PKing 4th liner, RFA at season's end with a $600k cap hit. 2nd rounder in '09 for Detroit.

I'm intrigued

Good flyer them. Two way contract too I believe. Coming off a knee injury and can't be any worse than Shithead.

A move with no downside. I like the way Sweeney/Julien have been holding auditions for winger on the fourth line with Kemppainen and Randell.

Hockey Prospectus scouting report summary from Jan. 2015:

"Ferraro plays a mature game. He is a trustworthy forward who can contribute in all three zones. In many ways, the consummate Red Wings forward, like a young Dan Cleary, or more recently Darren Helm or Justin Abdelkader. Could probably contribute in the NHL right now and seems likely to force himself into the lineup by the start of next season."

I like this move. Ferraro has wheels and is a good forechecker and penalty killer. he can play c or w. I think this relegates Talbot to the AHL forever and has a chance to be a regular on the 4th line going forward. It makes me feel better about losing Cunningham for nothing last year for no reason.

Ferraro is reasonably young, kills some penalties and scored at a moderate clip in the AHL (27 goals in 70 games a year ago). Doesn't have much NHL experience, only 17 games total, 10 of which were this season.

The Bruins 4th line has been a bit of a debacle this year. Shithead is useless. No points, 42.6 CF%. Randell's chipped in 3 goals, but 42.2% CF. Despite Shithead's recent PK cameo, neither of those 2 contribute on special teams. Talbot can help kill penalties, but has been bad otherwise. Kemppainen's the best of the bunch, but he's been elevated to the 3rd line with the current injuries to Pastrnak and Vatrano.

In short, Ferraro isn't a savior or anything, but he's a young kid that gives them another option on what has been a pretty useless the 4th line. Good type to take a flier on when all it costs is the contract.

If you delete the inexplicable shithead trade, Sweeney's record looks pretty good overall. Took a hit with the Dougie trade, but that was a weird situation and all of the other moves seem to make sense.

Still blocking out all memories of the McQuaid contract, I see? Don't worry, I try to every day.

On the whole, I agree with you. The McQuaid contract and the Shithead trade are two huge black marks against him though.

I've tried this, esp during the games, but every time McQuaid fires a puck down the ice for a completely unforced icing its a sobering reminder.

Anyways, absolutely no harm in taking a flyer on Ferraro, esp if he can bring some value to the PK which has been the Bruins achilles heel. If it amounts to less Shithead that is always a plus too.

Circling back to this, Ferraro has been a great pickup. He can skate, plays responsible defense, can fit on the PK and on any line but Krejci's, and he can score a bit too. Reminds me of Paille with scoring ability a bit (hat tip to DJ Bean). So far I've been very pleased with his play.

Good article from the aforementioned DJ here.
