The Farrell question..
He didn't answer it at all. Said he told Farrell to focus on his health, hopes to meet with him in person by the end of the homestand and talk to him about the team.

In my opinion I don't think it's a certainty that Farrell is gone, but either way they aren't making a firm commitment to him.

I found it interesting that in Henry's opening statement he took the time to highlight DD's first trade as the GM/President of the Marlins which was Mike Lowell for 3 prospects that didn't have major league careers.

That's pretty much an admission that ownership forced him to deal the farm in Detroit.

Or it's revisionist history meant to calm the nerves of those who believe he'll strip the system

How about this putrid proposal from Gammo. Think this would qualify as stripping...
Gammons writes the Red Sox "can get Sonny Gray for Moncada, Espinoza, Devers, Benintendi." http://www.gammonsdaily.com/peter-gammons-dombrowski-signing-ushers-in-newest-chapter-in-red-sox-baseball/

I remember being afraid the Yankees had the next big thing with Ed Yarnall.  TNSTAAPP, I guess.

Henry asked about his opinions of sabermetrics.

Says he thinks because they hired Bill James early the media claims they're focused on it but it's not "overwhelming basis" for decisions, it's a tool, but it hasn't been "the driving force in baseball ops."

Not the answer I expected there.

Henry on analytics: 'I've always been an advocate of data...Its not the overwhelming basis for our philosophy. It's a tool.'

DD just praised by name the young OF of Betts, Castillo and Bradley. (In addition to X, Swihart and EdRod).

It shouldn't be that shocking. The spreadsheet narrative has always been overblown. If you take a moment to think about it, for an organization that has focused on building up the farm as much as they have under Henry, scouting has to play a big part of it. Analytics can only tell you so much about young prospects who are still developing.

I haven't disagreed with one single thing he's said.  And it's really clear.  This is his show now.  I think the GM role is important, but this is going to be Dombrowski's team.

Off of this comment, I expect a totally different Red Sox team on the field  that takes the field on April 4, 2016 in Cleveland.

Yeah. The idea that analysis is somehow unique to the Red Sox is one of the Boston media's many inexplicable storylines.

Dombrowski cited power pitching and defense as elements of game he prioritizes in team-building #RedSox

He's preaching to the choir so far. Emphasizing that he's not there to blindly tear things down, acknowledging the value that is in place (when the public wants to hear otherwise), but also getting to the point of what we need.

Why not? Theo said it a few hunderd times when he was here.

So in one press conference DD shot down many of the negative traits he saddled in Detroit, due to overzealous ownership.

Wonder if Ben will do the same when he gives his next press conference?

Sure, but this didn't sound like clarifying that running a baseball team is more complicated than just looking at analytics. Not a shocking answer, but a little surprising.

Edit: Maybe I was reading too much into it. Still, he sounded... I don't know, a little frustrated by the question. When Theo would say it he always sounded like he was just saying stats had to be put in context as part of the approach. Henry sounded a little different.

he can call me.  I'm glad to put Hanley up in my basement.

seriously, I am glad to hear what he said about the OF.  That is encouraging.  Also/relatedly glad to hear about emphasis on power pitching and defense, and that he specifically singled out X, Swihart, and EdRod for praise, suggesting they (as well as Betts, Castillo, JBJ) are building blocks.    Sounds like DD is saying the right things.  Will be interesting to hear where things go from here.

Dombrowski explains decision to trade prospects in Detroit: "We had the pedal to the metal to try to win a world championship every year."
If people are going to be highly skeptical of this, that is fine. And it's legitimate also to question continued willingness to work for an owner with a wrongheaded approach.

I'm just not in a mood to hear it from Dan Duquette bodyguards who defended the failure to build a farm system with "but Harrington wanted to win now!"

It seems to me that these guys will alter their approaches according to owners" priorities, and I don't hold it against them. And so I'm not sure that the things that transpired in Detroit under his watch will be terribly predictive of the next few years

I don't think it'll be that radically different.  The core isn't that bad, but I'd expect him to make a few signature moves so that when/if they succeed everyone can point to his moves as a big part of why.

To me that says:
1. Cueto/Price are going to be high on the shopping list.  I'd imagine he'll hang onto EdRod like he's made of solid gold.  Owens or (more likely) Johnson are likely gone for the right piece.
2. His GM's first assignment is probably going to be finding some corner position offensive fire power and then they'll pick what they like the price tag on the most.

My personal shot in the dark is Carlos Gonzalez for one of Johnson/Owens plus some additional pieces for the Rockies as one such signature move.  A big deal for Cueto/Price as another.  The tough answers will be at first and third, that is where they'll decide the success of the 2016 Red Sox.
