So with Harbaugh getting a 2nd interview with the falcons, is there a chance that Bill has no seat when the music stops?

Hard to know how real this all is and/or whether Harbaugh is using it as leverage for the LAC, but if I was Bill I wouldn't be super excited to be in a position of selling myself to ATL. His resume speaks for itself. Hire me or don't but let's not have the dog and pony show.

The challenge for Bill is that the Rooney Rule requires there be a process. He can’t even really say “If you want me you can’t make a big deal out of interviewing the other candidates.” So once they have to bring in other people they are going to bring in people they are interested in and then who knows?

Is that a problem? Bill seems like the type who would think, if they like someone else better than it wasn't the right fit.

I suppose if you're thinking about it like musical chairs, and he's slowly running out of attractive options...

He's had exactly one team showing interest. His resume doesn't seem to be getting him many interviews so far. Maybe he's "overqualified".

I think Blank is just being extremely thorough in his head coaching search. Which is a good thing.

Bill doesn't have to coach to feed his family, so he's likely focused only on those opportunities that he feels work best for him. No need to work for a toxic owner in Carolina, and the Tennessee job is not particularly desirable given what happened to Vrabel. He doesn't want to be on the west coast. If the Falcons job falls through, he could take a year in the broadcast circuit before a new set of jobs avails itself next year at this time.

He is 71. It is difficult for 71 year olds to get hired for anything.

He needs a team that is willing to hire a 3 or 4 year head coach. While many coaches don’t last much more than that, owners don’t exactly go into hiring thinking they affirmatively want a 4 year coach. Most want to find the next Belichick — a 20 year guy.

He needs an ideal set up with a team with a short term need and a viable succession plan. Most of these owners are business people and the pros and cons of hiring a Medicare age ceo is not an unfamiliar idea to them.

As others have said, by rule there has to be a dog and pony show. That said, Harbaugh is not just a pro forma interview, though if it ends up that he'd prefer to be in SD and BB in Atlanta, the pieces will fall into place.

I'd only add that it's true BB's resume speaks for itself. But that is both a plus and a minus. The plus element is obvious. But, given that being GM or whatever title to give control of the putative groceries does not seem to be on offer for BB, it'd be foolhardy verging on malpractice to not have conversations/interviews to ascertain if BB will put up with a GM who doesn't follow his orders. Given how insular his management has been, as great a coach as BB is his fit will be justifiably questionable in many contexts.

That said, Atlanta makes sense both for BB and for Blank, so suspect that'll happen at the end of the day.

The Rooney rule requires interviews but not multiples of the same high profile candidates accompanied by tweets, media statements, etc. None of the other HC processes is being run quite like Atlanta's. If the other pieces fit, I am sure Bill won't mind much. It just seems a little cheesey and, if not handled well with BB, something that could rub him the wrong way.

BB may only coach 3-4 more years, but part of this discussion could be about him moving into an executive role after that. He's likely bringing Berj and some other long time associates along with him. How that fits with McKay and others already in ATL is another question mark.

Florio is reporting that there are other teams sniffing around on Bill, including one team that currently doesn’t have a coaching vacancy:

Other potential suitors are lurking for Bill Belichick
Bill Belichick remains available, to any team that wants him. So far, only one team has interviewed him.

That could change.

Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, multiple teams are quietly considering a potential run at Belichick. At least one currently has a head-coaching vacancy. At least one currently does not.

If Bill isn't going to ATL it will be interesting, because I think there are spots he has no interest in (CAR, WAS maybe LA), and some of the rebuilds won't want him either.

I wonder if people could throw enough money at him to be the defensive coordinator on a contender. Kinda like Admiral Kirk gets sent back to being captain Kirk.

I think he could very comfortably cruise for the next decade or so as the DC for a team with a good young QB, working 1/2 the hours with 1/3 responsibility he has now. Dick LeBeau was still the DC of Tennessee at age 80, Belichick could easily do that. If it weren't for the wins record being within reach.

Tom Moore is still the senior offensive assistant coach for Tampa Bay at 85

As far as the openings, I am having a hard time believing that Harbaugh really wants Atlanta as a first choice. His coaching future is going to be a hell of a lot longer than Bill's, and there just seems to be too many other places he could land that have more long term appeal, and that he'd appeal to a lot of them as well.

For someone like Bill it seems that a team that was 7-9 in a weak division 3 years running is just about perfect. Bring in Josh to run the offense, put in his D (unsure of defensive personnel given uncertainty elsewhere), and get to work, with a 3-4 year window to make some noise before handing over the reins. Way oversimplified for sure, but nowhere else makes nearly as much sense to me. But what do I know.

At the end of the day, I think if he wants to be a head coach, he will be a head coach somewhere. Can't see him committing to a year on the sidelines in any other capacity at this point. Full control is one thing, but I can't imagine game day control is negotiable.

I think Atlanta has a lot of positives--young talent, owner to provide unlimited resources and not known to be meddlesome, large fan base that is starved for a winner. Admittedly they don't have the QB, which is the most significant piece, but Harbaugh may see that as a problem that can be solved. Also, other things being fairly equal, maybe he would prefer the NFC so he doesn't have to face his brother. That would give Atlanta an edge over San Diego, Seattle, etc.

Just for the record, there was a post to you yesterday that said “no one likes your attitude”. I didn’t want to pour gas on the fire so I ignored it for the time. Now that everyone is calmer, I’ll say, I happen to enjoy it.

The longer this drags on the more I think ATL will hire one of the young bucks (Johnson, Slowik, McDonald). Seems like Bill just is not getting what he wants and vice versa. Pure speculation, but if it was going to work, they could have hired him already. They've done all of the required interviews.

It will be hard for Bill to take a year, but it might be the best thing for him. I then put it at 50/50 that we ever see him back on the sidelines.

I like my attitude too, but I have been pointed in my commentary to some people and if you push back against SoSH royalty who just spout like a confident, incorrect ChatGPT, it isn't appreciated. Because I am not royalty.

But I have adjusted my behavior and put the people on ignore, so there won't be any trouble going forward. My attitude has been adjusted. The problems will go away. And I will move on, but not in a pointed fashion. Declawed but happy and content.

I am Ashur. A former champion who was gravely injured and can no longer fight and is left scrapping for respect but failing.

I have spread cheeks for ramming. But If the Gods see fit, and if my mind is set to purpose, I can find glory once again in the arena. Would that you have been born a Roman and stood beside me, we could have shined together.

And you don't think Bill has sources?

Don't be silly.
Do I think he has sources in the FO of the Atlanta Falcons?

Don't be silly.

Additionally, I didn't say it was untrue. I simply said who the source for the story was because I thought that was interesting.
