Last night was a nice win to get against an oppoent that played tougher than Philly. It was clear from the game that the Celtics have a lot more work to do, but wins are wins. The Celtics had 19 turnovers and 23 fouls, including having Brown and White in foul trouble late. The ball wasn't moving as we are used to, with only 17 assists in 41 made baskets. At times, this was reminiscent of the way the Celtics struggled (when they did) in the playoffs last year. The Celtics also had no answer for Bam Adebayo, who was a +20 in 35 minutes. By contrast, Duane Dedmon was a -18 in just 9 minutes, and some dude named Haywood Highsmith was a -9 in 4 minutes where the Heat tried to go small without Bam or Dedmon.

In terms of game flow, the Celtics took advantage of 2 early fouls on Bam to build up an 8 point first quarter lead, holding the Heat to 22 points. The second quarter was a back and forth even quarter, 29-29, so Boston took their 8 point lead into the half. In the second half, Miami made things interesting with a couple of big runs, but each time the Celtics were able to settle things down and counter with runs of their own.

This was another game where the Jays led the way offensively, though it was harded for them this time than against Philly. Tatum had 29 points, 5 rebounds, and team leading 4 assists, along with 2 blocks and a steal. Shot only 8-15 from 2 and 2-7 from 3, but added 7-7 from the line. Brown shot better (28 points on 12-18) but had to come out of the game in the 4th due to picking up off-ball offensive fouls as his 4th and 5th foulsand the Celtics iced the game with him on the sidelines.

Al played 34 minutes in this one, which I don't think was the plan with a game against the bigger Orlando team today. The plan was for him to play both ends of the back to back, but I wonder if they dial down his minutes tomorrow - maybe we do see Kornet debut tomorrow. Al's numbers were not great other than 3-5 from three.

Noah Vonleh played all the C minutes while Al was out and looked better than he did against Philly. He had 4 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks in 15 minutes and was a +10. He had 3 offensive boards, one of which led to a putback, another to a spin-move to beat a defender and dunk. I didn't know he had that in him. He didn't far well when matched up against Bam, but, then, neither did Horford.

Derrick White was Mr. First Quarter. It felt like he was everywhere. Strong perimeter defense, but also interior defense. Perfect shooting, which included a pair of catch-and-shoot threes but also getting to the line and hitting his free throws. Rebounding. Ended the first quarter with team leading 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks. He was considerably less effective in the rest of the game and had some foul trouble.

Marcus Smart was the erratic version of himself. He shot 4-9 from the field, 0-4 from three, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and... 5 tunrovovers to lead the team. He had stretches where he played very well and stretches where he was awful. He was effective in this one when he was able to drive. One of the emphases with Tatum and Brown this year is having them cut more, and there was a good example of hiow that can play out with Smart and Tatum. On one play, Smart drives with Tatum in the corner. Tatum's man helps off of him (why?), and as soon as his back is turned to Tatum, Tatum cuts to the basket. Smart finds him all alone under the hoop for an uncontested dunk. A couple of trips later, the Celtcs run the same action. Tatum's man looks at Smart but stays home and Smart drives to the basket and hits a nice, high off the glass layup. On a worse note, late in the game when the Celtics were trying to stave off the last Miami run, Marcus took (and bricked) a stupid early-clock three on one trip down the floor. It dsidn't end up mattering but had they lost it would have been a pivotal play.

Brogdon shot poorly (2 for 9) and his numbers as a whole were not good but he still made plays in spots. He had 3 offensive rebounds in this game, and all were basically the same: he drove, he took a shot, it missed, he rebounded his own miss. All in the third quarter, all in the stretch where the Celtics had settled down after the Miami run and were playing better. Only 3 assists, but a couple of them highlighted the vision he brings. The downside of his game was 3 turnovers, 2 that happened quickly when he first came in. Part of why he is here is to not do that.

