All right, all right, Boston.
This jersey that we wear today. It doesn’t say Red Sox. It says Boston…This is our FUCKING city, and nobody’s gonna dictate our freedom. Stay strong. Thank you.

11:10 AM Ohtani versus Bello

Good luck to all the runners, and the young man with the tall task ahead of him.

The return of Duran to the confines that are friendly to some, and terrifying to him...

So here are my hopes for today. Bello returns with a solid outing, getting through 6 innings and minimizing base runners while the Angels sabotage any good work by Ohtani. Would be great to bust out the brooms in a four game series against the team with "the two best players in baseball".

I would have preferred Dalbec in CF (not a Duran fan)

but we’re not living in an Ordinary World so I understand

Given the current construction, this is likely the worst offensive lineup Cora could roll out here. I get that he likes to get guys days off, but sitting two of your better hitters atm (Verdugo and Turner) with Ohtani on the mound irks me a bit. With a chance to sweep and break .500 against a team that is struggling this seems like a 'step on their throat" opportunity.

It’s a day game after a day game?

is that the reason for sitting Verdugo and Turner?

Don’t disagree, but it is a long season. And no Trout on the other side.

I'm guessing that part of that is not wanting Yoshida playing the field in cool, damp conditions and if he DH's Raffy of Casas get the day off to get Turner into the game and the've both been rested recently. If that's the case I'd rather give Yoshi the day off, let Turner DH put Verdugo in right and give each a game off in Minnesota.

I can appreciate that as well as the fact that they are in the midst of a 17 game stretch. That said I don't get the need to rest both in the same game, especially when you consider the makeup of this roster and the fact that one of these guys is your DH. I know that sounds a bit dismissive of the position, but taking 4 ABs in a game is less fatiguing than fielding a position for nine innings.

Need a rule clarification. Has Anaheim dumped the DH? And if the team somehow gets Ohtani out of the games as pitcher, he’s also out of the lineup? Back to 1972?

New rule instituted last year, more or less specifically for Ohtani, allows him to stay in the game as the DH after he's done pitching. Basically, he's his own DH.

Game 17
A rare morning start. It’s Patriot’s Day.
We’ll finish by lunch with this pace of play.
With Bello’s return, the rotation’s deep.
On your marks. Get set. And go for the sweep.
Are these Sox for real? They are if you squint.
The season’s a marathon not a sprint.
We’ve hit our stride and we’re on a nice run.
Focus. Breath deep. There’s a race to be won.

Can someone explain this lineup to me? Is Verdugo tired? Has an ouchie? Has Chang never been able to hit Ohtani? (Not a surprise, if so.) If I recall right, last year's first start for Bello was a disaster b/c of poor defense behind him. Isn't Duran risking a repeat of that, or was it only IF defense that was the issue?

I have to say that I've really been enjoying your daily verses. Love the highlighted bit.

They probably want to get Casas back in the lineup and Yoshida isn't ready to play the field yet. So you're choosing between him and Turner, and Yoshida has the platoon advantage against Ohtani.

Verdugo did a lot of running around the field yesterday. Cora probably wanted to get him a day off, but it would be nice to have his bat to ball skills in there today.

Verdugo hasn't had a game off all season, the only player on the roster for which this is true. Maybe he could have gotten a blow against any one of the lefties they've faced of late, but he didn't, and perhaps now he's really in need. Or maybe he's ducking Ohtani (2 for 9 career).

Verdugo hasn't had a day off in over a week. I think he's the only one who has played every game in this stretch, so an 11 AM game makes sense for a rest.

Good marathon weather, minor headwind. Maybe not ideal for sitting in the stands but maybe they'll challenge the marathon winner in game length!
IIRC, in the early 80s, the Marathon started later; and quicker games meant being able to see leaders through Kenmore Sq. after the game.

Duran's defense has improved greatly now that Tapia is a teammate. :D Seriously this lineup seems to be a byproduct of a 17 game stretch and Cora liking to keep guys fresh. As I posted above, I'm not a fan of giving multiple guys the same day off. I'm also a proponent of putting your best defensive alignment on the field as often as possible and Kike' at SS with Chang on the bench and Duran in CF certainly isn't that.

I still think it's possible to blame 2 losses on Cora this season, but maybe it's also possible that he could have stolen two games and obviously none of that is even provable.... but the biggest issue I think are these lineups when it seems he could rotate just one regular on rest days. It's almost as if he sometimes assumes the team is going to lose no matter the lineup so figures to just get it as painless to the regular starters as possible. To me it shows a lack of killer instinct, but at the same time I can understand the position.

It's a little interesting how much the Sox pregame broadcast team was discussing the possibility of the Sox signing Ohtani. Not that it really means anything, but mildly interesting given that the speculation is coming from the Sox camp itself here.

We could basically give him Sale’s money plus JDM’s, and net a roster spot.
