There's a nice article in the New York Times about Familia's use of the quick-pitch, which he'd learned from LaTroy Hawkins. I was again impressed with the stuff about the Royals scouting:

However, it was Gordon himself who recognized the quick-pitch, when he saw Familia use it against Perez. Since Gordon uses just a toe tap rather than a big leg kick, he was able to get to the pitch that had flummoxed a lot of other hitters. In late September, when the Yankees were playing the Mets at Citi Field, the Royals put five scouts in the stands to watch the games because both teams were potential postseason opponents.. .
The scouts, who then followed the Mets through the playoffs, marked down virtually everything the team did, like a third baseman’s looping throws, the holes in a slugger’s swing, and how long each pitcher took to deliver the ball.
