Kapalua tees off tonight. No longer named the TOC because it's a full signature event so the field is like a 60 player field. Basically everyone is playing except Rory who never does. Also apparently Rahm is actually there? Keeping the reservation for a family trip to Maui?

Qualifying as follows:

For 2024, players qualify for The Sentry by winning a PGA TOUR event in the previous calendar year. The field will also include the top 50 players from the FedExCup playoffs points list who haven't previously won an event during the season.

He won 4x last year, including the Sentry ToC, and led in Fedex points. The Hawaii events have always been a nice vacation for the tour players and their families. I'm not surprised he's showing up. They really did have a nice thing going even if it wasn't the most lucrative setup for the top 10(ish) players. Oh well, money money money.

Well it's a bit interesting to me because he left for LIV, reportedly gave everyone the cold shoulder on the way out, but shows up on Maui for tournament week where he's the defending champ but can't play?

I like tuning in to Hawaii as January weather sets in. Too bad about the not-TOC, though. I always liked the "hey, *that guy* won a tournament last year?!" aspect. And for a lot of only occasional or rare winners, the TOC was sort of their last appearance in the spotlight/easier chance to get some points or $$ before the tour gets more serious.

I've found it weird in the past when guys will play this week and then not next week. You already made the 4+ hour journey to the islands and made the time zone adjustment but you just want to skip out on another potential pay day?

Or you can just have a nice vacation in Maui for a week.

Tiger announces his partnership with Nike has ended.

https://twitter.com/TigerWoods/status/1744388880348991727?s=20

It's going to be weird seeing him without the swoosh.
Definitely. Tiger without the swoosh hat is going to look strange. Maybe off to Greyson and the land of the $200 hoodie?

There was a time when Nike apparel seemed premium compared to competitors. I'm not quite sure if it got worse or others caught up but it doesn't feel like it's anything special vs. the field anymore. A lot of their shirts designs are downright ick lately too. Especially their new logo on the front and back thing.

Tiger not being with Nike is about as unthinkable as Jordan not being with Nike.

It would seem that Tiger couldn't transcend his sport to general fashion the way Jordan has.

There's only so much you can do with golf and a market that historically is a bunch of middle aged to older white guys. The mock turtleneck was a thing.

I imagine the bigger changes will come with the younger guys like Morikawa who prefer to golf in shorts and a tee.

There's a whole building on Nike's campus called the Tiger Woods build. The atrium is filled with nothing but TW memorabilia. His influence there is/was deep.

The mock turtleneck generated a LOT of consternation from the old dudes at my club in the 2000s. That's not a collar! They lost that battle, eventually.

Anyway, an update on Patrick Reed's $750M defamation lawsuit. It's not going well for Reed:

Patrick Reed, whose $750 million lawsuit against Gannett (the Times-Union's parent organization} and other media outlets was dismissed twice, has been ordered to pay attorney fees and costs to the defendants.

Something to spend all that LIV money on, I guess.

I totally agree with your second paragraph. I have (way too much) golf apparel and other than their hats, which happen to fit my weirdly shaped head well, none of it is Nike.

They are putting the Grandstands too close to the greens in a lot of these tournaments. Bradley (in the playoff), An, and Yuan all got very favorable free drops on either 17 or 18 yesterday after hitting it into or against the Grandstands. Murray made the 40 footer in the playoff so it ended up not really making a difference. But they need to move them back, or at the very least create drop areas in the ROUGH so guys don't get rewarded for bad shots with good lies after the drop.

Edit: Corrected the scenario with yesterday's tournament. An possibly misses the playoff without getting a perfect lie after the drop on 17. Bradley's drop in the playoff didn't end up helping him because he hit a very mediocre shot even after getting a nice lie after the drop.

It’s a problem at the Sony more than others because it’s a par 5 with no hazards. The guys can just pull out the lumber and let it run with little consequence. It happens at Torrey too. Water short of the green but guys can just use the grandstand behind the green as a back stop. The closing par 4’s are usually fine because they aren’t missing that badly with irons.

I think they need to make the drop zone more penal but difficult at Wailae because they don’t really have deep rough.

I'm pretty sure it happened in the Tour Championship in 2022 on 18 in the last round. If I recall correctly Rory hit one into or up against the grandstands and got a free drop, and possibly even was able to place the ball after a couple of bogus drops. Not sure about the placement, I may be confusing that with a different drop. But it was definitely a really difficult shot made much easier by the drop, and he ended up getting it on the green and 2 putting for a 1 shot 1win. He easily could have left that shot short of the green if he had a bad lie.

18 at East Lake is a par 5., though I don’t think that grandstand comes into play much (Rory hit a really bad one to get there). It happened a bunch at the Canadian Open last year too, another par 5. It is definitely a thing on Tour. It just happens a lot more at the Sony because it’s a par 5 with no hazards and hospitality hugging all 3 sides of the green so the grandstands become a backstop and it’s literal strategy to hit it there. Most players need wood coming in and the go decision is basically “worst case we hit it into the grandstand and get a free drop”

I agree they need to do something. At the British Open the R&A puts drop zones for grandstand TIO and puts the drop zones in gnarly spots so the players get the benefit of a free drop but not a clean lie. The Tour should probably do the same.

One hole to go with the lead for Dunlap. Just got to find the fairway on 18

Dammit. I was watching at home in between NFL commercials but left when he missed the putt on 16.

That’s awesome though. Does he get any of the exemptions? Invite to Augusta?
