Spurs 2013-14: Jermain Defoe, The Greatest European Scorer

No, New Jersey.  Usually lurk, don't post.  But it was such a crazy turn of events that I felt compelled.

Spurs 2013-14: Jermain Defoe, The Greatest European Scorer

Townsend I think, but I'm not positive.  Trying to watch at work while avoiding bosses seeing.   Edit: It was Vertonghen according to foxsoccer.  Original foul was on Townsend.  Italian announcing not helping.

Spurs 2013-14: Jermain Defoe, The Greatest European Scorer

This game against Dnipro is insanity.  Down 2-0 aggregate (and an away goal), they get one back, then have a player flop and pretend to be headbutted, and the ref gives the Dnipro player a straight red.  Spurs score like a minute later to make it 2-2 aggregate.  Still need another to advance...

I'd like to draw your attention to Masahiro Tanaka

There's one clarification I was hoping someone could provide. Under the new system, the posting fee is "capped" at $20 mil.  Because of the interest in Tanaka, clearly teams will just offer the maximum posting fee.  However, what happens with more marginal players that get posted who might...

    International Football (non-USMNT)

That would probably be the biggest issue - There would be so few chances over the previous 4 years to play meaningful games as a national team.  The more I think about it, just keep it 32 and tweak the number of teams from each region every 4 years based on prior results, etc.

    International Football (non-USMNT)

Here's an idea that I clearly haven't thought out fully and might not make any sense, but what if you expanded to 36 teams?    In qualifying, you take out all of those 1/2 qualifying spots (with the playoffs).  Work out the total qualifying spots so it comes to 36.  So give Oceania a full spot...

    International Football (non-USMNT)

Good point.  They're not what you would really consider traditional powers, though.    I wonder if Johansson is wishing he had stuck with Iceland, since they actually have a chance to qualify.

    International Football (non-USMNT)

I'd have to think those are two of the more difficult draws for Portugal and France, other than facing each other.  Glad to see one of either Iceland or Croatia is going to qualify, and would love to also see Romania and/or Ukraine.  New blood is good for the sport.

    International Football (non-USMNT)

I can't understand why the format for rankings shouldn't be more of an average, rather than just a total points system.  I think that's what screwed France (although, who cares?), because their group had fewer teams and they had fewer games in which to accumulate points.  I don't claim to...

    International Football (non-USMNT)

Does anyone know if a team has ever won the WC without being a "1" seed?

    International Football (non-USMNT)

Ghana doesn't want to play in Cairo.    Now, I understand the issues with security in Egypt.  But if I were FIFA, I'd say to Ghana, "Fine, as long as you agree to play your own home game at a neutral site."  Considering how much of an advantage home-field is, it would be a disgrace to take...

    International Football (non-USMNT)

That's probably the best answer.   And I agree with Mr. Wednesday that the clause is broader and includes his scenarios.

    International Football (non-USMNT)

I just read that about five times before I think I figured it out. I believe that applies to the following type of scenario:   Player A on Team X gets suspended for one game.  Player A plays in the next game for that team.    Team Y protests that game, because Player A was ineligible.  Even...

    International Football (non-USMNT)

As best I can tell, this is the rule from FIFA (it's from the 2011 version of the rules, but I doubt it changed):   Rule 18   4.  An expulsion automatically incurs suspension from the subsequent match, even if imposed in a match that is later abandoned, annulled and/or forfeited. The...

FIFA hit with new bribery scandal

You couldn't even write this story if you tried. The acting CONCACAF President who tried to fire the Whistleblower whose actions led to the banning of the prior CONCACAF President gets himself fired by the Executive Committee. And now Sepp Blatter wants Placido Freaking Domingo to sit on a...

FIFA hit with new bribery scandal

This might be my favorite part of one of the myriad articles on the FIFA corruption: So 5 admitted that an offer was made, and 13, along with the guy alleged to have made the offer, denied that an offer was made. I wonder which side is telling the truth. And now, CONCACAF apparently wants...
