Hayes McGinley, 20, was arrested about 11 p.m. March 14 in the 100 block Marshall St., Syracuse, city police Lt. Eric Carr said in a news release. McGinley was accused of punching a 29-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman in the face, the release said. The woman had a bloody lip; the man did not complain of any injury, police said.
Here's what police say happened:
McGinley tried to get into the woman's vehicle, but the 29-year-old man tried to stop him and get him away from the woman's vehicle. McGinley then punched the man in the face. The woman then got into an argument with McGinley. McGinley pushed the woman; the woman punched McGinley in the face and McGinley then punched her in the face. The woman was not charged, Carr said.
McGinley was charged with two counts of second-degree harassment, a violation. He was then sent to the Onondaga County Justice Center because he was intoxicated, Carr said. McGinley was arraigned the following day. McGinley is no longer in jail, records show.
McGinley, a redshirt freshman midfielder from Bentleyville, Ohio, was indefinitely suspended March 15 from the SU men's lacrosse team for a violation of team rules. He had played in games this season.
"Our program and the athletic department have strict rules and expectations for the behavior of our student-athletes," head coach John Desko said in a prepared statement. "He did not meet those expectations."
