Here's a question from an antsy New Englander, tired of all the snow.  I played in Orlando last month, but I'm curious about closer to home.  What do you guys think might be the closest course to southern New England that might be open?  How long a drive would it take?

I think the ice and snow storms that affected the east coast will eliminate any answer north of the Carolinas, but i can't be sure.

I got an email last night that one of the clubs I play at, Renditions, is open for play today.

Renditions is in Maryland, east of DC. Probably doesn't help.

Anyone know how the Hirzl gloves fit?  I went to Golfers Warehouse to see one but they don't carry them anymore.
I wear a medium/large in a Taylormade glove and also wear a medium/ large Hirzl glove. The fingers in the Taylormade glove are just a little too long while the Hirzl finger length is just about right. Wrist diameter seems about the same.

I'll echo BwB's experience.  They fit the same for hand size but the fingers are a bit shorter, which for me ends up being perfect.

Edit: They are $20 on rockbottomgolf right now with free shipping if you buy 2 or more.

This winter shit is sucking the life out of this thread.  I'm off to Bandon in just under 2 weeks.  I've got a brand new driver I got to take to Vegas (and murdered the ball) but without the proper shaft.  I've got a Kaili and B-Series ready to take down to the Trackman range here in Denver but it fucking snows every weekend except the weekends I'm in stuck home sick.  I tried to tough it out and play though the sickness but the 40MPH winds just didn't blend with my cold and I only made it through 9.  Played 9 down in Austin yesterday but had to catch a flight.  I hate 9 holes.  It's like the blue-balls of golf.  If you have a great 9 you want to know how you'd do for 18.  If you have a terrible 9 you want a shot at redemption.  In conclusion, fuck winter and fuck 9 hole rounds.

Edit:  This is unreal.  60* today.  60* tomorrow.  Tee time booked for 12:40 tomorrow.  3-6" of snow overnight out of nowhere.  Again.  Fuck winter.

Hopefully more of a blast than FL4WL3SS's wedding, which admittedly isn't difficult to do.

I'm looking to set up a foursome of work people to join an evening league in Boston. I know nothing about doing this, so if anyone has any advice or thoughts, I'm all ears. Anything to choose or look out for over any other?

I played Olde Scotland Links yesterday. Turned out to be great, not too cold and the wind generally stayed down. First time I've played there, I liked it, and in good condition considering the shitty winter. The 16th hole was closed due to snow, but everything else was good.

Went to the range today.  Was worried because yesterday was my shoulder press day at the gym but the soreness wore off after the first few shots and I was hitting the ball well.  Its always tough to judge distances this time of year, particularly with the shit range balls I was hitting, but most of the clubs were going straight.  Driver was the best club of the range session, which I'm trying not to read to much into because its always been the worst club in my bag.  If I could turn around my driver I'd shave 2 or 3 strokes off my game, easy.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I can get to a range after today for quite some time, looking at the extended forecast.

A few weeks ago I scored a pair of Flak Jacket XLJ's with the G30 lens from Oakley.  Its hard to describe but the lens makes scenery look lighter but duller.  I experimented with a cheap pair of tifosi's last year and I honestly wonder how I ever played golf without sunglasses.  Without them, after rounds was a struggle.  I'd have to nap, I'd get headaches. etc...  Now my eyes and head feel great.

First round of the season. 37-35-72 even par. Irons were okay, decent off the tee, short game was best I've had in a while. Usually my contact carries the weight not yesterday. I had 8 one putts, which was more of a compliment to my game around the green than anything.

I've been working on this hip rotation aspect of my game in the offseason. I was thrust my hips and had early extension.

Anyone have any good drills to fight that? Basically its a hip thrust rather than a rotation. Tons of people do it, even lower handicappers. Been working on lower back drills to help it.

Off to Bandon for 4 rounds of golf.  Not much to say, just that Bandon is fucking awesome and I can't wait.  I've been killing the SLDR that Zomp suggested and am looking to put up some low numbers.  Sunny and 60s predicted which is crazy for March on the Oregon coast.  Also the best deal in golf at < $700 for 2 nights, 4 rounds, 2 breakfasts and a really nice dinner.  I can't stress how much every golfer should get to Bandon at least once.

Take your wedge and get in your normal stance, then take your left hand off the club and try to hit the ball with solid contact only swinging with your right arm. This will force you to sync up your body and arms and rotate through. It's impossible to make solid contact otherwise.

I warm up with this every time I hit balls now. It's an excellent drill.

So I went to golftown today with the expectation of just trying on hirzl golf gloves so that I could order them from rockbottom golf, but they were on clearance sale and I snagged the last one in left hand for $12.50.

Also I found that I was a size smaller in hirzl than in titleist or Nike gloves.

I wanted to like the touch feel more but I actually thought the touch control felt better.

Also got two Adidas shirts for $19 each, and yesterday bought 3 pairs of ashworth flat panel shorts for the same price. My wife to be is going to kill me.

Took a couple of fantastic lessons with the guy who owns Stix in North Attleboro. My mechanics overall were ok, but my shoulders were setting up open everytime, and my swing plane had flattened out to where I was almost wrapping around my body.  Also had a reverse weight shift going on by flattening my right leg to try to extend further on the backswing.

I've never had this much fun swinging a golf club.  I'm striking it as consistent as I ever have (entering my 4th year playing).  My goal is to move from a 17 handicap to a 12 by end of summer.  Just picked up some Callaway X-16 Pro Stiff shaft irons from a buddy slightly used.  My swing speed is in the 113 area, so my regular flex shafts weren't cutting it.

