Brady Extension?

I'm not surprised. Despite all the hand-waving about Brady's supposed decline, he's playing nearly as well as he did in 2007. Here's a plot of his ANY/A per year vs. the league average. I skipped 2008 for obvious reasons:

I'd rather hold off on that one. He's got three years left under contract. If he plays at an MVP level again next year they can revisit but he's already signed past the expiration date of like every quarterback ever.

You have no fucking idea.

Need to see a little more before I commit to him longterm.
I like your style

I mean he's Tom Brady but I still don't see what the point is on signing up for an age 43 season now. I've said in the Jimmy G thread that he's going to QB here as long as he wants, but I think its pretty much overkill to do an extension now. His body is going to go at some point, just check in after next season and see how he feels.

I don't care if they roll him out in a wheelchair and they go 0-16. (Probably no way he does worse than 11-5 in wheelchair, just saying it's ok with me if he struggles a bit at the end.)

I don't either, I think he had a blank check here as QB before tonight. I just don't see the point in doing it for 2020 and 2021 today.

I don't think it's going to matter.

Larry Bird walked in to the Garden one day to deliver his decision -- he was retiring. Celtics brass told him to delay submitting his papers for a few days. Doing so would have put several million into Bird's pocket. Larry said no -- "I'm not going to steal your money."

See pretty much the same thing here. If they extend him, it will be in a way that doesn't punish the team when he walks away. And when he's not up to it, he'll walk away.

No longer with Boston at the time, but Keith Foulke deserves credit for acting likewise.

Yeah, I think there is a lot of agreement here. The real issue is the salary cap and, frankly, I think while Brady is loyal to the team, there are strong, principled reasons to be loyal to his fellow players around the league and not play for table scraps simply because he's living the dream.

I think Brady barely grasps there is a world outside of football but, within that realm, he's been a very good decision maker while being in particularly subtle positions given who he is and what he's been able to do.