Grant was the best bench player today. In 25 minutes he had 10 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and was a +15. He hit a couple of crucial shots late in the game to end the last Miami run. Shot 2 for 4 from 3 and 2 for 2 from 2. Continues to look comfortable driving closeouts.

Hauser got 13 minutes and showed well in this one. Shot 2-3 from three and added an assist. Maybe more importantly, in the tnird quarter Miami decided to try to hunt him, and he was able to hold his own. That's all he needs to be able to do for the Celtics to be able to keep him, and his shot, in the game.

I was going to give some reactions, but Eddie really stole my thunder this morning. Early bird gets the word, I guess. Great post!

The one thing I'd add is that for stretches, particularly with their starters in, Miami was able to muck it up on defense and out play the C's by a narrow margin. That, plus a pretty nice home whistle, kept the game close. The Heat just don't have the offensive firepower or bench to out play the C's consistently. When Miami is clicking though, they force the C's into the type of play that made us crazy during the playoffs last year (lots of iso, poor ball movement, turnovers). The C's gave it the Floyd Mayweather treatment and just outlasted them, but if they're going to win #18 they have to figure out how to punch back better.

Kyle Lowry continues to make my blood boil. He's such a pest of a player. The Celtics must have pissed in his cereal at some point because he always comes with his best. I know I'd love him if he played in Boston, but if that were to occur, I think I'd just be happy about the C's not having to face him anymore.

Tatum’s drive to the hoop and floater with about 3 or 3 and a half minutes left was a nice sign of the right kind of aggression.

When you are good enough, a double team doesn’t have to mean you pass the ball—if you attack AWAY from the double quickly you can create advantageous positions just as easily as if you passed the ball and moved.

That’s exactly what Tatum did there, a well-controlled spin move away from the aggressive double and he made it to the rim with limited resistance because no help came from the other side (if it did, that’s likely where you’d then see the pass).

He and JB are both now at the point where it feels like a mistake to double too aggressively. It’s also up to the teammates to keep their spacing and be ready to move the ball/their bodies at the right moments. Brogdon is key here because he’s one more multi-level scorer than they’ve had. If the shots aren’t falling he has more ways to get it in the bucket for himself or teammates.

Yeah, I think that line is just being uncritically repeated too much about him being a bad defender. I watched the first half of last night's game, and he looked competent enough. No one blew past him. The Heat weren't trying to isolate him, that I could tell. He was a bit slow fighting through screens, but guys like Bam tend to set illegal screens anyway.

Vonleh was another revelation. I think the first two minutes he played this year, he looked kind of lost, but since then, he's been plugged in, and he hustles, and he showed us a nice spin move at the basket last night. He does tend to foul a bit recklessly.

If I were the Celts, I wouldn't bring Time Lord back until February or March. Take the Golden State approach with Wiseman. Nice and slow. This looks like a team that should easily make the playoffs even without Rob.
He's playing the hustle big back-up role really well. Contesting with some effectiveness at the rim, rotating well. He's never been a big guy for blocks but he's gotten quite a few early here, and he seems like he's pretty good at generating deflections. He was frustrated with some foul calls, which I think was fair, some of them seemed ticky-tacky, and he's never been as much of a foul machine as Theis has (Theis 4.9 per 36 in his career, Vonleh 3.9).

Agreed on Hauser. Moving his feet well enough, long enough to contest, and the shot is very real. Adebayo had to make a choice on the second threepointer between defending Al on the wing and Hauser in the corner, and he... chose very wrong.

I'll add to all the Tatum praise (the floaters, the double-team splitting, etc.): he only had to turnovers last night despite the fact that the Heat were playing as hard as you can in the second game of the season. Major fucking props.

Philly got handled. Miami got handled. They don’t get their chance to handle the Bucks until Christmas, but so far, all it has taken is workmenlike effort to handle two perceived EC challengers. Once the Celtics start truly clicking at both ends, look out.

