Back to Scottie, Data Golf has a Peak Index that tries to rank players peak using strokes gained and Scottie is up to #2 all time, just passing 2004 Vijay. Scottie right now is basically gaining 2.98 strokes per round in total over the average PGA Tour player. Almost 12 shots in a 72-hole tournament. Haha.

2000 Tiger is #1, almost a whole shot more than Scottie.

Some other stats. Scottie joins Tiger as the only 2 players to ever win at TPC Sawgrass and Augusta in the same season. Those two are also the only players who have won multiple times at both TPC Sawgrass and Augusta (Jack has 3 Players wins but all 3 came at different courses).

In the OWGR, not great anymore due to LIV, Scottie moved to 6.3 average ranking points ahead of Rory at #2. Its about the same gap as Rory to #85. Rory would need Scottie to stop playing golf and to win 3 majors to catch him.

I wish I liked him, but I just can't. I love great golf, so that's fun to watch, but I find myself rooting for anyone but him. The "my place is secure on the cross" stuff is just nauseating. I don't understand why these guys can't keep their religion to themselves, nobody cares.

Apparently not the case.

A lot of people care. Not you, and that’s fine. Why is everyone else free to be their “authentic selves” but not him? I find that bizarre.

Personally I think he handles those questions very graciously. But YMMV.

Professional athletes making a declaration of religious belief makes is usually brought up in an artificial context and delivered in a way that implies that “God favors the faithful*.” It’s both nauseating and tends to trivialize the very concept of belief.

IMO, Scheffler didn’t do that. He gave an answer to a reporter’s question and placed his belief in the right context, in the sense that he reminds himself that as long as he’s secure in his faith, how he performs on the golf course is unimportant.

*I still remember Gary Carter being interviewed right after the 1986 World Series and, without any prompting, turning to the camera and yelling “I’D JUST LIKE TO THANK JESUS CHRIST!!!” (Barf.)

To be fair, Jesus had a massive bet on the Mets that year.
