derekson said:So did CC Sabathia get lap band surgery or something? That's a dramatic weight loss for one offseason, especially from a guy who has ALWAYS carried a ton of weight. Add in the bizarre comment from his agent a few months ago claiming that he hadn't lost any weight but just converted fat to muscle and the whole situation seems very abnormal for a professional athlete.

jon abbey said:CC looked like a black Pettitte, he definitely has enough stuff to be successful even if his velocity doesn't come back. He topped out at 88 today, FWIW.

Sabathia insists, “I was not stubborn last year.” He did not try, in other words, to reach back and get fastballs from a bygone day. He conceded knowing in many starts last year that he just did not have a good fastball, certainly not the one that has distinguished his brilliant career.
It's McCann's fault. From the article:terrynever said:McCann liked what he saw today. 31 strikes in 36 pitches. Lohud claims Nova is 6-foot-7 but he's listed at 6-4 on the roster. Maybe he grew 3 inches in the offseason.

Uh oh. Maybe McCann has a vision problem!Freddy Linn said:It's McCann's fault. From the article:
"There's not many 6-7 guys that are able to get the ball to do what he does", McCann said.
Edit: phone
Which of the three is the riskiest to trade, in terms of coming back to haunt you? I suspect only Murphy. Not counting Sanchez in that trio.jon abbey said:Catcher depth is always nice, but Gary Sanchez is in AA now also, they're starting to get a little clogged and I don't think they need all three of the guys listed above in addition to McCann.
jon abbey said:The Yankees really need to trade a catcher (Romine or Cervelli or JR Murphy) for an infielder, ideally one who can play 1B and 3B, 2B would be nice also.
Right now their first baseman if the recovering Teixeira isn't available is, um, Kelly Johnson? What's the problem there? Well, he has a total of 18 IP played at 1B total in his MLB career and is also the current starting 3B.

I don't think that trade is out there. Romine is a backup catcher. He would get you another Scott Sizemore in return. If Tex goes down, we aren't looking for someone who can play just play 1B, we are looking to replace 30+ HRs from 1B. That's going to require a bigger trade with added salary.jon abbey said:The Yankees really need to trade a catcher (Romine or Cervelli or JR Murphy) for an infielder, ideally one who can play 1B and 3B, 2B would be nice also.

Wake's knuckle said:Actually, you are looking to replace about 800 OPS from a guy who takes most of his hacks from the left side in the new Yankee Launch Pad. This is probably less difficult than you think.
I'm with you there, but I just don't see who that would be or where he would be placed on the roster. It's amazing how the game has changed since steroid testing. Ten years ago, there were .800 OPS corner infielders/outfielders falling out of the sky.jon abbey said:
Maybe I'm scarred by watching 500 PAs of Lyle Overbay and his .688 OPS last year, but I'd prefer to have an actual second option in the organization before Opening Day if at all possible.
terrynever said:Soriano is being asked to take a few reps at first base now that he's over the flu. Brought his own first baseman's mitt to ST. Not a bad idea. Originally an infielder, of course.
Maybe he's the next Phelps, multiple innings, etc. Not sure where that leaves Phelps.jon abbey said:If he does end up as the clearly second best pitcher in the pen behind Robertson (and if he doesn't, it's going to be an ugly season), I hope Girardi doesn't confine him to one inning at a time as the 8th inning guy, as he definitely can go multiple innings when necessary.
jon abbey said:Sempo, maybe you should be a Dodgers fan.
terrynever said:I would love to see the Yankees turn into a power pitching staff over the next two years.
They are indeed currently reigning in spending. Are they also reining in spending?Sampo Gida said:
Dodgers already reigning in spending. They don't have the financial clout of the Yankees who are cash flush after the YES deal and the new stadiums high ticket prices. Yankees payroll is down to 2008 levels, or about 30% down in nominal dollars. They can afford Drew and Morales if needed (dont need Morales yet). Both would be tradable commodities if they wanted to dump salary when Arod returns.