The Heat game would have been more of a cakewalk if they could have avoided playing into Kyle Lowry’s flop-fest. When defending him, you have to stay vertical and on your feet. When being defended in the post by him, you can not push back when he grabs and pushes you. Miami’s zone slowed the Celtics offense a bit. The Celtics have enough veteran players, and enough three-point shooting, where they should be able to take all the teams out of a zone defense in three or four possessions.

I’m looking forward to see how the Celtics handle a young, athletic, big team like the Orlando Magic tonight on her back to back. It will be quite a contrast to their first two opponents. Hopefully Boston jumps on them early.

I'm kind of expecting a loss tonight because Orlando looks to have more talent than the 0-2 record would suggest and they are catching the Celtics on game 2 of a B2B where Al had to go 35 minutes. Also, the Celtics don't have their defense up to speed yet and Orlando presents a different type of challenge than Philly and Miami. But we shall see, if the Celtics win by 40 that would not surprise me either.

The bolded is what stood out to me too. The Celtics 1-7 is just plain better than the Philly and Miami rosters, and 8-10 are totally playable as well.

The Celtics still have some figuring out to do, but the talent level is really high. At some point, people need to re-index to TL's absence not being that big a deal, as good as he is, because the Celtics are so deep with quality talent.

Vonleh has been a pleasant surprise. He seems useful on offense and on the boards, but a defensive liability.

Not too much to complain about through two games. I’m interested to see how Mazzulla handles a close game. It worked out for him last night, but I was screaming for a timeout during that 4th quarter run of Miami’s.

ORL is on a B2B too and they are traveling from farther away (ATL).
I was absolutely going to this game when the schedule came out. Then I saw it was two teams coming off B2B’s. Maybe in January then when it’s reversed (ORL then MIA).

I mean, Orlando played last night, too. No one on the C's played more than 34 minutes except Tatum. They should win.

Over the last two seasons, the Celtics have played 29 playoff games. PP has never had a DNP over that span. Playing sizeable minutes in the ECF last year.

Illustrates this team's depth.

Brad Stevens
1. made a big mid-season trade for White on Feb. 10th
2. maestro'd the best off-season NBA move by landing Brogdon
3. drafted JD
4. signed 3t sniper Hauser for 3yrs
5. has Begarin cooking in Euroland

Every one of those events has happened since Feb. All make PP just a little less necessary this year and in future seasons. +White/Smart/Brogdon all signed beyond this year

I love me some Payton Pritchard, but wouldn't be shocked if PP + Gallo are dangled after Dec.15th.
He'd also probably flourish on a tanker with big-scoring nights

So I was not making a prediction.

And it wasn’t just about the back to back, but about several things

1. The Celtics are a young/prime age team, in theory better able to deal with back to backs, at most positions. But the exception to that is at center.

2. Center is also the position where the Celtics are most short handed. After Horford, the oldest player on the team, they don’t have waiver wire fodder.

3. The Celtics defense, as a unit, is not fully locked in yet. A lot of room for improvement from how they played in both Philly and Miami games.

4. Orlando is young but they have some legit talent on that team, most notably Banchero, and they are loaded with length, while the Celtics have some issues at C.

5. Orlando is a different sort of team than either of the Celtics first two opponents, who were quite different from each other.

All the factors are there for an upset. I’d certainly bet Orlando to cover. At the same time, I wouldn’t be surprised if they Celtics hands them their heads.

Of this was mid season and/or the Celtics were healthy and/or their D looked locked in already, I’d give the Celtics near certain chance of winning.

Did you mean "defensive liability"? I haven't looked that closely but Vonleh seems to be north of cromulent on the defensive side, particularly since they don't appear to be asking him to switch much.

These guys look better than they did last year and this is without RWIII. Brogdon is a perfect fit for this offense. I am so excited for this year.
"Last year" meaning first two games of the season or "last year" meaning when they were rolling?

