Being a CF is a lot more than just defense..... You didn't say that Lin is the best Defensive CF on earth...

I have no problem admitting that Lin is a Elite defensive CF, but he has a noodle bat. His most comparable player is probably Iglesias, although I don't think Lin is as good a CF as Iglesias is a SS.

This is silly, my point was that Hassan would be more useful on the 40 man roster than Lin and I still believe that. Hassan has hit at every level and we already have an elite CF in the major leagues. Not to mention two or 3 backups that can fill in as CF's if Ells gets dinged up.

you are obviously overrating defense and I'm putting more weight in Offense. I said Lin is useful as a Pinch runner/ Defensive replacement and while there is some value in that, I'd rather have a guy who can competently handle the bat.

So yes if you are counting Offense (a huge part of baseball) then LIn makes Ellsbury look like Willie Mays..
You are setting up a false choice. The choice is not Hassan on the 40-man or Lin on the 40-man. The choice is, Lin on the 40-man or Lin lost via the Rule 5 draft or waivers to create a free 40-man roster spot that could be used as needed. Given that there is no need to prematurely sacrifice Lin when the roster spot is not yet needed and no reason to prematurely add Hassan when he isn't yet needed, I don't understand the purpose of this discussion.

Linares, Lin, Hassan... I like it, much better than Kroeger/Repko.

I wonder how high his stock will go if he continues to put up numbers similar to his career average of 293/.396/.457 in AAA. Many seem to think he's nothing more than a AAAA type player because of his lack of both speed defensively and elite power potential. I think his strong arm and lack of speed would play really well in Fenway's LF and his OPB would more than make up for a few points in slg that the prototypical LF might have.

I agree, but unfortuantaly I think it's gonna take a trade to a team like Cleveland for him to prove it.... He could serve as a sweet pinch hitter off the bench though. How nice would it be to bring in a guy like Hassan to PH in games that Punto plays?

Here's some confirmation of his assignment to Pawtucket.

“@MikeAndrewsSP: Confirmed that OF Alex Hassan is indeed headed to the @PawSox”

That would be required for him to start, but he could end up being a 4th outfielder for Boston. If he puts up a 300 / 380 / 460 line in Pawtucket, he'd be a minimum salary version of Darnell McDonald.

I find it funnier than I should, that you actually called someone "a minimum salary version of Darnell McDonald."

Saving that $60,000 means the Sox will be able to sign Roy Oswalt!

Hassan started out very strong in 2011 but tailed off quite a bit by about half-way through the season. My recollection was that there was an injury involved but after I went back and copied his lines from box scores on milb.com I see that this occurred before missed 7 games in mid-July. He was taken out of the game of July 17th when he tried to make a catch of a triple in the 9th inning. He supposedly missed the next seven games because of plantar faciitis. It is possible that this was bothering him a while before he tried to make the catch. I used BB/(BB+AB) because I didn't have the data to compute OBP. See two graphs below of running averages.

PAWTUCKET – Alex Hassan is listed on Boston’s 40-man roster. Such a distinction helps spell out what manager Gary DiSarcina has to do now that Hassan is back with the PawSox.

“Alex is going to get worked in. We’ve got a boatload of outfielders now, but he’s a priority. He’s a 40-man guy. He’s going to play a little first base,” said DiSarcina prior to Thursday’s game against Buffalo getting rained out. “Start him off slow – he hasn’t been playing a ton. Manage his games played early so he’s feeling comfortable and healthy. Forty-man guy … they have to play, there’s no doubt about it.”

I thought Hassan deserved a bump in here after a 2 for 2 night with 2 BB.

His overall line for the year so far (at Pawtucket only): (178 AB) .315/.430/.461- 35BB, 45K

I posted on the main board about him as a possible cheap RHH platoon 1B/LF guy with Carp/Nava. It must be tough to learn a new position though, let alone mid-year. Nearly all of his power comes against LHP. (SLG split is .623 vs LHP and .376 vs RHP- this year).  I'm curious (I don't know where to look) at his P/PA but with high avg, BB and K numbers he seems like he'd be a guy with great P/PA numbers. He's reportedly a strong enough kid that maybe he'll grow into hitting with a little more power. Seems like he could contribute some value at the ML level sometime soon. If not for the Red Sox then for some other team.

His BABIP is .424 this year. I'd be curious to find out what if he's a guy who typically has a high BIP number because of the his approach. His slash line is a bit above his career norms.

Hassan slumped badly to start 2014, hitting .217/.318/.303/.621 in 176 PA over 44 games. In early June when the Sox were decimated by injuries & Daniel Nava's slump, and with Bryce Brentz on the PawSox DL with a hamstring strain, Hassan still got a two-game call-up to Boston as the only other healthy outfielder on the 40-man roster (going 1-for-7 with a walk and 5 Ks).

Then from June 17 through July 18, Alex went on a .396/.470/.703/1.173 tear in 115 PA over 26 games. He homered in 4 straight games sandwiched around the All-Star break to cap off the stretch.

Today he went 0-for-3 with a walk. Since the end of that hot streak he's hit .226/.338/.226/.565 in 65 PA over 16 games.

There is never anything like playing for your favorite/hometown team. Alex is living the dream. He totally "gets it". Best wishes with the Red Sox West.
