Tickets are on sale now for the best baseball conference around. This year's seminar is being held at Boston University on August 22 and 23, and will feature Ben Cherington, an amazing scouting panel, Tom Tippett, a yet to be determined Kansas City Royals front office person, Wendy Thurm, demonstrations by Motus and Diamond Kinetics, scientists, doctors, sabermetricians, writers, and more. The list of presenters will be updated as more confirm, and we fully expect another big name or two, and hopefully some surprises.

This is not just a stat conference! We strive to show how cutting edge science is blended with advanced baseball statistics and traditional scouting in order to more accurately assess teams and players. We also have presentations on the business of baseball, and even the history of the sport. Our student abstract contributors have received praise from all, and many received job offers from MLB teams and/or stat companies based on their seminar research.

The past few seminars have sold out early, so if you want to attend this excellent event get your tickets soon. As always, every penny in ticket sales for this wonderful baseball weekend will be donated to the Jimmy Fund! Tickets are only $140 for the weekend, with student tickets at $65. A box lunch, which is surprisingly good, is also available for $10 a day.

Talk baseball in a cool, informal, atmosphere, where its not unusual to see an ex-MLB player, a scout, or a front office person holding court in the lobby, while helping cure cancer. If you're a baseball fan, I cannot imagine anything better.

If you've got ex-ballplayers in the lobby holding court and curing cancer at the same time, you're drastically underpricing this thing.

And let me be the first of many to say it's awesome, its genesis here is doubly awesome, I've gone (let's not talk about it), I'm going (happy to talk about it!), and why the eff haven't you gone and gotten a ticket yet, moron?

I won't be able to make it this year because of a wedding but this has been worth every penny both years I've gone.

Jumping in, this event has been awesome when I've been able to attend in the past years.  Cheers to the organizers for keeping the pricing accessible so fans of the game can attend, and thanks to everyone involved for donating the time, space, and materials to keep making this happen.

The biggest problem with Saberseminar is that it's too short. One of the best weekends of the year.

For those of us who are going for the first time: What can we expect in terms of the schedule?  Is it a series of presentations, one after another?  And will the Saturday session be done in time to go to the game that night?

It is a series of presentations, with breaks and demos added in so folks don't sit to long. The seminar runs from 9 AM - 5 PM both Saturday and Sunday, so you will be out in plenty of time to get to Fenway for the Saturday game.

Great questions; I've updated our Schedule page to answer them (along with Fris's reply):

Saberseminar schedules on Saturday and Sunday from 9AM to 5PM. We typically have an hour for lunch between 12PM and 1PM. The rest of the day, we schedule talks, Q&A sessions, product demos, and lectures by our fantastic list of speakers. You will be out in plenty of time to walk or catch the T down to Fenway Park for Saturday evening’s game.

We have an article on this fantastic event on the .com today. This is truly a great event for all baseball fans.

What began some years ago as a sabermetrics class in MIT’s Splash program led by Korb, David Gassko, and Sal Baxamusa, through the dedication, ingenuity, and passion of Korb and a gaggle of volunteer baseball aficionados has since developed into one of the premier places to learn the game of baseball as it is understood and played by professionals today. Past speakers have included Baltimore Orioles’, Boston Red Sox’ and Houston Astros’ General Managers Dan Duquette, Ben Cherington and Jeff Luhnow, Red Sox’ managers John Farrell and Bobby Valentine, MLB team Directors of Baseball Analytics Keith Woolner (Indians) and Tom Tippett (Red Sox), former MLB pitcher Brian Bannister, Red Sox scouts Jared Porter, Eddie Romero and Gus Quattlebaum, and many more including world renowned neuroscientists, physicists, sports medicine physicians, professional sabermetricians, professors and authors. This year’s lineup is no less distinguished. Indeed, despite the Seminar’s humble origins, it has attracted national attention from MLB teams looking for a leg up; the past two years has seen representation from 18 of 30 MLB teams with some going further still and sending participants. Top baseball research firms and popular websites both attend and participate as well. For this reason, the event has been covered by news organizations such as USA Today, ESPN, The Boston Globe and MLB.com.

I just spoke with Fris and they are going to continue to sell tickets past today's deadline because of increased demand. Lunch sales will be over later today.

Unless you are a reporter, you're not going to have a better chance to ask people from the front office questions. This will be the best $140 you will ever spend and all of the ticket proceeds go to The Jimmy Fund. Student tickets are $65.

I would love to be going but I'm stuck at a wedding - have fun everyone. Really interested to hear what Cherington has to say.

What an outstanding Day 1.  Major props to Fris, Jnai, and everyone else who made it happen.  And to Ben Cherington for showing up... the first question he got was basically "Hanley Ramirez. WTF?!?"

Anyone got a recap on some of the more interesting Qs and As? I really enjoyed this last year but couldn't make it this time around.

If you're a SoSH guy at the seminar and you don't come say hello tomorrow, you're dead to me, and you're banned from all future seminars...

Well, maybe not, maybe I'll just be really upset that I didn't get to meet you. So please come say hi.

I went last year and want to second what Chuck (Fris) said. He is one of the nicest and friendliest guys on the planet. I talked to him for a few minutes each day and had a great time. Only wish I could have made it thus year.
