Calgary absolutely took Vancouver behind the woodshed - Kuzmenko is having a bit of a sophomore slump but still only has one fewer goal than Lindholm does and Hunter Brzustewicz is the third leading scorer in the OHL as a defenseman.

I agree it seems Calgary won this but perhaps not as one sided...

Kuzmenko makes more $ and is signed next year as well. Lindholm is a rental. That round one pick is going to be a late pick in a weak draft. One could say this gives them Kuzmenko's cap space for next year...which isn't a bad thing.

I think it's fine for Vancouver.

Kuzmenko had 74 points last year but 19 came on the power play and he shot an insane 27.5% for the season which is as high a shooting percentage as I've ever seen and the most obvious of regression candidates. This season is probably more of an indicator of who he really is as a player and he clearly fell out of favor with Tocchet and is probably overpaid at $5.5 million AAV. The prospects are the prospects. "Scores a lot in the OHL" isn't typically a harbinger for future success, even for defensemen. Intriguing but still basically a lottery ticket. Anecdotally, most of the high-end defensive prospects that hit in the NHL come out of the NCAA these days. Fox, McAvoy, Hughes x2, Makar, etc. There aren't a ton of high end D coming out of the OHL. Not saying Brzustewicz is an auto bust but I'm not sure he's really a blue chipper either.

This seems like basically the Horvat trade.

Kuzmenko = Beauvillier
Brzustewicz/Jurmo = Raty
Picks

I guess then you quibble on who the better player is, Horvat or Lindholm. They are different players, Lindholm's more of a 2-way guy, Horvat is more offense.

A comparable deal from the Bruins would maybe have been:

DeBrusk
Lohrei
Frederic Brunet
2025 1st
2024 4th

If I’m Calgary, I might still take the Vancouver package, and that’s a ton to give up unless you are sure that you can resign Lindholm.

The more I look at it, I hope the Bruins don’t do anything at the deadline.

Eh, I think Brzustewicz is being over valued. The only real comp with Lohrei is that they are both defensive prospects. Lohrei is 23 with NHL experience and Brzustewicz is only 19 and 6 months removed from the draft. The value there is a lot different. Brzustewicz is still very much a lottery ticket; Lohrei much more of a known commodity albeit with fewer years of control. Brzustewicz is putting up a ton of points but the better comp value wise factoring age and control is Chris Pelosi who the B's selected about 15 picks after Vancouver drafted Brzustewicz.

Brzustewicz wasn't considered one of Vancouver's top prospects and they don't have a deep pool. The Athletic had him 6th on Vancouver's list which was 24th overall and he didn't crack a top 100 list for Elite Prospects or Daily Faceoff.

Why would they let the team move there instead of granting SLC an expansion team and collecting a $700 million fee that they don’t have to split with the players?
Nothing official but the tea leaves seem to indicate the NHL is going to take control of the franchise (again) and then sell it. The sales price becomes the expansion fee.

Maybe because Houston and Atlanta already called dibs/were promised an expansion team? IDK.

There was some thought that the NHL might be the first league to expand to 36 teams.

Salt Lake City and Atlanta (lol) have been rumored to get teams recently. Houston has popped up for a few years now.

Putting another team in Atlanta may be just what Quebec City needs to get a franchise by 2030. :)
They haven’t wanted to put another team in Canada because of the value of the Canadian dollar, but if they add 3 more US teams, having one more team up in Canada maintains the current percentage of teams collecting Canadian dollars for home dates, so maybe the other owners would go for it?

I was listening to a Darren Dreger interview and he predicted that new expansion fees would be approaching $2 Billion!
That seems really high to me.

But I guess any number below $2B is "approaching $2B"

The Senators were just sold for $950 million so an expansion fee north of a $1 billion seems reasonable. Not sure what the sales price would be for the Coyotes but I'd imagine in the neighorhood of the $950 million the Senators got.

I think the general idea with expansion is they've figured out an expansion system where the new team can be competitive right out of the gate. Vegas has basically been a top 5 team in the league since they started playing. Seattle is in year 3 and have a playoff series win under their belt and are in the playoff race this year.

Maybe if Arizona is such a great market (which it could be with a the right arena in the right location), NHL can move the current franchise, and then once a competent ownership group can have a firm arena plan in place do expansion to Arizona…

While the Coyotes thrive in Utah, of course!

(I think the Coyotes in SLC will be a huge success, but I sort of hope they would re-brand…also wondering who they’d partner with for AHL and ECHL affiliates)

Check your attic. A Regina, SK family found a crate of unopened hockey cards from Gretzky’s rookie year.

The bidding on a box of unopened hockey cards recently discovered by a Regina family has topped $2 million.
Rich Mueller of the Indiana-based website Sports Collectors Daily said the family's discoveries are similar to holding a winning lottery ticket.
Last month, they unearthed a crate of 1979 O-Pee-Chee brand hockey cards. The company selling the box, Heritage Auctions, estimates there could be more than two dozen Wayne Gretzky rookie cards inside.
In mint condition, Gretzky rookie cards can sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars each.

Hey kids, don't post video of your cocaine usage:
https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/02/23/sports/adam-ruzicka-coyotes-cocaine/

The Arizona Coyotes have put forward Adam Ruzicka on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract.

The move comes after Ruzicka posted to social media a video of a himself with a white powder appearing to be cocaine and a credit card on a counter. The team announced Friday that Ruzicka was going on waivers for termination purposes and said it would have no further comment at this time.

How does the ref in the first clip who is standing right there not call that?
It’s just one angle but his skates appear to be parallel to one another and the boards, and it looks like his upper body twists and is what causes the hit to look like a boarding. Like I said it’s just one angle but I don’t see how it’s a clear penalty (based on my belief that his back wasn’t turned to the player).

Boarding – A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player who checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently or dangerously. The severity of the penalty, based upon the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee. There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the application of this rule by the Referees. The onus is on the player applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, he must avoid or minimize contact. However, in determining whether such contact could have been avoided, the circumstances of the check, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the check or whether the check was unavoidable can be considered. This balance must be considered by the Referees when applying this rule. Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-side” play which results in that player hitting or impacting the boards is “boarding” and must be penalized as such. In other instances where there is no contact with the boards, it should be treated as “charging.”
As written there actually is no need for the player to have his back to you. He just has to be in a vulnerable/defenseless position. This seems to meet that criteria.

Looks like Chris Simon passed away at the age of 52. No details yet as far as I could tell but that’s far too young.
