Will there be gifts? Cake? Gummies? All of the above?

True to form, a one season victory tour like Jeter just isn't good enough for Arod.

I'd like to announce that I'm retiring at the end of the 2041 calendar year, give or take.

As much as we all love to bash Slappy, we don't know the context of what he said (thanks, Twitter). He was doing an interview and could have been asked if he saw himself playing beyond his current contract.

That said, I hope the Red Sox give him a purse

edit: Damn you, Monbo

He's basically saying he won't play past his current contract, that's all. Not sure why this is such a big deal. He's gonna get his money and since the Yankees were stupid enough to sign him to 10/275 in the first place I can't blame a guy who seeing the contract through.

Alex Rodriguez plans on retiring at the end of the 2017 season after playing out his contract with the New York Yankees, the designated hitter told ESPN on Wednesday.

"I won't play after next year," Rodriguez told ESPN on Wednesday. "I've really enjoyed my time. For me, it is time for me to go home and be dad."

So? It still doesn't make clear whether he was answering a question of not. Either way, as SJH said, this is no big deal in regards to timing of the news

Going to be a hard landing when he doesn't get the Tour Love that Papi will get. A-Rod's ego may not survive.

He probably wanted to wait to announce it until the middle of a Red Sox World Series game, but he thought that might not happen for a while.

(I kid, I kid)

In all honesty, I hope they give him absolutely nothing. No gifts, no jokes, not even a damned honorable mention.

And I hope other teams follow suit. I had a certain respect for Derek Jeter. I have less than none for Alex Rodriguez.

Even most Yankee fans don't like him. I have intensely disliked him since the TEX days, although I will say that he was a lot easier to take last year, not just a good season hitting but seemingly an entirely different personality, much more tolerable.

Not sure why players feel the need to announce their plans so far in advance. Maybe he wants a 2 year farewell tour. I have to imagine if he is a few HR (within 20 HR) from Bonds record he might be tempted to go another year regardless of salary. Obviously, he has the right to change his mind between now and then.