They didn't give up 40 to someone like Fournier so that's definitely a step up from the first two games of last season but I don't think they are anywhere near where they were in March of last year. And I'm glad they are not.

Last year, the opening few games of the season were so ugly that I thought it cast something of a pall over the first several weeks. Obviously, they came into the year with great expectations both the season and last. But I do think, especially given all the stuff with Ime and Gallinari getting hurt, there’s some value in starting a little hot.

I’m as guilty as anyone, but we should remember things like this when we get frustrated at him for an ill-advised 3. We are watching the best defensive guard in 20 years in his prime.

Its really any shot tbh. The game thread last night was dragging Smart for taking the kind of wide open shots (a perfectly clean three that resulted from an action and not a bailout shot) that NBA coaches routinely pull players for passing up.

Totally agree. Smart shoots between 35-40 percent in wide open threes the last 4 years. He needs to take them. Sometimes the shot early in the shot clock is the best look you will get. It is like complaining when someone swings at the first pitch when it is right down the middle.

I get it given his shooting overall doesn't wow anyone and Smart, like all other NBA rotation players, tries to do too much when feeling himself. But the criticism is either a function of a somewhat irrational fear of Smart's offense or a failure to grasp how the game is played.

I think the majority of fans here are fairly savvy so the trauma of having to watch him shoot, like at all, seems to be what is triggering.

Smart has made more clutch shots than most players on this roster. I wasn't wild about the fact that he shot (and missed) that 3-pointer so early in the shot clock, but it was a good look.

Orlando would be a good team to play Kabengele against, if GW and Vonleh get in foul trouble. They would also be a good team for him to play against if the Celtics open up a 30 point lead.

Watching this Sixers-Spurs game is giving me a greater appreciation for how the Celtics doubled Embiid. It's apparently not quite as easily executed as I would have previously believed if the Spurs are any indication.

I didn't want to start a "Fire Joe Mazzula" thread tonight, but here we are tied up at half versus the Magic. Joe has failed you, me, the City of Boston, anyone who was in the Greater Boston area before the city was founded, Bill Russell, Luke Kornet's extended family, and countless others. I'm afraid I'll have to spend the rest of the evening watching disconsolate Yankees fans and their powerhouse squad of mustachioed gentlemen get thundercocked out of the playoffs again lest I have my weekend ruined by Joe Mazzula.

Edit- (Sorry, I've had two double IPAs and I meant this for the game thread but I'll let it stand for now.)

Well, I thought they might lose because I thought they might show up flat and without their starting center against an Orlando team hungry for its first win. It all pretty much played out like that except that they were able to finally buckle down and hang on to a small lead at the end.

With Horford out, we saw musical centers in the first half. First Vonleh, then Blake, then Kornet, then Grant. Mazzulla must have liked Grant best of all of these, because Grant got the most time at the position in the second half. (Vonleh started but did not play much, Kornet did not play at all, Blake played late in the third and early in the 4th, otherwise it was all Grant.)

Aside: Bol Bol looked damned good in 13 minutes off the bench for Orlando. Six points on 3-7 shooting, 5 rebounds, 4 blocks. Orlando signed him for 3 years, $2.2 million per year. I wonder if we made a mistake there just shuffling him off.

Anyway, this was a game where, for most of it, Orlando just played harder and better. At times they stymied the Celtics with zone, at times they killed them on the offensive glass. They gave up 68 points in the first half before holding Orlando to only 52 in the second.

It didn't help that Brown had as little touch around the rim as I have ever seen him have before, scoring only 12 points on 4-16 shooting. Marcus also shot terribly, 2 for 11 including an incredible 1-9 from three. He should never be jacking up 9 threes in a game, never.

The centers, aside from Grant, were generally mediocre, though Blake did make a couple of hustle plays and he did win a jump ball against a 6'6" guy.

