Chase Headley is about to join the Yankees. Yankees are finalizing a deal to acquire him from the Padres.

I am going to hate this deal if they give up any real prospects, he is a FA at the end of the year.

He has better numbers in July at least, .323 BA, .785 OPS.

Damn you, Rosenthal. I looked up those numbers myself.

Hopefully it's for Refsnyder.  The Padres have a hole at 2B.

Hopefully this means they dump Brian Roberts and move Kelly Johnson back to his natural position of 2B.

Looking at Headley's career trajectory, he looks a bit like Morgan Ensberg (and they were teammates in 2007). Ensberg ended up on the Yankees the next season. Hopefully he's as good as Ensberg.

I'm curious what his trade value is at this point..

De Paula has been disappointing since moving to high A last year, but he has a high ceiling. I just hate giving up prospects for stopgaps, this team isn't going anywhere anyway.

I guess I'm in the minority, but if Headley is healthy I think this is a pretty good pickup for the Yankees.  He was injured earlier in year so again, if healthy, he's better than those numbers.  He's also going from Petco to Yankee Stadium and is a lefty.  And he's filling a major need for them.

They have been rumored to be after Headley for a few years now, so perhaps this is a tryout and then they will try to sign him to a cheap deal in the offseason. Unless ARod really is going to play third next year.

What need is that?

3B?  That entire infield is a disaster.  He might be the most valuable infielder they have now.  OPS+ last year of 115, and Yankee stadium is probably a perfect fit for him.

I think this is a pretty good deal for San Diego. Even when struggling de Paula still has great K rates and solarte is at least a useful backup IMO.

Yep he's going to a perfect stadium for him. How is his defense?

So are Ellsbury and McCann, who have 8 and 10 home runs respectively....

His walk rate is way down this year but he is striking out at his "normal" rate - no walks in the last 16 games, so who knows if his recent better BA is sustainable.  But, this is the only kind of trade the Yankees can make if they don't want to give away their handful of higher upside guys in A and AA - they just are not going to be in the market for higher impact trade options I don't think...

De Paula might be something,I'll take JA word on that, but I think is a pretty good move. And as PotS says, they may also try to resign him in the offseason.

Padres sold too late on Headley. Nice pickup for the Yankees; I suspect the pitching moves are to come

If he hits well in the second half I would imagine he will use that to get a pretty nice 3 or 4 year deal from someone no?
I mean it might be from NY but I don't think he will go somewhere for small change if he hits well

I think Headley could easily put together a good half season for the Yankees.  It doesn't seem to be a ton of cost.

Then there's the A-Rod issue.

If he can hit at all, the MFY would probably be well-served to bring Headley back next year and have Slappy, Tex and Headley share time at 1b/3b.  The likelihood that one of the three of them is hurt at any given time is pretty good.

Two months, .499 OPS in 117 PAs since May 24 (he raked in AAA for a week in there).

Although that would be an upgrade for the Padres offense

Honestly, I think the Padres did him a real favor here. Headley was in a really weird spot, because his season hasn't been worth a QO but the Padres might have given one anyway. He's in a much better situation now.

from the mlbtr write-up:

He batted a whopping .286/.376/.498 with 31 homers to go along with elite defense and solid baserunning in 2012, but since that time he’s been slowed by a fractured thumb, a calf strain and a herniated disc in his back (for which he received an epidural injection earlier this month). He’s hitting .323 with a homer, a triple and four doubles this month, so perhaps the injection helped to ease some of the pain he was experiencing. However, he’s yet to walk in July and has struck out 16 times, so his approach at the plate certainly doesn’t appear to be what it was in 2012 when he posted a career-best 12.3 percent walk rate.

This is a funny juxtaposition of phrases, makes it sound like he is bedridden:

This may have cost Pablo Sandoval some money as well. The Giants will almost certainly extend a QO to him. Pablo may find himself in Drew's situation this offseason.

So I have a Chrome word filter that changes "resign" to "quit", and the end of that sentence had a bit of Brokeback feel to it until I remembered about the plugin. The filter is also fun for changing Jeter>Jeteybear, "get a gun" to "I pee in my mouth", and so on.

NYY didn't have to give up much to trade for a Kelly Johnson clone with less power (Headley's 2012 screams "outlier"), and he's only two years younger.

So you're saying there's a chance the Padres would have given Headley a qualifying offer of around $15 million next year.

I'm here to tell you there is no chance.

Well, technically they could be described as selling in this deal.  Solarte is a league average bat, so he's been better than Headley and they added a prospect in DePaula while getting money back from San Diego. :)
