They left Sena in for the 8th & he got 2nd & 3rd with 1 out, but a ground ball to Teel & a ground ball to Coffey later, they're tied at 1 headed to the 9th.
Sena pitched 3 innings & allowed 1 run on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts.

Brock Bell on for the 9th (Greenville didn't score t9).

Burned . . . Blacklisted
Castro (JM3’s #31 prospect) is interesting. He’s Rule V eligible, but almost no way he gets picked. He’s going to be a tougher call next year, if he finishes strong and either starts or is an early promotion to AA.

Has been better out of the weird environs of Salem, and has continued to walk some and not strike out all the time at the higher level.
Feels like a guy we would have wanted in our top 8-10 two or three years ago.

I know Salem (and the Carolina league as a whole) is an offensive wasteland but man that lineup is rough. Just a combination of guys who are too good for the complex league but not quite ready for full season ball, and pure filler.

Cellucci allowed the 1 run in 2 innings.

Alex Hoppe in for the 8th.
Hoppe pitched a 1-2-3 8th with a strikeout, but Portland lost 7-4.

Blaze was 2-4 with a double.

McDonough was 2-4 with a triple.

Meidroth was 1-3 with a walk.

He's like the one young guy SoxProspects is way higher than me on. I think they have him 20. But yeah, he's like a rich man's Gilberto (who he now plays with) from a couple years ago who was in the top 10.

They seem to aggressively promote players out of there as quickly as they can. Hopefully Johanfran & Yuten get it together soon.

They also sat Alexis Hernandez & Jhostynxon Garcia today who are both ~serviceable.

But yeah, it's not great.

Bell pitched a scoreless 9th & Eduardo Lopez doubled in the MM to start the 10th.

Bell still in for the 10th. Attempts to up the degree of difficulty by walking the tying run to the plate.

Single. Bases loaded 0 out.

2-0 count on the next hitter leads to a mound visit.

Popout to 3rd.

Bases loaded, 1 out, 4-2 lead.
2-run single, plus a throwing error by Gilberto. 2nd & 3rd, tie game.

Bell had been pitching really great for a while before today.

Gilberto does not seem like a serious defensive player.

I take that back. He just threw a guy out at the plate to end the inning lol

Gilberto struck out with 1st & 3rd with 1 out & they didn't score. On to bottom 11, 4-4.

Gilberto was a weird case, he was a toolsy teenager who torched Lowell at 18 when that was a thing, albeit with a ludicrous BABIP because he was very fast and just slapped everything into play. Defensively, he was kind of like early career Duran in the sense of "he's fast, he'll learn to play OF". That was 2019, then 2020 got cancelled while the system was at a low ebb. So you kind of had an 18 month period to dream on him putting everything together and being a plus CF with an above average bat. Then he never developed offensively or defensively, I mean he put up C Note level walk rates without the power or defense. I think if 2019 Gilberto were in the system today he might not ever crack the top 20. Castro has a much better approach, he's only put up a BB rate less than 10% last year in the FCL, and even that was 9.2%, and he doesn't K a ton, there's some pop there and he's still only 20. Plus it seems like he can actually play an adequate outfield. I don't think he's any risk to get popped in the Rule V, but if he has a Rafaela-esque power surge next year he could jump quickly (and remember, Rafaela in his age 20 season wasn't on anybody's radar because he was a great defender hitting .251/.305/.424; age 21 he started hitting the ball harder and now he's a stud).

Right, they seem to use Salem to get guys acclimated to full season ball and then push them to Greenville as long as the underlying metrics look good. I put Johanfran & Yuten in a bucket with Alcantara as guys who are too good for FCL but not quite ready physically for Salem. Bleis got hurt, though he would hopefully be in Greenville if healthy, Brannon got hurt, none of last year's other promising FCL grads (Abrham Liendo, Johnfrank, Lyonell James, maybe Ravelo from a D standpoint) really popped this year. Opening Day roster should be fun for Salem next year but the second half is more often than not going to be a grind.

Greenville was tired of playing so they brought in Nate Tellier & now they are no longer playing.

I don't think Alcantara was too good for FCL & they just moved him up to fill Coffey's slot lol, but otherwise totally agree.

Also don't think Coffey was ready for the next level, but yeah.

Sorry, never wrote this up yesterday. They lost 5-4 in 11 innings.

Teel was 0-3 with 2 walks & Roman was 1-4 with a walk.

Castro was 3-5 with a homer.

Max Ferguson was 2-4 with a triple.

Eduardo Lopez was 1-3 with a double & 2 walks.

Thx y'all!

Sometimes it does feel like I'm just talking to myself & it's always more fun for me when other people are chiming in, giving opinions, expressing excitement for certain prospects, etc. But I totally get it.
