It wasn't just the voice.. it was the combo of: being a homer to an extent that would make even Tommy Heinsohn blush, all of his catch phrases (fiddlin and diddlin), and the all out passion he had for the game ("OH, THE YELLOW, GUTLESS WAY THEY DO THINGS HERE!").
And the man could describe a basketball game... I fell asleep many nights to the Celtics and Johnny. Actually went to a charity softball game in Needham where I think he was MC for the night.. I still have his autograph from that night... as well as Dom DiMaggio, Jim Nance (NEP), Rick Middleton, Dave Cowens, Rick Miller and various other sports celebrities.
Most had this amazing verbal tick -- when the celts did something amazing he would go into this incomprehensible 3 second screech voice... and back to normal 1 second later.

And what better acronyms that McFilthy and McNasty (Ruland and Mahorn, early 80s Bullets_

I could listen to Mike Gorman stories forever. Such a bummer we're not going to have him, Tommy, or Remy soon. We were spoiled.

If Tatum get going in the second half he’s very much still in the MVP picture this year. I’d probably put SGA as the midseason front runner based on a mix of quality of performance and narrative, but there’s no real separation right now at the top and Jokic hasn’t been at his normal level, which opens things up. Giannis and Embiid are obviously serious contenders too and Doncic and Halliburton have cases for consideration but I don’t think their teams are good enough for the narrative piece to work for them.

Its telling that GT folks are getting stressed when a Cs double digit lead dwindles a little. This is not how most NBA fans are experiencing their seasons.

Tatum has a tough road I think because the perception/reality is it’s a team of all-stars which belies the fact of how important he is.

Great stuff. I miss Johnny’s voice.

That was the worst officiated last 4 minutes I’ve seen since… last game.

Wow they are incompetent and getting worse.

His voice is grating and he’s rambling about nonsense that’s loosely related to this game.

Are they trying to give Mike some help? Why is PJ still talking?
"PJ, what would Michael Jordan do with no one defending the rim"

"I called a game in Giannis' rookie year. I thought he'd be pretty good"

Makes one yearn for Mark Jackson, who at least adds some personality to his babbling

First time I’ve ever complained about the announcing during a Celtics game. I have developed so much sympathy and affection for Spree over the course of this game.

I feel like neither wemby nor his teammates have fully grasped what he's capable of and even scratching the surface he's already really good
Some nights he flashes some insane moves or does something you haven't seen before and on others, he looks like a baby deer finding its feet.

So yeah, he's a typical NBA rookie but I totally agree. The Spurs don't really have anything around him - imagine him with a really crafty distributor.
