It would have been smarter to kick a field goal on third.

And when the run didn’t work they should have just run the fourth down play even if it took 30 seconds.

Yeah, whether you kick or go for the touchdown, taking a timeout was the true blunder. You’re now relying on the wildly unlikely onsides attempt.

Timeouts were paramount.

You run a play instead of calling a timeout after the failed run and you probably have 40 seconds with 3 timeouts.

It’s not so much the run call as it is the TO. Whatever time they would have lost in setting up to run the next play isn’t worse than the 40 seconds where they couldn’t stop the clock when they were out of timeouts and SF had the ball back.
That’s what I meant. Unclear post by me.

Just terrible lack of awareness to run there. You have to pass and if you don’t score you kick the FG. Either way you have to stop them from getting a first down so long as you have your TOs.
