Wilson was pretty good in the preseason. Collins, if he still has something, will help. Others will be better served in slightly different roles.

I think Wilson has been fine, his speed has shown up on the field, he hasn't been great, but he's also helped reduce the number of just awful plays against speed that we had last year.

Seems like they benched him fairly early on yesterday and he only played 10 snaps. It's also odd to me that they didn't play Raekwon on defense at all but did play him on special teams--not sure it they are working him back in from injury or if he's lost his playing time.

Yeah, unless Jones or Hoyer is healed, Zappe and Gilbert are the guys Sunday. And Jakobi Meyers as well I guess.

Any of the 6-8 FA or PS vet QB's I listed upthread. A vet QB won't be deer in the headlights if he gets called into action (when Wynn gets Zappe crushed). A vet QB will know how to pick up a new playbook and be somewhat useful in less than a week.

Fair enough. Those are recognizable names. But substantively they all seem like coin flips alongside "Garrett Gilbert" (except maybe Cam who at least knows the plays that he probably remains unlikely to be able to execute). I do wonder why they chose Gilbert.

Morbid curiosity trivia........I wonder how many NFL victories have been credited to 4th string QBs.

IMO, Gilbert and randomly selected name from those lists of vet QBs might indeed be a coin flip at a QB skills competition, but that’s not what a Sunday afternoon with 60,000+ screaming fans is. So for me, in that case, I’d rather have the vet. As long as that vet isn’t Brian Hoyer.

Offense by game:
- 35 points, 386 yards
- 36 points, 425 yards
- 24 points, 416 yards
- 45 points, 520 yards
AVG: 35.0 points, 436.8 yards

So yeah, the Pats' defense surely will be tested BIG TIME this week.

But then...

Defense by game:
- 38 points, 455 yards
- 27 points, 396 yards
- 28 points, 373 yards
- 48 points, 555 yards
AVG: 35.3 points, 444.8 yards

So maybe the Pats' offense just rolls the Lions' defense.

Could be a bonkers game.

Patriots are bringing back quarterback Garrett Gilbert to their practice squad - The Boston Globe

Gilbert was with New England in 2014 and again briefly in 2021 before he was plucked by Washington to be an emergency starter when its quarterbacks, Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen, were placed on the COVID-19 list.
The well-traveled Gilbert (he’s been with eight NFL teams) signed with the Raiders in March but was released when, coincidentally, Las Vegas traded for Patriots backup Jarrett Stidham.
Gilbert was originally drafted by the Rams in 2014 before being released early that season. He joined the Patriots practice squad in December and was with the team as it won its fifth Super Bowl.
He also has been with the Lions, Panthers, Browns, and Cowboys. In addition to the start he made with Washington, he started a game for Dallas in 2020.
For his career, Gilbert has completed 43 of 75 passes for 477 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception.
Considering he had just four days to prepare, Gilbert did an admirable job running Washington’s offense back in 2021. He completed 20 of 31 passes for 194 yards with no turnovers in a 27-17 loss to the Eagles.

Lions have given up the 3rd most rushing yards at. They are giving up a league worst 5.6 yards per carry.

However, on the offensive side, Detroit is averaging a league best 5.9 ypc.

Patriots have struggled against the run as well so this game could be a ball control, low number of possessions game.

3rd down and red zone efficiency might be key.

I had both Jared Goff and Geno Smith on my fantasy team. We were going up abasing Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen. PM and JA combined for 83 points (Yahoo scoring). My guys outscored them by 39!

Some interesting possibilities coming up soon as guys return from injury:
  • CB: When Mills returns, will we see him or Jon Jones move into the slot role and knock Bryant back to dime duty/special teams only?
  • TE: With Jonnu out, that's only 1 TE on the 53. Do we see Sokol or Washington moved up? Will either one see much run?
  • WR: With Thornton back practicing and Meyers theoretically back soon, what will the WR corps look like? LJH is obviously filling the role that Harry used to have as the blocking WR, which may be even more important with the state of the TE group (see above). Agholor, Parker, Bourne, Meyers, Thornton, LJH -- that's likely at least one too many. Whose doghouse is Bourne in and why?

I'm literally far away from WEEI, so I don't listen to it. But tell me why Bourne has been so limited this year compared to last? Not trying to be controversial or hot-take-y, but his skill-set and route-tree (including carrying the ball) seems like it would be one that this year's team could use.
