Well there’s your 1B. Chaim is obsessed with positional versatility so makes sense he gets a guy who likely will play the majority of games at first but can also play OF.

Not the direction I would have gone, but okay. Is he healthy? Can he actually play first?

edit: baseball-reference has him with 1 game and 0.0 Innings at first base back in 2017, whatever that means.

#8 ranked prospect according to Soxprospects (should be 9 because Mayer isn't in their rankings).

#12 according to fangraphs

That seems somewhat steep for a rental who's currently on the IL (yes, I know he should be back in 1-2 weeks) and doesn't really solve the 1B need? With that said, Schwarber was absolutely mashing in the month leading up to his hamstring injury.

He was leading off for Nationals for a while. Any thoughts where he bats in Boston?

Given the extra year of potential control on Schwarber, Ramirez is a fine trade piece. Bello is the only thing close to an untouchable pitcher in the system.

He's signed through next year (mutual option). $11.5 mill per, 3 mill buyout.

Yankees gave up a 50FV and 45+FV for Rizzo and some money.

We gave up 40+FV for Schwarber.

Rizzo and Schwarber are both rentals. Schwarber's not going to exercise his option. He's going to get much more in FA.

He’s also good JDM opt-out insurance but I doubt he’s the first base guy going forward. Gotta be at least Cordero or Dalbec going out in another trade.

Only 28, ton of pop in the bat. Could see him as a potential DH replacement when JD is gone. He started as a catcher, i'm sure he has played a little 1B

Schwarber is as much of a 1b as Franchy. I think he'll play LF and platoon with Renfroe unless they want to send Duran down, make Verdugo the permanent CF and Kike the permanent 2b.

They still need a 1b (and there's still time to trade for one).

I’m seeing conflicting things in the contract. Is he a free agent after this year or do we have him for ‘22?

I think there’s a mutual option but if it’s declined does he go to arbitration one last time or is he a FA?

So prospects.com on Aldo Ramirez:
Summation: Potential back-end starter. Ceiling of a mid-rotation starter. Very interesting young arm with a strong track record of performance in the low minors against age-advanced competition. Has advanced feel for his age and has a solid chance to remain a starter. Has always thrown strikes and shows the early makings of a three-pitch mix, all with at least average potential. Does not stand out physically, but still young enough that he could grow some more. One of the more intriguing low minors arms in the system, but has a long way to go between what he is now and what he could be in the future.

Early July...

"Felt a pop"
"MRI showed significant strain"

Grade 2 probably 6 week range.... hopefully that's all it is.

Schwarber has an $11.5M mutual option in 2022 ($3M buyout). I hope Bloom knows what Schwarber wants to do with it.

But then there would be even fewer people to play 1B.

I’ve watched him a lot this year. He did very little and then caught absolute fire for a month. If he can play first, this will be a good pickup, if not, I hope one or our outfielders can learn. Seems likely to me that he is our DH next year.

Could be Kike to 1b, Verdugo/Renfroe platoon in right, Duran in center and Schwarber to LF in Fenway.

Not enamored of it at first blush because the defense could nullify the offensive improvement quite a bit but I'm sure it will make sense eventually if other shoes drop.

That's also quite a bit to give up if he only plays 40-ish games. Grade 2 strains are rough too, so there is no guarantee he will even be healthy.

Cliff Floyd acquired from the Expos. Never plays 1B.
Kyle Schwarber acquired from the Expos Nationals. To be determined...

So he plays first base as well as Franchy. Not even available until mid August. Color me unimpressed.
