Well, it’s dumb because:
- Gordon probably won’t play for the full season unless he gets paid. And the Pats aren’t going to pay a RB huge dollars, particularly to a position of strength.
- Gordon has been a sub-4.0 per attempt every year except for last year, where he was an excellent 5.1. Are we betting that 2018 is something different?
- Gordon’s greatest strength is in the passing game where the Pats are stocked with White and Burkhead, and that’s before considering any improvement from Sony. Who happens to be in a rookie deal.
- These holdouts make sense from a market correction standpoint for RBs, but the Pats just haven’t invested huge dollars there. The last time the Pats paid “big” money for an outside player in this situation was Revis. But CB is fundamentally less replaceable than RB.
- When was the last time the Pats went out a grabbed a team’s marquee skill player? Randy Moss? I just don’t see them playing Madden when their entire philosophy has been much more deliberate.
- That’s to say nothing of how the Chargers should handle the situation. Why do they have to do something now? They have other guys on their roster and can easily wait until some contender loses their bell cow for the season.
But aside from that, maybe we can try to get Mahomes when he’s got a year left of his rookie deal.
