I feel like you’re passing over the most obvious, Dunand Done.

CAMPBELL #213 - Maceo is sad for only reasons that me & @sittingstill know, but it's not too surprising as they are clearing out that '20 UDFA class & he has had trouble throwing strikes.

JIMENEZ #113 - I wasn't doing this when Jimenez was #4, & it was a really fallow time for the system... but yeah, idk. Probably time to move on.

RAMSEY #165 - Breslow doesn't seem too into some of the Bloom later draft picks. Ramsey was a 16th round pick in '22.

JAMES #121 - I feel like I was a bit of an irrational Lyonell stan at times, but an 82 wRC+ last year isn't particularly good. He was 20 & put up a 149 wRC+ in the FCL the year before, so kind of expected him to get another shot.

DUNAND #136 - He was not there very long. The 28 y/o has 11 career MLB PAs.

CRON - Not a prospect.

6.6 K per 9 in Japan as well as rough go this spring makes me wonder if the stuff just won’t translate

Yeah... they must see something that I don't see.

The deal is a split contract that pays Uwasawa $2.5 million if he’s on the big league roster and $225,000 in the minors while including up to $1 million in incentives based on innings pitched. The Red Sox will now assume that deal whether Uwasawa is on their 40-man roster or not.

Will put this in here first before it hits the waiver wire... Red Sox are mutually parting ways with Stephen Scott.

We need like a breaking news siren, thx!

It's too bad, but not overly surprising once Hickey was promoted.

Hickey to Worcester is interesting. His bat is ready to move up, & it's probably about time to give up on him as a catcher, so this probably makes sense, especially with Valdez & Dalbec in Boston. Seems a bit redundant with Scott, but oh well.

Hunter Noll made his Tweet one minute after Andrew's post... then (approx.) 37 people including Andrew, Ed, Hen-ri-kay & Gatlin posted confirming it lol

He was my #52.

It's clear they've been prioritizing defense at the catching position to help develop their pitchers, & with Pérez, Heineman & Kolozsvary, they weren't going to use Scott at catcher.

I also don't think they'll be using Hickey there much at all, which leaves 1B & DH for Niko & Hickey.

The best way for Scott to increase value is to become a competent catcher so maybe there is an org where they will let him try it.

The Red Sox MLB team also isn't really in need of a bat only lefty. Wish him the best of luck.

Does the Kimbrel resemblance also speak to the runners on second and third in both those clips?

That or the 5.2 bb/9 last year...so, yes.

I thought that 10 inning stat was a bit silly but he was actually pretty decent from August 8th on...

22 games, 23 IP, 2.74 ERA, .189 BA, .602 OPS, 1.13 WHIP

The Red Sox got rid of some of the lesser performing DSL guys:

03/29/24 DSL Red Sox Blue released RHP Aaron Liranzo.
03/29/24 DSL Red Sox Blue released RHP Argeny Sanchez.
03/29/24 DSL Red Sox Blue released SS Gabriel Mavarez.
03/29/24 DSL Red Sox Blue released RHP Daury Pena.
03/29/24 DSL Red Sox Blue released OF Jhoan Solarte.
03/29/24 DSL Red Sox Blue released RHP Ruben De La Cruz.

03/29/24 DSL Red Sox Red released RHP Geiser Figueroa.
03/29/24 DSL Red Sox Red released SS Nathanael German.

Liranzo #257 of 257 - Not surprising. $7k bonus last year. Pitched awful.

Argeny #184 - Only reason he was that high is that he signed a $60k bonus last year. He was pretty bad in 15 DSL innings last year.

Mavarez - #241 - 63 wRC+ last year. $10k bonus in '22.

Pena - #180 - Kind of the opposite or Argeny - pitched really well last year (1 ER in 9 IP), but was a late signing for $2k.

Solarte #224 - Cool name, but 44 wRC+ last year. $10k bonus.

RDLC #172 - Older prospect. I liked that he improved from 8 k/9 & 7.6 bb/9 in '22 to 11.3 & 2.9 in in '23, but it wasn't enough. He signed for $10k in '22.

Geiser #174 - 6'4 & signed a $55k bonus last year. 6.8 bb/9 & I guess he wasn't showing improved control this Spring.

German #239 - Signed for $50k last year, but only put up a 54 wRC+

So yeah, nothing too surprising, which is good. There are a few other guys who I wouldn't be surprised if were let go, but not sure if there is another round of cuts coming, or whether these guys show things in their performance, or in their improvement this off season, that their stats cannot.

