Red Sox Agree to Terms with Justin Masterson

Relatively low money and a one-year deal for a guy who's been very good recently (just not 2014)? Yes, please.    Even if he's average, they win. And nothing in Masterson's deal protects him from bullpen, trade, or DFA if he can't recover his form.   I like this a lot.

Should the Red Sox trade Clay Buchholz?

Zero benefit to trading him. No one's going to give up anything of value for him, and he's got the rest of the year plus ST to sort out his massive suitcase full of mutually compounding problems. Shame there isn't a Tommy John-style brain surgery. Just go on and graft Mirabelli's self-regard on...

    Thank you Jon Lester

I was a Lester fan all along, but the last few years have seen my two lefty kids learning to pitch in Little League.  I can't count the number of times I've said, "Okay, now watch how Lester does X ..."   It's a business, sure. Return was fair, yep. But this one's tougher than usual on a...

    What makes a great pitch?

I guess I'd argue that there are two classes of "great" pitch. One is unpredictable either in selection or movement (or both). The Pedro change is the gold standard here. Not only was it indistinguishable from the FB during delivery, not only was the motion filthy in its own right, but his...

    Fangraphs on Pierzynski

Awesome. The wit is both keenly honed and coated with the venom of obscure vipers.

12yo narcissism is a powerful thing.

That was my nascent plan. If you're doing it, too, then I like my chances.

EdX offering 6 week on-line Intro to Sabremetrics Course (Free)

He's the kind who's never met a math concept that he didn't assimilate more or less instantly. Handling multivariate alegbraic stuff pretty easily right now. Hasn't really done any trig or calculus, however. He's intrigued by baseball stats in a "calculate his LL team's averages, OBPs, etc. in...

EdX offering 6 week on-line Intro to Sabremetrics Course (Free)

Definitely going to do this.   I have a question for folks who've had a similar intro course, though: how crunchy and challenging is the math? My 12yo is a baseball-loving math whiz. I think he'll dig this, but I don't want to kill his interest by throwing him so far into the deep end that he sinks.

    Schilling Diagnosed with Cancer

Not much to add. Just watched my mom beat breast cancer for the second time. Nearly lost her when I was 10, but she beat it then and beat it now. All that to say that I'm sure your kids are scared in ways they don't know how to show.   Keep telling 'em and showing 'em: Life will be different...

    Choo to Rangers

But Choo's still trading a situation where half his salary will be taxed at NYC levels for one where half his salary will be taxed at DFW levels. That's taxes on c. $9M annually -- not exactly chump change. Given the relative tax rates, my back-of-the-envelope math says he'll save over 500k a...

The Seattle Mariners: The Rudderless Ship?

I have a good friend who grew up in western WA and spent years co-owning M's season tickets. He gave them up two years ago, not because the team on the field was bad but because he felt the FO was so screwed up that there was no possibility of getting a good product on the field without major...

Mike Napoli Back in the Fold - 2/32

I'm late to the party (what with folks already having post-coital smokes), but holy hells I love this deal.    As others have said, I would have been okay with three years -- nervous, but okay. If the hip holds up, we get a couple years of what we just got: grinding at bats, frustrating Ks...

    Joe Posnanski: Lord of Lists

Just read the article and came here to bump this thread if no one had. Should have known I'd be late to the party. Joe Pos keeps amazing me; he's not just my favorite sports writers -- he's one of my favorite living journalists in any media. It's a tough case, but I think I have to take Mo...
