Apparently what they actually need is someone who can play a little fucking defense.

Beat Mexico again and everyone gets a pony or bottle of rum, courtesy the Friends of Chuck Blazer.
So I still get my rum? What a game! If we could defend for shit we'd have won. I'll take topping the group though

The other team could say the same thing. But congrats on winning the group. Mexico didn't deserve it.

I'm honestly more pissed at that sorry display by the fans at the very end than at the result of the game. That goal was instant karma if I've ever seen it. Fucking embarrassing.

Edit: Oh man, Miguel Herrera is getting slaughtered on Univision. The media is officially turning on him.

Yep Mexico could definitely say the same. But I'll take it

Mexico's fans really are a disgrace.
Those ones were. I was so pissed. I was in bar filled with Mexican supporters and was quietly supporting my T&T. When that shit happened and we equalized, I shot up and did like 3 Tom Fucking Brady fistpumps in a row and screamed at the top of my lungs. It was epic.

I was pissed too. Those are the fucking idiots that give the rest of us a bad name. Frankly, the goal they gave up on that corner was just about the perfect karma for those dolts. Thanks for ruining it for the rest of us, assholes. On a grander scale, it gives immigration reformists more ammunition for wanting to keep us out. Which pisses me off even more. But that's as V&N as I'm willing to get.

Congrats, Trini. Looking forward to a rematch in Atlanta next Wednesday.

As a ticketholder for Saturday this is a dream scenario. None of Guatemala's bitchmade fifa 15 tactics and no Salvadoran fans to laughably outnumber us. Haiti-Jamaica looks fun too.

Yeah, should be fun. I'll be up in section...uh, 246 I think.

It's disgraceful fan behavior.

In my anecdotal, highly non-empirical experience, the most obnoxious El Tri fans are a certain subset of Mexican-American fans.  It's like they are insecure and feel like they have to go above and beyond to be assholes to prove their Mexican fandom.  I don't know if that's truly a thing, but it's a pet theory of mine.

On the US asshole side, you don't see much bottle throwing, but you do see some ugly racism.

What an entertaining game as a neutralish party.  Was at a bar and got them to turn one of the TVs over from UFC and the ESPYs, and one or two of the UFC fans were even starting to peak over in the second half, made for a decent atmosphere and, KJ9nes must have been so relieved on that final kick.  Very professional of the corner taker to take the bottling give a WTF face, and still whip in a curling ball. That was some good concentration.  There were some rocket shots, Guardado and his screwball quite a display.

Good on the Caribbean nations for the showing the tournament, if you told me they would qualify Cuba, Jamaica, Trini even with 8/12 making the next round I wouldn't have believed it.  Honduras and Guatemala just were not good enough this tournament and Canada is really behind which is sad seeing how much further along their female program is.

I don't think it's just the Mexican-Americans, as you see that at Liga MX games and even international games at Azteca (did someone order the piss bags?). It's a combination of a lot of things, really. Mainly these:

1) There's a saying in Mexico that goes, "El que agandalla no batalla," which loosely translates to, "He who cuts corners doesn't struggle". That provides some insight into the mentality that some will do whatever they want, whenever they want. Anyone who's driven in Mexico has seen this firsthand, as it becomes instantly evident that traffic laws are merely suggestions.

2) Mexicans are a fiery people, in general. I, myself, suffer from a quick temper at times. I don't know if it's an inherent thing or if it's learned but, whatever the case may be, I hope my daughter inherits/learns my wife's more laid back attitude.

3) Mob mentality. We all know what that can do.

Throw all of that together and you have the perfect mix for a small group of people to do something stupid. Most of us wouldn't ever stoop to that level but we all get lumped in together, for better or worse. It pisses me off that it makes me look bad by association but it at least motivates me to be the complete opposite of that. Whatever I can do to try to offset that stupidity, I do it.

As for the American fans, yes, I do see a fair bit of racism from them. And there's a fairly pervasive mentality that because one lives in the US, one must root for the USMNT over their home country. That's a very ignorant mentality to the individual's circumstances and speaks to a certain air of superiority which is, if I'm honest, kind of off-putting.

Enough of shitty fans. This is shaping up to be a very fun and wide open tournament. The four representatives in last year's World Cup looked extremely flawed in the group stage (USA least so of the four), so it's really anyone's to take right now. The quarterfinals should be interesting.

Anyone have experience parking at M&T? I was planning on getting there early and using one of the $20 Orioles lots but I don't know if it's different with twice as many fans involved.

Cuba has lost four defectors and squeaked into the QF only through a 1-0 victory over a weak Guatemala team.  No excuses here.

Brooks is suspended (yellow card accumulation), so we get an Alvarado/Gonzalez pairing.  Hopefully our CBs shouldn't matter - presumably Cuba will be parking the bus.

Lovely header ripped by Dempsey after Cuba was dominating the first few minutes.

They're also missing like 5 players to defection. Have to feel bad for them really.

California. Duh.
Zardes with the pass to Johansson, too close to the keeper.  Probably should have pulled it back to Dempsey around the spot.

I think "dynamic" whenever I see him. He's very good at a lot of things. Jozy is pretty good at boxing defenders out and holding up play. That's about it.

Well, this is the first time the USA has looked like a good team in this tournament.

He's a totally different player. Not to defend Altidore, but the roles and skillsets aren't comparable.

Anyone in need of a reminder of what healthy Jozy looks like should seek out that Bosnia game tape.

Which tells you a bit about how bad this Cuban team really is right now.

No doubt, Cuba is ... not good.

But even against poorer competition, they haven't looked like a coherent team. Today, they do. Did the five days between games allow for some practice time and jelling? Sure looks like it.

ETA: As much as I hate to admit it, the USMNT always looks better when Beckerman is on the pitch.

Yeah, Cuba is awful, but it's still good to see the US jump on them early. It beats watching a 0-0 for an hour with 11 opposing defenders behind the ball.

True, they have different skills.

I've seen Jozy play many, many, games for club and country. Bosnia is more an outlier than anything else, he's completely skill deficient. He's a great athlete, and decent at holding up, but he has no skill with his feet, and he has no instinct for positioning himself to get easy goals and no touch.