Tatum led the way with 40 points but this was really the Derrick White game. Tatum shot 14-21 from the field, including 10-11 from 2 and 4-10 from three as well as 8-9 from the line. He was having a lot of success in transition and on drives against the Magic Efense (no D). He got to 30 fairly early in the third, but at that point the Magic tightened up a little and he had a long scoring drought before dropping in 10 late in the 4th, some on late free throws when the Magic were fouling. The Celtics also used him effectively to break the Magic one in the 4th. Going to him in the middle on 2 straight trips, getting 2 baskets out of it, and they went back to man.

Derrick White scored 27 on 10-17 shooting, including 5-9 from three, and he added 4 assists and a steal. With the Celtics up 3 and just over 3 minutes left, Mazzulla calls the "use it or lose it" time out to get White back in the game. On the next play, Tatum tries to drive, is cut off, pulls it back out and gives it to White up top. White sees a lane and makes a decisive drive for a dunk, getting to the basket just ahead of the defender. Celtic lead is 5, and on the ensuing Orlando possession White takes a charge. Magic lose a challenge, Tatum sticks a 3 and the Celtic lead is 8.

In terms of the bench, Grant was very good in this one. Plyed 31 minutes (18 at C), scored 13 points on perfect shooting 3-3 from 3 and 4-4 from the line. Plus 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks. And a couple of his threes were critical ones. Last year, Grant made a run at 50/40/90 - he fell 0.025% short in FG%. There's good reason to think he gets it this year.

Brogdon had a couple of turnovers but was otherwise OK.

Hauser only played in the first half, but he made his 7 minutes count, scoring 9 points on 3-4 from three and adding 2 rebounds.

Pritchard played 3 minutes in the first half and hit a 3.

If you want the Rick Pitino Negativity crown, it is yours. And while I think that you're seeing things through poop colored glasses here, I commend you on your prose.

He's not Hauser anymore, now he's Quaid.

Yup, Im gonna keep pushing that one.
Keep pushing that. It's cooler than Doogie and likely any names that will arise.

Some may have concern about the defense for the first few games, but I'm still not concerned. Still no TL and tonight no Al. There were a few too many easy ones tonight for Orlando, but I think that there was same damn good ball luck against contested shots as well. And frankly...it seemed like the Celtics core knew that this game wasn't going to be a thing. Nobody likes to see teams take their foot off the gas pedal ever, because it can come back to haunt you and can reveal a lack of urgency in general. But the good teams, they know. They know that despite a really nice young roster, Orlando isn't a good team right now. Even nice performances by honest, real NBA players like Banchero and Wagner, was rather inefficient totals in the end. 23 on 19, 18 on 17. Sure, for a couple of guys their age, it's fucking fantastic, but that's not the point. The good guys knew that they could turn it on when necessary, and only Terrence Ross playing like he won a bet with God and Orlando outrebounding them like they were a freshman team even kept it close. When the time came, Jayson went bonkers, they got a few stops, and bam, it's over.

Key stat of the game for me--24 assists on 42 shots for the Cs. The offense cannot be stopped.

Thundercocked is a new one for me. I don’t fully understand what it means but it definitely has potential.
The Astros have been loudly slapping their cocks once if it's a fastball, and twice if it's a curve...

Hence the Yankees have been Thundercocked

Felt like a pretty standard "not gonna try too hard on defense in October against the Magic" game. Celtics are good enough now to pull it out.

Really would have liked to see Hauser against the zone. Mazzulla waited too long to get him in, then didn't want to use a timeout, then Jaylen kept getting to the FT line so couldn't sub Hauser for him. Need to be more intentional about working Hauser into the rotations at this point imo.

Marcus with 8 assists but 9 3pt attempts? Don't love him settling for 3s with so much shooting around him

Blake's energy on the bench is great, made a good hustle play late in the 3rd. We can live with 7-8 mpg of diving on the floor, taking charges, and solid passes/screens from an ex-superstar. Easing him into certain situations with limited minutes is the best way to take advantage of whatever he has left. Still want another BIG for Xmas
