I sometimes like to post photos from news articles, but often get an error that the file is TOO big (I think RBYB might have something to do wit this).

How can you compress a photo for posting (I tried compressing with iMac but all it does is convert it to a zip file). And what is the max file size?

Thanks in advance.

Right Here
I ran into this where I saved the file to my desktop, opened it in Paint and resized it to a smaller size. Then simply selected the contents of the smaller pic, copied, and pasted to my post.

I have no idea how to do it from a computer but if I post a picture from my photo library (iPhone), I get the option of actual size, large, medium, or small. If it’s a photo I took with my phone, actual size and often large are too big to post so I have to go medium. I don’t know what the maximum size is so I just keep trying a smaller size until it works. If phone posting is an option, perhaps try that. Also, it has to be from your photo library (so you have to save the pic). Copying and pasting doesn’t seem to give the same options.

Unfortunately, I don't have Paint (although I thought it was an app that came with all Macs. Looks like not.

That worked. Just used it in the Military V&N thread. Thanks.

@Preacher The successful attempt I mentioned in Military V&N was completed using the steps you suggested

I just tried doing the same thing from my Mac and it worked.

1. Save image to photo folder and select file type (I used JPG)
2. In the post display, click on "Attach files" in the lower left corner
3. Browse to photo
4. Click upload
5. Select thumbnail or full image (I selected full image)
6. Visual goodness

The original file size was reduced from 2.2Mb to 52Kb.

Good to know. Thanks. I never tried it from a computer but I only post from a computer when I’m at work.

Preview on mac - open it and go to ‘export’, change the file extension to jpg and there’s a slider for file size / compression / quality (forget exactly what it says now)

I have used a site like imgur when the photo size is too big to naturally upload directly to SOSH. imgur allows you to upload to a private album if you dont want it to be publicly visible to anyone without the link. Also. Since you will be uploading via a link the photo quality is usually not degraded/impacted.
