Very few people watched that show. Less people actually finished it. None enjoyed it. Not exactly a star making performance for Mr. Weeknd. Great house tho.

That said, the Weeknd is awesome, he's got a ton of bangers. But Taylor Swift is an entire galaxy right now. The Weeknd is Pluto.
Guess not

I Jay-Z produces the halftime show and he's riding the middle aged millennial nostalgia hard now (Dr Dre, Rihanna, Beyonce, Timberlake, Weeknd, Usher, Bruno Mars).
Bruno Mars, Beyonce and Timberlake predate Jay-Z. Since he took over it's been J-Lo and Shakira; The Weeknd; Dr. Dre et al; then Rihanna last year. I am really surprised with the popularity of country now that there hasn't been any country act if not featured then at least cameoing.
The Weeknd's show was awful but he was really hot that year so offering him that spot made sense, but I can't remember the last time Usher was relevant.

Mahomes has a cap hit of 57M and it hasn’t stopped KC yet. Almost every likely Super Bowl contender is going to have a QB with a 40M+ cap hit other than Houston and maybe 1-2 other teams.

It will hurt their ability to retain talent somewhat but that’s going to be true of most good teams so it evens out to some degree
it has not stopped KC because of kelce and reid and they have 1 of the best dc of all time

FWIW, I thought the exhibit at the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame (yeah, i know) on the production of the Super Bowl halftime show and what goes on behind the scenes was pretty cool.

What’s really important is that the NFL finally got an in-game DJ for its boring game ( about 13 minutes of action in 3 hours and usually dominated by the best QB ).

Furthermore, it’s Tiesto! I hope they feature him during the 30-second long breaks in between 5-8 second plays.

Clearly they’re saving the best for the least interesting parts — namely the vast majority of the game.

(FINALLY SOMETHING I TRULY AM AN EXPERT ON AND NOT JUST TALKING HALFWAY OUT OF MY ASS)

You joke, but Tiesto is arguably the biggest DJ in the world (Taylor Swift's ex-boyfriend, Calvin Harris is the only true competitor, though Armand Van Buuren, Diplo, and David Guetta are all up there). He's been a star for like... 25 years? He got paid something like $400,000 for a 2 hour set on Labor Day in Vegas at his residency.

It makes total sense for the first Super Bowl played in Las Vegas to have a huge name "DJing" at the game (note: he's not actually going to be DJing), but almost every stadium has in-game DJs these days (I know a lot of them!).

Lots of chatter about the practice facilities.

As the "home team" (it alternates) the Chiefs practice at the Raiders facilities, which have indoor/outdoor fields. Meanwhile the 49ers are at UNLV's facilities, which were recently resodded with natural grass and are too soft apparently.

Plus it's raining hard so overall huge advatnage Chiefs.

you’re missing the point though. Just about every good team, unless they’re very lucky to have a guy on a rookie contract, is going to have a huge chunk of cap tied up in the QB position. So it should mostly even out. And in the playoffs, those super expensive QB’s tend to make a difference in the small game sample size that is the road to the Super Bowl

So what exactly is he doing then? Is it all scripted and he just jumps around? Or something else that makes it not DJing?

All the KC players were asked about Taylor Swift yesterday. Lots of people think it’s funny, and I guess it is, but had a real Bothering JLo and Shakira About Kobe vibe at times. Let the fucking players have their moment (even if a lot of them have been there before).

This, though—

Asking Brock Purdy at a main QBs event if he was worried about disappointing Swift was pretty funny, I’ll grant that—of course, but it lets him shine. Overall, NFL seems to have everyone on message that this is all about the Benjamins and there are more to be picked up here even than usual..

Seeing Purdy next to Mahomes gives me even more of a lopsided feeling for this game. Hopefully, we'll have a Mark Rypien vs. Jim Kelly or a Doug Williams vs. John Elway type outcome (not that Purdy is not a legitimate starter vs. a fill-in).

Yes, and for good reason! If something goes wrong, any sort of lights/cryo/whatever wouldn't be in sync with the music.

It's different for normal in-stadium DJs, who are actually playing songs between commercials or pitching changes, etc. But for the Super Bowl? And Tiesto, who's never once DJ'd a football game? Yeah, it'll all be scripted on some level. Too big of a stage to rely on anything else.

Purdy had the highest average per pass in NFL history this year and Purdy has the highest overall QB rating for his first two seasons in the history of the NFL, too.

Purdy isn't a system QB. He's putting up numbers. Will the moment be too big for him? It's possible. The Chiefs' biggest advantage is that their QB has played in the SB 3 times already. He won't get too amped up early and run out of gas in the 2nd half. And that is the Brady and it's a huge advantage.

But I think the Niners win this one. Everyone now is just saying, "You can't pick against Mahomes, you just can't," after picking against him 2 straight weeks. I'm zagging.

