CHICAGO –Don Mattingly and the Dodgers will part ways, sources tell CBSSports.com.
The decision is being described as mutual.
Dodgers higherups like Mattingly very much, but it was apparent there wasn't support for the long-term. Word is Mattingly felt he was treated very well by baseball president Andrew Friedman and others, but the sides ultimately decided it was better to move on.
An announcement is expected later Thursday.

Not surprising at all on this one. If they didn't reach the world series I felt like he was done.

The name to watch for the next
#Dodgers manager is Gabe Kapler, he is the early leader in the clubhouse followed by Dave Martinez.

Do managers have to go through PED testing?

Mattingly will be the manager in Miami next season, at least that's what Tim K said this morning on SC

I don't think many mangers could survive operating under an active cap hovering around $200M and not getting out of the division series.  Next year's manager will only have ~$160M hanging over his head with the current roster.  It dips to $135M in 2017, and $103M in 2018 with the current roster.  Let the FA signings begin.

Fun fact about Don Mattingly's managerial record:

June 22, 2013-Sept. 3, 2013: 53-13, .803 win percentage
Rest of managerial career: 393-350, .529 win percentage, extrapolates to 85.7 wins per season.

The Dodgers had that one amazing stretch of baseball (when Yasiel Puig came up and lit the team on fire) that saved Donny's job in 2013.  That stretch remains the only notable part of Mattingly's managerial career.  I hope Mattingly sends Puig a Christmas card every year thanking him for two extra years of paychecks.

This is a pretty misleading post.  The first 2 years of Mattingly's tenure were at the tail end of the McCourt ownership/handing over to the MLB then the new ownership, when the team was slashing payroll left and right and had practically nobody in the farm system.  He won 82 and 86 games those 2 years, which is pretty alright considering the situation he had to work with.  The next 3 seasons after the new ownership took over and did start spending, he won 92, 94 and 92 games, winning the NL West each year.

I don't think Mattingly is a great manager by any stretch, and you are probably right that he would be fired if they didn't turn the season around in 2013.  But they did.  I think it's crap that you just take out a 66 game hot streak, and then fail to mention that 40% of his managerial tenure was under the ownership of Frank McCourt, and say "His winning percentage was only .529".  It seems like you are going out of your way to cherry pick numbers just to shit on the guy.

Jerry Adair's home state
“among managers with a winning percentage of .550 or greater in the regular season and at least 15 postseason games managed, Mattingly has the second-worst postseason winning percentage (.421), behind only Grady Little.” -- ESPN

I think the dodgers did the right thing, unless of course, they hire Grady Little. Or they could hire a guy who can't manage .550 in the regular season.

If he was under contract he gets those anyway.  But if that stretch got him an extension he should send at least 20% of his earnings to Puig.

Yeah, they did that once already.  If they would hire him again they should be asked to leave MLB for good.

Mattingly's postseason winning percentage is due to his 8-11 record there. I dunno if he's a good manager or not, but that's such a stupidly small sample size I'd want other data besides that to confirm his unfitness to be manager.

And Grady's is due to his 6-9 record.
An even smaller sample size.

Just saying...
(Of course, we do have "other data besides that to confirm his [Little's] unfitness to be manager.")

Little, of course, we all knew was gonna fuck things up when given the chance because we had seen it happen time and again in the regular season. His worst habits emerged in the playoffs at the worst possible time.

So pointing out Little's postseason record is also not a great indicator of his idiocy because it doesn't account for the mistakes we saw beforehand.

Anywho, sounds like Mattingly's going to interview for the vacant Marlins job.
