It would have been smarter to kick a field goal on third.

Yeah, whether you kick or go for the touchdown, taking a timeout was the true blunder. You’re now relying on the wildly unlikely onsides attempt.

Yeah, I know but I am so rarely right I needed to have my blind squirrel moment.
It’s not so much the run call as it is the TO. Whatever time they would have lost in setting up to run the next play isn’t worse than the 40 seconds where they couldn’t stop the clock when they were out of timeouts and SF had the ball back.
They changed rules so the kickoff team can’t load a side up. It’s like 2% successful over the last couple years.

Just terrible lack of awareness to run there. You have to pass and if you don’t score you kick the FG. Either way you have to stop them from getting a first down so long as you have your TOs.
