Los Angeles by way of Roxbury
Tatum himself just admitted he stunk tonight. Maybe it is minutes. If it is. Sit him for a while. These games mean nothing. Organization needs to play the long game. Regardless, Tatum is inconsistent - given the baseline I am talking about is the other MVP level players. It might not matter this year because we are so stacked, but he is. He has games where he is irrelevant.
Inconsistent in what way, exactly? If you're going to argue he doesn't stack up against other MVP caliber players, then how? He has games where he doesn't shoot as well (tonight) - all players do. He still dropped 29 and got some clutch buckets at the end on an "off" night. When has he ever been irrelevant? Even when he has a bad shooting night, he's responsible for creating so much offense for others. Not to mention the defense (you'd take Luka, then?) Not sure what we're complaining about here.

edit: final line was 29/10/7 - like, lol, very bad stink.

Have there been games this season where he has been irrelevant? I would love to take a look at those.

I hate this type of replay, even if we get it. Reminds me of the stupid offsides reviews in NHL.
Agree. In some sense that is more true than the truth, that ball was off Jaylen Brown, even though it was off Durant. The ref saw exactly the right thing, and made the correct spiritual call.

Jokic never has off games.. except for the ones he does. No player has great games every night.

Off games sure. Irrelevant seems a bit far fetched.
Yeah.. I don’t think Tatum is ever irrelevant.. we just see him every day.. if you had to guess between Tatum and Jokic.. which player has 11 20 and under games, 4 under 10 pt games.. vs 10 20 and under and 1 game under 10?

I'd guess Jokic is the former. I don't remember Tatum having multiple under 10 games this season.

And Tatum had multiple 20 point games.. so his numbers are actually a bit deceiving on that one as well. Jokic gets more assists and rebounds but he also has off games and has the offense run through him a lot more consistently every night.

Yeah. His last game, Denver. I love Tatum. He’s a stud. But there are times he gets taken out of games. Refs, a long, rangy defender gets him out of the offense, sometimes he’s trying to go iso against another star too much. There are a lot of big games he’s been a 0. There have also been a lot of big games he’s been a killer. Again, inconsistent. He’s so good at everything I just wished he would stay engaged on D, etc… on the days his O isn’t coming easy, because he can impact a game without torching in 30+ fueled by 3’s. He’s young and he’s figuring it out.

Again, not shooting it well irrelevant. He had 8 assists, the team high. Not his or the Celtics best game, but irrelevant - no.

There are a lot of big games he’s been a 0.
A 0? Okay, which big games? And you never answered - which MVP candidates are you using as a baseline to compare him against?

I love the love the players show eachother after the game, even though I know a lot of old heads HATE it
The funny thing is, as much as we love the handshake lines in the hockey playoffs, at a regular season game, the only love NHL players show each other is during warmups someone might skate over, or some quiet chatter before a face off.

As mentioned above, JT wasn't a zero v DEN. One of the biggest reasons JB was able to go for 40+ is that DEN was content to let him play 1 v 1 because they can't double JB and still pay attention to JT. JT was the one getting doubles thrown at him virtually the entire second half (IIRC), which opens up the court for everyone else.

(Which, BTW, is why JMazz prefers to play other teams stars - Jokic, KD (etc.) - straight up. I guess he figures given who he has on defense, having the star play 1 v 1 against those guys is preferable to having the rest of the other team play 4 v 3. I wonder if he will keep doing this in the playoffs.)

On defense, JT plays as hard as any star. Can you actually point me to a stretch where JT wasn't engaged on the defensive end? And if you're referring specifically to the "not boxing out" Aaron Gordon, I think that had more to do with wondering if he was going to have to help on Jokic rather than a "failure to box out." Jokic and Gordon do that to every team (Jokic talked about this post-game.)

He has been bad the last 3 games. Shooting and defensive intensity/intelligence (yes boxing out is part of defense), turnovers. He’s admitted it himself. It’s ok to admit it as fans.

Bad is one thing. Yes, JT admitted that "he stunk" after PHO, when he had 29/10/7.

But saying he's a zero means something else, at least to me. And even though he's been bad on the offensive end, he's still playing to my eyes pretty good defense overall. Certainly not Doncic level. YMMV.