Dave Dameshek used to have a bit when he worked for Jimmy Kimmel Live where he would ask all of the players "Is this a must win game?". I think most of the questions during these Super Bowl press conferences are so stupid or out there that the players don't really mind it

As far as system QB, does any team have the offensive skill set players around him like Purdy does? So, what would his passing numbers be on an average offense team? One thing I’ve noticed in recent games is that Purdy seems to have a lot more confidence in his ability to scramble effectively. So, if there is nothing there, he’s saying fuck it, takes off and makes really good gains. In any case, I hope you’re right and the 49ers take a first quarter lead and never look back.

Apex Marketing Group figures Swift has been worth $300 million to the nfl.
Yeah, you don't have to look deep into that "estimate" to realize it's bullshit.

Swift has generated an equivalent brand value of $331.5 million for the Kansas City Chiefs and the NFL, Apex Marketing Group tells Front Office Sports. That number, calculated Jan. 22, comes from print, digital, radio, TV, highlights, and social media mentioning Swift going back to her first game on Sept. 24, then figuring out the equivalent dollar value for each instance based on reach and impact. Online news and digital content has created the most value, followed by social media
In other words, anytime someone clicked a digital story about swift or mentioned her on social media after September 24th, they gave an "equivalent dollar figure" for how much social reach it has.

Not looking at additional gate revenue or increased viewership...just, "If it says Swift - regardless of the content - it increases the brand value!"

I dont care about Swift one way or the other, but do people really need to find new ways to kiss her ass? If Kelce cheats on her, will the Chiefs cut him for fear of tanking their brand value?

Just dumb.

I just played this game on whatifsports.com.

Final: SF 33, KC 27 in overtime

Christian McCaffrey was the star, with 18 rushes for 148 yards and a touchdown, and adding 2 receptions for 22 yards.

San Fran had a 14-10 lead at the half, but KC scored two touchdowns in the 3rd and 4th quarters to take a 24-14 lead with 14 minutes left in the game. SF then scored on 3 straight possessions - 2 field goals and a 45-yard McCaffrey TD run - to take a 27-24 lead. But Harrison Butker kicked a 41-yard FG as time expired to send the game into overtime, tied at 27. The teams exchanged a series of punts before Jordan Mason took a handoff 57 yards for a game-winning TD.

Stats
Passing:
Purdy: 17-32, 160 yds, 0 td, 1 int
Mahomes: 22-32, 257 yds, 2 td, 1 int

Reported on CNBC: $7million for a 30 second ad. Last number I recall was $1 million.
According to this article and others, it is the same cost as last year.

How much does a 30-second Super Bowl commercial cost in 2023?
In 2023, a 30-second Super Bowl commercial costs a record-high average of $7 million, according to Forbes.

In 2022, a 30-second commercial slot during the Super Bowl was $6.5 million, which was an increase from the $5.5 million asked for in 2021.

Here were the prices in some recent previous years:

  • 2020: $5.6 million
  • 2019: $5.3 million
  • 2018: $5.2 million
  • 2017: $5 million
  • 2016: $4.5 million
  • 2015: $4.25 million

(ONCE AGAIN I CAN ACTUALLY CHIME IN WITH EXPERT OPINION ON SOMETHING FOR.... TWICE.)

Kaskade is a pretty fantastic DJ and producer. He's also Mormon! And he DJs barefoot regularly if the conditions allow for it!

Anyway, he's one of the twenty most successful DJs in the world and he's a Vegas staple at this point. Personally I prefer Kaskade to Tiesto, but that's no slight on Tiesto.

But yeah, he won't actually be DJing.

Not going to the game, but I'm headed to Vegas to meet old friends and take in the spectacle, landing in an hour. O/U on the wait at the airport cab line is 45 minutes.
I have the over. I was there in December - and no Super Bowl then of course - and the ride share area probably had a 50 minute wait.

That said, maybe you get lucky. Its Vegas after all.

Random trivia - Some NFL reporter (sorry didn't get their name) mentioned that no Alabama player has scored in Superbowl. If correct, that's crazy to me, especially given their dominance over the past two decades.

Edit: @CaptainLaddie is right. Kaskade is pretty talented. He won't be performing it like normal of course but I will check out his set

Thanks for the tip man. Surge pricing might be rough but I'll take the hit.
Bad news, it's always surge pricing Vegas, especially on a weekend.

Hey, want a food tip?

One of the best places in Vegas to eat is off-strip -- it's called Izakaya Go, and when I go to Vegas, it's literally the first stop -- even before the hotel or casino. My business partner lives in LV and it's *always* the place to go first. Huge menu, sushi, ramen, etc. They have a late-night happy hour where shit gets real cheap, and the food is spectacular. I've been there... I dunno, 30 times, and I've never had an average meal. It's always extremely good. And because it's off-strip, the wait is less.

Other spots to consider: Other Mama (WAY off strip), Krung Thai, Honey Salt, Herbs & Rye, Lotus of Siam. Honestly so many places in the China/Asiantown area are awesome and just drop in. But Krung Thai, Other Mama, and Izakaya Go are my favorites.

On-strip: Best Friend or Noodles (Park MGM), Carbone (ARIA, though it's probably impossible to get in), anywhere at Wynn/Encore, and if you feel like going a LITTLE offstrip to Durango... just have fun. The whole place is lined with great food, though it's a locals casino.
