CFB 2023 Bowls & Championships: The *best* gosh darn thread a television executive could ask for

The problem is the play clock. There’s no provision for pausing play clocks in CFB, it MUST be reset. So you could have an offensive player go down after running 20 seconds, and then the offense gets a new play clock and could run more time.
Then they should make a provision you can pause the play clock for an injury :).

I cant imagine that's too complicated.

Like I always say, there’s nothing better than a college football game day. (And nothing worse than every other college football day)

Gonna be fun seeing the SEC next year, particularly Georgia, Texas and Bama

hopefully UCLA USC Oregon and Washington do some damage in the B1G but they’re losing 3 decent QB’s

For what it’s worth, the NFL charges timeouts for injuries (including a potential 4th timeout). Out of timeouts? Penalty.

I won't stand for this unfair treatment of the truly injured (and their team) any more. Something MUST be done!

All jokes aside, thanks again for the info and chiming in on this stuff.

Brutal clock managment. Throwing the ball on 3rd down before their chipshot FG to go up two scores??...it saved Texas a timeout and led to all of that unneeded stress at the end of the game.

As great as today was, one last swipe at the powers that be: Having any major, televised sporting event, that didn’t go to overtime, ending at 1 AM east coast time is ridiculous. Not the way to showcase your marquee event.

random observations from the Rose Bowl:

- it was pretty ridiculous how little respect both defensive secondaries gave the receivers, the safeties were sitting on the 1st down line pretty much all game
- I know CW says to choose to defend in OT so that you know what you need when you're on offense. I don't know that it was worth it for Alabama because it meant playing the OT in the all-Michigan supporters endzone instead of the 50-50 endzone.
- it was probably evident from TV but more so live how bad Michigan's punt returner had the yips. Misjudging the ball, catching it like a medicine ball, etc

Ewers really did a poor job of giving his guys a chance to make a play after the long pass to Whittington, which was a very nice throw. You need to throw that in the middle of the field and hope to win a jump ball or get DPI.

Athletically, thought the Washington PR's fumble was worse....perhaps misjudged, ended up w/his arms extended way too far from his body.

Anyone know what time kickoff will be for the title game? I see game time listed as 7:30... is it going to be close to that, or more like sometime after 8?

I'm on hold for what will likely be another hour, so I'm bored. If I'm recapping a conversation that happened here, apologies.

JJ Watt tweeted that the Rose Bowl field "is the nicest piece of grass I've ever stepped on, by far." It touched off a conversation re: the Rose Bowl permanently hosting the title game, instead of rotating it to NFL stadiums.

I think there is something magic about the Rose Bowl atmosphere and it's also unmistakably "college football." It's especially beautiful around sunset, although maybe the dramatic sky contributed to all the difficulty catching punts.

The counter is, I guess, that it's a crappy facility. I've never been, but it's the same construction model as the Yale Bowl and almost as old, so I can see where that criticism lies.

No matter where you stand on issues like conference realignment, NIL, the portal, paying players, etc., the fabric of college football is undeniably changing. All sports value traditions but college football moreso than any others imo. I think installing the RB as the permanent home of the championship game would be a good thing.

Thank you for coming to my regurgitated TED talk.

Except I'm sure the Rose Bowl will want to be always played at 2PM Pasadena time on New Year's Day. The schedule is out for the next 2 years and the Rose Bowl has the quarterfinals both years on New Year's Day.. I think the Rose Bowl will be happy with that setup going forward.

Is there something magical about 2PM vis-a-vis 1PM or 12:30PM? Get that game started a wee bit earlier and you can start the next one sooner as well. Maybe be done by midnight.

So it ends during the sunset, primarily

Secondarily to give people time to have lunch and get over from the parade. But you can move that, time-wise. (Well a little. It’s still NYD and all that) Can’t move the sun.

The FCS game not being at 12:00 today just doesn't make any sense. Although I guess I'm also surprised that the NFL isn't filling that time slot.
Yup you’re right

we do have UNC basketball followed by Arky basketball to fill the empty slot though

Is this a 7:30 kickoff, or one of those "we list it as 7:30 but don't kick off til 8:15" kinda things?

Game's indoors obviously but Houston is under a tornado watch til 9 local time, so I suppose there could be some sort of delay if that becomes a warning at some point tonight

Michigan wins. Harbaugh is carried off the field on his players shoulders. He lets the NFL bidding war for him play out over the next couple of weeks and jumps ship.

This game is 2003 Patriots vs. Colts, played on a neutral field for all the marbles.

Michigan has a great defense, a powerhouse running game, and a QB who doesn't go bonkers but is very capable of making all the big plays in key moments and is very efficient.

Washington has a so-so defense, a surprisingly good running game, and an electric, pinball-machine, passing offense.

Should be a very interesting matchup.

Did Lee Corso just say the #2 team playing in the NC game gets no respect?

I have doubts Johnson can be effective if he even plays.
