How can we agree on that when we don’t know what he offered from day 1? He was asking for 7/$200 or whatever and settles for 5/$125 with a likely to be exercised opt out, DD certainly won.
I was stating that in comparison to the expected notion that there was ever a chance JDM was going to end up here at 5/$100m without an opt out.

MLB network just reported it as including 2 opt outs.

What is the again?

I’m just saying if you want to characterize the deal properly, it is a 2 year, $50 million deal, with the player guaranteed an additional $60 million for injury or regression.

We can argue that’s good or bad. To me, a $60 million guarantee is a lot to pay to motivate a guy who just signed for 2/50. I hope he’s great for two years. At least we get an exclusive window if he is.
The "again" is the opt out discussion in general. Not necessarily you

What would a 'good' JDM deal have looked like to you, mate?
Don’t get me wrong — I’m delighted if this turns out to be a 2/50 contract. That’s what we’re all rooting for, right? Because if it turns out to be a 5/110, then that means he wasn’t worth that much on the market.

I was hoping for 5/125.

Two opt outs is interesting. From the team’s perspective, it seems to me that if you’re going to have any, it’s better to have two.

I think there’s an excellent chance he plays here in year 3 and 4.

I don't understand your previous under-enthusiasmic reactions then, because if you wanted 5/125 and it's 5/110 with the option of him playing so well in that first 2 years he actually decides to make it 2/50 (potentially) then, how is that worse?

I'd have been happy with 2/60, or even more. Years are way more important than the extra 10 million for the future of the team.

I get that, but you’re basing your judgment of DD based on chat board speculation and leaked rumors. It’s not exactly a strong base to say someone folded or blinked. We know Boras was publicly asking for 7/$200+. He settled for 5/&110. If you consider an option a plus or minus is kind of irrelevant when assessing how well he did, since we have no idea if he had one on the table from the start or not. We also know he was the one that insisted on it Price’s deal.

As someone else noted, your anti DD bias is quite blatant. Considering this as anything but a win, with what we actually know - not notions or speculations or rumors - is laughable.

What if the market is exactly like it is this year, but he's two years old and 2 years further removed from being a bad outfielder?
I mean, no one else wanted him this year, so he wasn't worth much on the market.

Last 4 years, outfielders only, sorted by offensive WAR:

View attachment 19707

Stanton is two years younger and not a complete liability in the field, but on the other side of the coin he does have $295m remaining guaranteed, opt out after 3 years and a full no trade.

Stanton is also a bit more variable than JDM in terms of performance, though that could be attributed to leg injuries.
Nevertheless, the fact that JDM is highly comparable to Stanton suggests that a 2-year 25/year deal (with a 3/60 player option) is a pretty solid FA contract.

Stanton, on his 13 year/325 contract, also required giving up two B/C level prospects and a 27 year old MLB 2B/SS who hit 110 wRC+ last year and has two years left on a favorable deal.

Source confirms others, Red Sox and J.D. Martinez have agreed to a 5/110 deal. He makes $50 million in the first two years, or $72 million through the first three years. He can opt out after year 2 or 3.

So, could be 25, 25, 22, 20, 18
So if he opts out after year 2, AAV resets to 25M. If he opts out after year 3, AAV resets to 24M. Sox will want to maintain a 3M buffer under the top luxury tax threshold for planning purposes.

I'm fine with him having the ability to opt out after 2 (and 3). I'm guessing the Sox will hit the reset button hard after 2019.

Yeah, 2/60 would have been great. It’s the $90 million in additional guaranteed money that the Sox had to pay to get the 2/50 deal that I don’t like. 5/125 would cost more but I’d rather the Sox pay $15 million to capture upside than guarantee $90 million to get two years.

I’m pedaling my own bike in circles here on what player options mean and have already been chastised once so will just let it go. I hope he mashes.

Edit: $60m not $90m obviously.

MikeM: You're a top shelf poster, IMO. But you're moving some goalposts here, and I think it's fair to (gently) call you out.

If I've understood you, your position *had* been that the Moreland signing was a disaster because it meant that Dombrowski would never sign JDM (because Moreland was obviously signed to start over Hanley at 1B, and Hanley would never be benched, traded, or released), and thus DD was going to waste another season of our window without adding a big bat. A lot of people (me very much included) disagreed. Then it was that JDM would never sign here for $150m (or something like that).

Well, he's added a big bat, and for less than $150m. Now all of a sudden, the opt out is what you're latching onto?

C'mon man. I think you should probably admit that Dombrowski did a good job reading the market, and Boras is not the Bond villain he likes to market himself as.

So, who gets traded?
My prediction? Holt.

Thank God it is finally over. Can we finally stop talking about JDM. This has got to be the longest thread I've seen in a long time.

I think Hanley gets DFA'd now.