Bickford goes to NYY, but he's a 4 seam guy so apparently we don't want him anyway.
Well, I guess it depends on what else the pitcher has besides the 4 seam & how willing they are to scrap the whole concept.

The Invisible Hand of Otters has bestowed upon us...

View: https://twitter.com/EvilleOtters/status/1782860522334908608

Smith has spent the last three years in affiliated baseball after being drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 14th round of the 2021 MLB June Amateur Draft. After a stop with the Arizona Complex League Padres in 2021, he spent the entirety of 2022 and 2023 with the Fort Wayne Tin-Caps, San Diego’s High-A affiliate.
Smith is set to report to Boston’s High-A affiliate, the Greenville Drive.
Smith turns 24 next month & was a 14th round pick in 2021.

The 6'2 RHP threw 42.2 pitches for the Padres High-A affiliate last year with a 5.83 ERA. 7.6 k/9, 4.5 bb/9.

More Kirwin...

Kirwin says his time in the MLB Draft League motivated him to go to a pitching lab to increase his velocity. He spent the winter at Tread Athletics and saw his velocity jump up considerably. His best pitch — a cut fastball — went from 84-86 mph to 90-93. And he went from throwing in the low 90s with his four-seam fastball to sitting 95 and topping out at 97. He also added a kick changeup, which utilizes a spiked middle finger in the grip.
A day after that post, the Red Sox contacted Kirwin about joining their organization. He’s flying to Fort Myers, Fla., to take a physical on Wednesday and is expected to join the Red Sox’s Low-A affiliate soon thereafter.
I wonder if Kirwin is solely getting so much national attention due to the Oakland Ballers thing? It's interesting they expect him to go to Salem when the other lab UDFAs went to Greenville.

“The Ballers have something good going,” Kirwin said. “They’re a new team and I think they’re gonna bring a lot for Oakland. It’s a really good thing for Oakland. So I’m excited for them. They’re gonna be great.”

Smith, who turns 24 next month, has been assigned to High-A Greenville and will presumably contribute out of the bullpen for the Drive. With that, it should be interesting to see how he fares with a revamped pitch mix in his return to affiliated ball.

A round of DSL (& 1 FCL) releases with the seasons coming up on May 4th:

Date Transaction
04/24/24 DSL Red Sox Blue released SS Luis Arredondo.
04/24/24 DSL Red Sox Blue released SS Alisson Del Orbe.
04/24/24 DSL Red Sox Blue released OF Cristofher Paniagua.
04/24/24 DSL Red Sox Red released SS Nixson Cueche.
04/24/24 DSL Red Sox Red released C Anger Romero.
04/24/24 DSL Red Sox Red released SS Claudio Evangelista.
04/24/24 FCL Red Sox released RHP Darlyn De La Cruz.
I'll comment on the ones I have higher up in the rankings, & will assume I've talked enough about the lower ones (last list had 257 players on it). I'll also include the signing bonus since it's Draft Day.

Arredondo #248 ($125k)

Del Orbe #114 - I was irrationally excited that Del Orbe had a chance to complete the transition from failed Rangers IF prospect to shut down reliever. Already being 22, looks like the Red Sox didn't think the future was there, despite the 1.23 ERA & 13.5 k/9 last year. (MLFA)

Paniagua #142 - Had a solid DSL season last year with a 106 wRC+, but it was his 2nd DSL season & they likely decided there wasn't enough potential in the bat for him not projecting to a high value defense slot. ($400k)

Cueche #137 - Probably a similar deal to Paniagua. I was intrigued by his 9.8% k-rate, & he only just turned 18 last month, so felt his 86 wRC+ wasn't that bad. But yeah. ($10k)

Romero #256 ($10k)

Evangelista #247 ($30k)

DDLC #141 - Older signee. Repeated DSL & then was called up to FCL where he didn't do great. He's 6'4. ($8k)

04/26/24 RHP Sal Romano assigned to Worcester Red Sox.
View: https://twitter.com/ChrisHenrique/status/1783926037752992061

Red Sox signed pitcher Sal Romano to a minor league deal and have assigned him to Triple-A Worcester. Romano owns a career 0-2 with 17 strikeouts with a 6.12 ERA (25 INN). He’s spent time in the bigs pitching for the Reds, Brewers and Yankees. He last pitched in the majors in 2021.
Romano hasn't just not pitched in MLB since '21...I don't believe the 30 y/o 6'5 RHP has pitched at all since then.
