0 points on just 2 FGA in 29 minutes. I don't think that is what the 76ers wanted from his $39M salary. Not sure if he was hurt but he really went out with a whimper. Wonder where he ends up next season.
It sounds so Simmons'y, but what do I get from listening to the Pod every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday night. After the Embiid game, and the Brunson game, and the Maxey game, I kept wondering which game this was going to be. It was the Dante game. then the Batum? game for about half a minute. Oh yeah, it is the Buddy game (eerily JD Drew like), and the Brunson game, the Kelly Oubre game? to the Hart redemption tour game, but it finally settled into the game that had been foretold for years...the absence of Tobias Harris game.

To quote Sugar Hill Gang, "I've got a color tv, so I can see, the Knicks play basketball.

Finally, World B. Free was styling.

Crazy postseason. That Milwaukee, Philly, GS, LAL are all out- while teams like OKC, Indy, Minny, NYK, Cleveland / Orlando march on feels wild, if not surprising. Whole new era and mix of teams.
Projected all NBA team- https://www.forbes.com/sites/shaneyoung/2024/04/15/selecting-the-2024-all-nba-teams/?sh=23867a5bdd59

6 out of the 15 are out of the playoffs, and a 7th will be after the LAC/Dallas series ends. That's a lot of all stars done before Mother's Day.

And USMNT right-back Sergiño Dest's pregame routine involves eating an entire french baguette. Pro athletes are idiosyncratic weirdos sometimes.
And Lamar Odom would eat candy all day along (him and some other NBA diets here.

There was a also a Red Sox player who had a weird pre-game meal ritual, can't remember who it was though . . . .

Maybe I'm reading too much into it but when I see PHI play (not very frequently), I got the feeling that Harris did not like playing on this team very much. I mean Harris had basically the same USG% in the playoffs as Al Horford, and Harris is supposed to be the third option.

And while I'm looking up stuff, in 6 games, PHI played 43 minutes with Paul Reed on the floor (and presumably Embiid off). Phi scored 63 points. NYK scored 107. I know SSS and all that but it matched the eye test that maybe Nurse should have tried someone else rather than Paul Reed.

Boston, MA
I like the "Jeter Sucks A Rod" energy coupled with the awkward cuckold stuff at the end. Well done, NYC, really bringing back the early 2000s but with a twist.
Everyone was clowning on Philly, but this is a true reminder of what we are dealing with here. Causeway Street had a very "well, that was nice, but much work to do" feel after Game 5, as it should have been.

Kind of surprised that no one here has seen Sidetalk before? It's supposed to be over the top. That's the idea.

Reminds me of the old Simmons contention that there are really only 5-7 competent (or better) GMs in the NBA at any given time.

Dunno how long ago he said that, but I think that number would be higher now. There's so much more money in the sport than there was ~20 years ago that front offices have more money to invest in quality management and analytics. I know an executive who was brought in to the senior staff of a team a couple of decades ago and he left after ~18 months. When I asked why he said the people in management weren't that smart, the pay was mediocre for his role, they didn't have a lot of data/analytics/evidence of anything to work with, and the way they made decisions was stupid: all in all it was a bad place to work if you wanted to put together a career running successful business(es).

Some teams are probably still like that, but a lot have changed.

Gotta judge The Process by 5 years ago, not its shattered remains today. If Simmons wasn't a flake or they made less stupid decisions, they might've actually been a contendah.
Yeah, I'm in this camp. I would hate it if a team I rooted for went this route, but The Process was wildly successful at achieving it's stated goals

The Colangelo/Brand era was then a complete disaster, especially when it came to roster construction...
  • Choosing to keep Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris over Jimmy Butler
  • Signing Al Horford because you thought you could play him next to Embiid
  • Thinking Embiid and Simmons could complement each other on offense when neither could shoot away from the rim
  • Trading for Josh Richardson (whose biggest weakness was outside shooting) because you thought he'd help your spacing
  • Etc.
  • Etc.
These weren't bad luck. Bad luck is more like: injury and age come faster than they might have and now Kemba Walker is more or less done as a net-positive in NBA playoff games. The 76ers did a ton of moves that made little basketball sense at the time.

Without even getting to the ridiculousness on Twitter, the Elton Brand years were a train wreck.

Lawyers have that concept they call the "Theory of the case". I don't know what the 76ers theory of the case was for how you construct an NBA championship team, but in the Venn diagram it was somewhere in the overlapping circles of insane, stupid, and wrong.

Edit: Sorry, I was thinking of the Colangelos and my brain grabbed a different name. Updated

PHI went on a 60-28 run in the middle of this game (from 33-11 down to 71-61 up) and still lost, that is something.

What can they do? Sign or acquire the best player they can with cap space; re-sign Maxey to a max extension; fill out the roster; and hope for the best.
Yeah I don’t get the sink be sinkin here. Embiid, Maxey and cap space plus find better role players who fit…..more than half the league would swap for this spot. Depending who they get with the space and Embiid being in one piece they are going to be in that tier behind Boston next year.

Embiid finished the season 2-5 vs NY and 31-7 against the rest of the league combined.

Tbf, this is "every player with a good record who loses a series in 4-6 games"
Find me one other example that extreme over an entire season, please.

FWIW his one regular season game against them was a 36 point loss. He played at a 67-15 pace against the rest of the league and a 23-59 pace vs NY. Obviously it is a SSS, that is all we have.

Actually I found an amazing one, Dirk Nowitzki and the #1 seeded Mavs that lost to GS. Nowitzki went 64-12 against the rest of the league that year, 2-6 vs GS. I don't think it happens very often though.

I mean... a 1 game sample is indeed quite small.
Whichever team a limping around Embiid played was going to end up with a great record. If they'd played BOS he probably ends the season 1-5 against them

Just look for any time a team with a big winning percentage loses in a lopsided series. 1994 Magic against Rockets, 2004 Lakers against Pistons, 2012 Thunder....the list goes on.

I have stuff to do so I can't look up all high winning percentage teams that lost badly, but there's definitely a substantial list.

Anyway, fun stat for Knicks fans, enjoy the winning.