There isn't another obvious hole they need to fill by moving someone out of their starting lineup.

Stole this from someone named Joon Lee...He hits a lot to right field. On the other hand, Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper always said that right field is the "hot field" at Chase. Maybe he adjusted.

this is new, two opt-outs?
One interesting lesson from all of this is that the JDM/Boras grossly overestimated the market for JDM this year (I mean, they went from 7/210 to 5/110, which is only slightly more total value than the Boston initial offer, excluding these opt-outs). I suspect the two opt-outs are to provide security for when JDM opts out; the lack of a fit this season was obvious from the start. Only a handful of competitors needed an elite bat-only player, including the red sox.
https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/j-d-martinez-is-worth-the-price/
By having two opt-outs, JD gains the option of waiting another year to see if the market opens up.

I'll stand by my pre-Nunez prediction of an Elias DFA for the immediate 40 man space, but a trade seems likely during ST.

So now that he is officially a Red Sox, signed to a better deal than any of us predicted, can we flip the switch and love him now? This team got undeniably better, definitely doesn't need to pay Hanley $22 mil in 2019(JD, even at his "frontloaded deals" only 3 mil more??) and is much closer to a WS today than they were yesterday. If Benintendi and Devers break out(I have irrationally high hopes for Devers this season) this team can compete with anybody.

And Nunez at 4 mil for next season?? DD did a pretty good job

I believe he's always been a guy that hits to all fields as opposed to a pull power hitter. Not only was Chase field probably "hot" to RF, but we have to keep in mind that the cold weather at Fenway in April/May can suppress HRs. Thus, the balls won't necessarily land in the same spots when hitting in a dome compared to Fenway. I can picture him poking some balls out to RF at Yankee Stadium quite easily though.

I haven't even digested the idea of this contract with 2 opt outs long enough to form an overall opinion on it yet. Other then the fact, and which I believe you yourself were in the same boat, I wasn't really rooting on the general idea of adding JDM on to our books to begin with.

As for what I'm currently basing an evaluation on whether DD blinked here, Olney's tweet reporting that he did indeed do so as of 48 hours ago strikes me as being fairly reliable. He might of still walked out with the perceived win that a lot of people were hoping for, but he did make a somewhat notable blink in the process of getting it.

It was already clear for a while now that Boras was walking out of this a big loser on the $200m initial asking price front.

How does dealing Holt play into the Martinez-Ramirez-Moreland-Benintendi-Bradley traffic jam?
I guess it’s setting up to be a straight Hanley/Moreland 1B platoon with Martinez at DH for now. Injuries have a way of sorting things sometimes.

25 man is now:

12 pitchers

Infield:
Vaz
Catcher #2
Hanley
Moreland
Nunez
X
Holt
Devers
(Pedroia)

Outfield
JDM
Benintendi
JBJ
Mookie

So they carry Marrero or Tzu-Wei or someone until Pedey is back and then they're all set.

Holt can back up the outfield in left, anyway, as can Tzu-Wei while Pedey is out and if someone gets hurt once he's back. Hanley and Moreland platoon at first (one of them will get hurt at some point anyway).

How does dealing Holt play into the Martinez-Ramirez-Moreland-Benintendi-Bradley traffic jam?
DH: Martinez 450 PA, Ramirez 200 PA
1B: Ramirez 200 PA, Moreland 500 PA
LF: Benintendi 500 PA, Martinez 200 PA
CF: Bradley 600 PA, Benintendi 100 PA

Assuming a four man bench, this leaves one of Moreland/Ramirez as a PH.

Bench:
2 Leon S
3/PH Moreland/Ramirez L/R
2/3/4/5/7/9 Swihart S
4/5/6 Marrero or Lin (Lin also plays CF).

After Pedroia returns Marrero is DFA'd or Lin optioned, and Nunez takes that utility role.

Holt loses his job to Marrero/Lin/Nunez to save (net) ~ $1.5m AAV.
Brentz is probably DFA'd. Marco is AAA depth.

Stole this from someone named Joon Lee...He hits a lot to right field. On the other hand, Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper always said that right field is the "hot field" at Chase. Maybe he adjusted.

JDM has elite batted ball velocity. He's not as good a complete hitter as prime-aged Manny Ramirez, but he has that kind of opposite field power. He'll put balls in bullpens.

Merloni(I don't think he sucks you may disagree) says no one needs to be traded and Hanley will be the everyday 1B with Moreland as bench depth.

Edit: It's Merloni, former PawSox utility guy not Merlono.

This deal further cements Ben Cherington's prior signings as...well...bad. Even without the power of hindsight. Hanley Ramirez was 4 years for 88, while Pablo was 5 for 95.

Hell, in comparison to Nunez at 2/8, Cherington signed an aging AJP at 1/8, and stephen drew for 10M in the middle of a season.
