the clarification.

Is Dale Sveum (sp?) coaching 3rd for the Dominican? Bautista was out by like 3 steps.

First and second, no outs, Cano up. Swings at the first pitch he sees and pops out. Maybe he has dinner plans?

Edit: Followed by an absolute bomb by Bautista.

Tremendous finish as Italy gets five in the ninth off Roberto Osuna and Oliver Perez to beat Mexico.

Exciting baseball on March 9 is a good thing.

I couldn't stay awake for this Did they explain how Tommy Layne is Italian?
Mom seems to be:

"Once Layne decided he’d participate, the question became: For which country?

“There’s a big Italian family on my mom’s side,’’ the Yankees’ lefty reliever said of his Sicilian heritage. “I figured I’d make my aunts, uncles, grandma and everybody proud.’’"

Colombia takes a 2-0 lead in the 5th on Team America after three rockets after Leyland took Archer out.

The way US' offense looks and the opposing pitching that might be game. Would be a massive upset.

Archer out of the game after 4, replaced by Givens, Baltimore reliever. He gave up two runs. It would have been interesting to see Tito Polo (CF for Colombia) try to catch the ball that went to the wall over Jones' head.

Does Polo look good? He was one of the two prospects the Yankees got from the Pirates for Ivan Nova last year, but he's not on any top 30 lists or almost ever mentioned.

Who does Colombia have to pitch after Quintana? It's a shame Quintana can only go 6 tops here, he is dominating.

Polo has had interesting routes to the ball - a few 180 and 360 spins - and gobbled everything up.

Many of the international players are coming off winter ball while it's still spring training for Team USA guys. The timing just isn't there.
This is the main reason it's hard for me to care much about this, apologies to those here who are much more into it.

Brandon Crawford gets the first hit for the US with two outs in the 6th, Quintana hits his pitch limit and is pulled.

Abbey, I understand your point of view, but this stuff is very entertaining, and since I've been in a bad move since the election, it's really hitting the spot for me.

Yeah, that was a very exciting play to score the tying run, Arenado is certainly fully into it.

I take a shower and offense arrives.

I should remember that for the regular season.
No 65 pitch limits in the regular season, thankfully (I'm not arguing against them here, it makes total sense, I just don't like the game that results).
