interesting

910 OPS with 25 homers. Welcome to Boston!

Worth noting he had a .716 OPS on June 12th then hit 16 HRs in 17 games to push it over 900.

There was some talk about how the sticky crackdown may have helped him be able to handle the high fastball that had been an issue for him.

Schwarber won't be able to play until mid-August. He'll probably need a rehab assignment after all that time off. I assume he'll play a little 1B in his rehab assignment.

He'll decline that option at the end of the year, so we are basically getting him for about 5 weeks of regular season, plus playoffs (assuming we qualify.)
He can play LF in Fenway, DH and presumably play some first base in the same way that Franchy has been playing some first base.

Looks like a lot of late inning defensive switches - Dalbec, Mahwin, Santana. All I can think of.

I kind of hope they move him tomorrow for a 1B or a SP, not gonna lie, if that’s allowed under MLB rules. I don’t want him playing the wall at all, and I like JD at DH even for next year. Not sure how passable defensively KS would be at 1B with almost zero experience.

Yeah not sure this is about 1B.
Hopefully not.

Don’t know how he’d push Renfroe into a platoon situation Seems like he’s graduated from that. He’s hit them to the tune of a .339 wOBA since he put it together on 5/1, with plus defense.

JD may not share your feelings about him playing DH for the Sox next year.

This is a deeply weird move: an injured, positionless player for one of our few SP prospects who didn't need to be added to the 40-man yet.

I have a deep, deep hatred for anything Cub, and yet I've always loved Schwarber. I love watching him hit. I've been surprised that he didn't try to play more at 1B over the years, because he isn't much in left. Hopefully, he'll be passable at first, because the dude is going to mash.
Schwarber wasn't going to displace Rizzo at 1st with the Cubs

Hopefully not. Seems like Renfroe had graduated from being a platoon guy to me, though. He’s hit them to the tune of a .339 wOBA since he put it together on 5/1, with plus defense.
Renfroe isn't a platoon guy and he's great in right. If this ends up being for the OF, it means that Verdugo moves to center and Kike plays first or second.

Cliff Floyd acquired from the Expos. Never plays 1B.
Kyle Schwarber acquired from the Expos Nationals. To be determined...

FWIW, hasn't started a game at C since his rookie season.

I can’t think of a better configuration right now but it’s terrible. Kiké has the most defensive runs saved in MLB playing center. Who moves that guy to first base?

25 HR and 900 OPS? 2.2 WAR this year and higher than Rizzo

and people are acting like we just traded for some no name scrub.

He can work on 1B during rehab and his bat will play anywhere

Well, Schwarber absolutely crushes right-handed pitching, so that's something. He has a career split OPS of .873 against righties, considerably higher this season. He's acceptable against lefties, but would make a lot of sense as a platoon partner for Dalbec.

BR says he played one game at 1st but 0.0 innings. What does that mean he stood there for one batter who reached and then left the game?
Double switched through?

edit: it happened in this game. Schwarber switched positions with Rizzo in the eleventh inning of a tie game, in what looks like some weird Joe Maddon scheme, and then Ryan Braun scored the walkoff run on a wild pitch.

In addition to the fact that we have no idea whether he can play first, Schwarber seems like a strange move. He is out at least two more weeks. In that time the Sox play 6 of their next 12 against the Rays.

My guess is extra innings where his pitcher lost the game without retiring a batter.

Seems like Bloom might be planning to send Duran somewhere before the deadline.

He moves from LF to 1b in the 11th inning of a tie game. First pitch after that was a wild pitch and a run scored. Game over.

He was arguably the hottest hitter on the planet before he got hurt. I know he’s been active in the Nats dugout during his time off so I don’t know if that is a good sign as far as how he feels now but he seems to be a guy universally loved by teammates. He was pretty bad in Chicago last year but if you’re willing to write the COVID season off he’s a legit 825-900 OPS guy. Hopefully a move to 1B helps protect his health as well, the hamstring is his second significant leg injury of his career

Hmm, maybe you guys are right and Bloom hasn't thought about where Schwarber will play. He just traded for him without realizing that he hasn't ever really played first base. Someone send Bloom a link to this thread to alert him!
Oh no too late! We're stuck with Schwarber and Bloom now is probably scribbling lineups on a napkin trying to figure out how to use him. Too bad he didn't have some sort of plan before trading for him.

Schwarber - just look at his b-ref page - has really good power. Doesn't hit for much average.

Last 5 seasons: .232/.334/.493/.827, 116 ops+ 130 hr in 1,835 ab (14.1 ab per homer)

Meanwhile, Dalbec last 2 seasons: .225/.282/.438/.720, 91 ops+ 18 hr in 347 ab (19.3 ab per homer)

I make the comparison assuming Schwarber is slated for 1b.

SSSS (super small sample size) but 24 games, 79 plate appearances for .981 OPS in post season appearances.

It's striking that the counter-move was DFAing Workman instead of optioning Franchy, whose role on the roster Schwarber seems closest to.

All of which happened in a three week period. He's been remarkably up and down for his career. He's probably already had the up part of this season.