You swing 113 with irons?  Are you 8 feet tall?

Lol no no. With my driver.  But regular flex was leaving a little distance on my clubs.  Upgraded the driver too. Thats range speed too, guessing my speed on the course is a notch slower. I am 6'3'' with longish arms I get pretty good whip

113 is well above the cut for X-flex (which is about 105).  Granted there are lots of considerations with torque and how you set the club and all but at 113 you're probably putting a boatload of spin on the ball.  You should find yourself a trackman system and get an hour on it if you can with a club with some interchangeable shafts.  I'd bet an X gets more in line with the 2200-2500 spin you want.

Agreed. Got these clubs at a very reasonable cost. Im still a bogey golfer. Ive made a deal w myself to spend the $ on lessons and getting out and playing until im consistently in the low 80s/high 70s then i will treat myself to a proper club fitting.

That said anyone looking to play early next week? Work schedule is flexible, live in attleboro will go wherever.

Have you considered that getting the right setup may be the thing to get you consistently in the low-80s?  You can get a set of DG S400 for $90 or a set of DG X100 for <$50 on eBay.  If you've never changed your own shafts then it will take you 3 hours to replace every shaft in your iron set.  If you have it will take you 2.  Do yourself the favor and at least get your irons set up correctly.

Anyone here ever try the Zepp Golf sensor or their previous line, the Golfsense swing analyzer?

http://www.zepp.com/golf/

I was hangover on Saturday, watching the NCAA and this thing popped up in a Facebook ad and I totally impulse bought. I wasn't able to find many reviews on the newer product and the pervious model was a bit mixed. I have taken maybe 20-30 swings in the back yard with it and so far I think its cool, but not sure if it is helpful as a learning tool. I love golf gadgets and this seemed like a really good idea, but now that I have the data I have no idea what to do with it. I can see in most of my swings that I am going over the top (which I already pretty much knew, but its a nice confirmation), but not sure how to fix that or what to do with the other data.

I have the Golfsense and I really like it.  I have the app installed on my Ipad which I set under my stand bag at the practice range.  Like you I tend to come over the top and I've been using it to get on plane.  Also, I tend to over swing so it helps me be more aware of that trait and lastly, it really helped with  my tempo.

Do youu just work on getting 3:1 tempo? Or do you use the back swing times? I am typically pretty close to the 3:1, but my back swing registers like 1.3 seconds While the app says .82 seconds for the pro compare

With a 9.5 stiff driver I have a club head speed of 99-100*, ball speed of 146-149, launch angle of 15-16, and spin RPM of 1850-2000. Is that good or do I need to make an adjustment?

Those are all very good numbers. Spin could be a tough higher but overall those are great numbers. Smash factor of 1.45ish is excellent. Launch angle is as well. I bet you hit it pretty far even with a relatively low clubhead speed.

The trackman doesn't actually measure the club head speed, it calculates it off of the ball speed right? The one I used factored in a 1.48 smash.

My launch angle is a little high, but it should even out with my low spin rate?

Anyone tell me what kind of numbers i should be looking for? Looking at phragles thing is like spanish. I know my speed is mid 100s to 113 depending on club from a simulator. What kind of launch angles, rpms etc are considered ideal?

I went to a simulator today and got just disgusting numbers. With ~150 ball speed I was at around a 20* launch angle (up to 23* at times), and had upwards of 5k spin. This was leaving me down around 210 carry.

On the ones I was able to get the launch angle and RPM down to the ranges above (13-14* and 2-3k RPM) I was carrying about 250-260. Problem is, I can't figure out how to keep those numbers down there. Most of my swings were registering out to in, but I was surprised to find that most of my swings ranged from a 3* closed to 3*open, I assumed that I was always leaving the face open. Frustrating game. I haven't been playing much the last couple years because I have gone from Mid-high 80s to struggling to break 100 and its just not fun to play unless I am out with a group of friends and  having some beers.

So I went to Golfsmith yesterday with a buddy to look at some of the new stuff and buy a hat.  While we were there we went in the simulator and hit some of the new clubs.  I have to say, I think my favorite this year is the Nike Covert Pro 2.0.  I absolutely love the head design...if only it wasn't red.  I won't be changing out of my RBZ stage 2 for at least another season but I think they've improved that driver a lot.  Surprisingly, I did not like either of the Big Bertha heads.

Not the best angle, but any tips on the swing from the golfers in here would be much appreciated.  Have a tendency sometimes to push the ball slightly right, i think I'm turning my shoulders before my hands, and the club face is cutting across the ball.  Its not everytime, but more often than I'd like

Yes i tend to flatten out the swing plane sometimes. Although i dont think im too far from the ball here. About a hand distance from belt to club

He's not too bent over, his setup is fine and is actually really good. I'm not joking when I say he's too far from the ball.

Your swing is flat because you're too far from the ball. The butt of your club should be a hands width from your belt buckle (could be a little more with the driver). This will help you get the club up faster and more vertical and it won't be so flat.

You have a good swing. Seriously, step closer to the ball and you'll be surprised at the contact. I don't remember which famous instructor said it, but essentially he said he's never seen an amateur that is too close to the ball. It's possible to get too close, but that is never the case with amateurs.

The first thing you do when setting up is reach for the ball - if you watch your swing, you actually push your hands away even further from the ball on your takeaway. Vertical lift is important in the golf swing.

Also, work on setting up to the ball. You should never align yourself with your left hand on your club like that. I guarantee you are aligned right of your target and are pulling the ball back on line. Setup walking into the ball and put your right foot down first and setp into your stand with your left side.
