We even got the Sam Cassell big-balls dance from Rubio Rubin of Guatemala:

I am loving every minute of the Rubinaissance. He was an Eredivisie starter at age 18, but had bounced from Xolo’s B team to USL. Based on TB’s USYNT updates, I thought he was a surefire star. I had completely missed his switch to Guatemala last summer, but he has been a big part of their comeback from the CONCACAF death penalty.

All 4 quarterfinals are going to be watchable and very interesting, not least because they're doubleheaders so the crowds should be large and well-lubricated.

Sat 7pm ET: Panama vs Qatar, followed by
Sat 9:30pm ET: Mexico vs Costa Rica. Gonna be a rocking Cowboys Stadium.

Sun 5pm ET: Guatemala vs Jamaica, warmup to
Sun 7:30pm ET: USA vs Canada, in Cincinnati

I could honestly see any of those 8 teams winning, although surely USA has the best chance to advance. USA would play the Panama-Qatar winner in the semis (which would be 10pm ET next Wednesday, in San Diego).

I think Qatar has a bunch of accumulation suspensions, so I think Panama has a serious leg up. But Qatar has proven resilient.

Admittedly I haven’t been paying close attention to Yueill but this has to be a joke, right? Right????
A cruel one. If Tessmann can't be had, I'd rather see Alex Mendez out there, or Pomykal. Is Malik Tillman healthy yet? Hasn't Keaton Parks been balling out for NYCFC? Can BGuti be spared for a week and a half? Christ, even Kellyn Acosta can go out there and at least do a job.

Pomykal just made the bench for FC Dallas the other day as he's coming back from injury. Tillman is already back in Europe. I'd imagine Tessman is too.

This is likely just continental folks that are available with little to no warning.

Acosta's been recently hurt, Tim Tillman's been recently hurt, Mendez needs to fight like hell at his club, Malik Tillman needs to sort his transfer out.

The continued non-rating of Parks by this coaching staff is weird, but is what it is at this point. Yueill is a pick which will very much annoy people, but I just can't be bothered much about an injury replacement for a B-team Gold Cup.

Most of those guys aren’t on the provisional roster and can’t be added. My initial reaction was that I realllyyy want to see Gutierrez with the senior team. Or on anUSMNT really. His omission from everything has been annoying, but again he’s not on the provisional roster. Of the available players I was hoping to see Tim Tillman.

It’s more that they had the chance to bring in a more attacking player to replace Soñora and instead chose a more defensive player, and that player was Yueill. Glass half full, it probably means lots of Djordje (who wasn’t great last game) and perhaps some Ferreira in a more withdrawn role which is something I want more of.

Ultimately @Jimy Hendrix is right, it’s probably not anything to be too worked up about.

Best explanation we're going to get:

Parks is a mystery why he wasn't even in the consideration set. Most of the others weren't on provisional roster, as noted by y'all earlier. And so, if it's Yueill vs Tim Tillman vs Acosta, my reaction is "sure, whatever, doesn't matter - it's halfway through a B-team tournament". But also a little, "why are these our only choices?".

And a bit of, "if this isn't an opportunity to give someone new a chance to acclimate to the system, when could possibly be that chance? Every player has to learn sometime, right?"

You might have thought Cuba were the losers in Group D, but actually...

View: https://twitter.com/BabaGol_/status/1676848473696501760

""BREAKING:Sandy Sanchez, Cuba's goalkeeper, decided to abandon the national team camp after the match against Canada and to stay in the U.S. Sanchez is the fifth Cuban player to do so in this #GoldCup tournament
Cuba is lucky they only had five defections, especially since their first match was played in South Florida! This stuff seems to happen every time Cuba qualifies for the Gold Cup or plays in a YNT tournament hosted by the US.

What the heck are these odds (via The Athletic)? This looks like something @djbayko would make his mortgage payment on.

67134

I would be a buyer of USA at +275 and Jamaica at +1200, certainly; Guatemala at +2500 would probably be more fairly valued at +800-1000 based on what I saw in the group stage. Mexico is nowhere near +110, I'd sell that hugely. They could very easily lose in any of the upcoming rounds, I'd probably put them around +300 and reduce everyone else accordingly.

Those seem about right to me. Mexico has been playing well this tournament. The Qatar game was crazy fluky. Second best team is a B team. I think Mexico would and should be favored over USA head to head with these rosters.

I’m buying Jamaica at those odds. They looked at least on par with the US. They might have a tougher road having to play both Mexico and US to win it all, though.

I’m selling Canada. They’ve looked awful.

Really good first half. Super physical. Ref let Mexico get away with a couple pretty cynical fouls that could have been cards. Mexico has been more dangerous. Not letting CRC through and going from defense to offense quickly, but CRC has kept things level because Campbell has bossed the midfield.

First goal feels like it will come either because Mexico finally gets on the end of one of those passes in the box or because CRC finds a seam and slips one through. Former seems more likely that the latter to me. Mexico has been really strong in the back, but subs and fatigue could matter if it stays scoreless for awhile. If Campbell fatigues, Mexico gets a big edge.

CRC no changes through 80 minutes? They are looking run down.

Very comfortable in the end for Mexico. Costa Rica could never break through in the final third. Mexico was a brick wall. One half chance on a corner but otherwise they were never a danger to score.

There was a chance CRC had around 10' where a shot went off, Memo needed a full stretch to get there, and the rebound was juicy. But the winger on that side didn't crash the far post when the shot went off, he waited until it was obvious the rebound was coming to him, and by then it was too late. But if he charges in opportunistically for that, it's at least a 0.50 xG chance.

Anyway, Mexico looked pretty vulnerable. Also, Christopher Nunez (who plays in Greece) had some slick ball control and retention in central midfield, he stood out to me.

If you’re comfortable with an arb calculator you should be able to bet the field by taking proportionate bets on the 5 remaining teams other than Mexico and get somewhere around -135. Juice will be lower after today, though odds will change dramatically if Canada or Guatemala win.

Jamaica withstand a late game flurry from Guatemala, advance to meet Mexico.

These Guatemalan kits are gorgeous.

Jamaica hang on in a game that was better than people may have thought it might be. Their fitness was huge. It was a game with incredible pace, but they get it done in regular time. Burke with a very late yellow is out for the semi.

After a game like that, the extra rest day for Mexico could matter but it should be a really good semifinal in Vegas.

Is this shit starting at 730 or is that the studio show start time. I’m watching tennis replays with my wife and need to know when to dip into the other room.

I don’t want to be insensitive, but isn’t it clear that we’re going to need to go to the 4th official?

Edit: Unless it’s worse than it looks. Not encouraging to see a medic donning surgical gloves.

Imagine if the injury was more serious. Would they have also been stripping that guy like that?
Pretty clear that they haven’t done enough planning for an injury to a game official.

We were fortunate not to lose to the only real team we played in the group stage. And we look like hell early here.

US has been looking more in control of the game as it has progressed, but with the sloppiness you expect from a B team. That should have been a red on Cavallini.

I don’t recall seeing a red for a non-cynical challenge that low on the leg in the VAR era. I think yellow is the right call.
