For some further context: Denson isn't doing that well, with a .227 / .313 / .361 slash line this year between A and Rookie ball, so I don't know if he'll be the first openly gay player in the majors.

Good for him. Baseball may be one of the worst environments for this because of all the "old school" thinking that is still prevalent throughout the game, but i hope I'm overstating this effect.

Interesting timing given that Michael Sam just essentially retired on the same day

I thought tony gwynn Jr came out when he was still active.

Huh?

He's active now--well, on minor league DL. And, of course, he's never come out. Or, as far as I know, had a rumor about him.

Not in any way singling your post out as a critisicim, just as a jumping off point. I wonder if many people( myself included) have been unfair in our assumptions regarding how bad and unforgiving professional sports locker rooms and clubhouses would be for anyone coming out. I don't recall reading or hearing about any hazing/bullying incidents with Sam in his brief time spent in NFL locker rooms, and the very supportive comments by Denson's teammates quoted above also suggest a much more open atmosphere. Virtually every team sport is now populated entirely by players under 40, with the largest age range being under 30. I think there is pretty strong polling data(apologies for not citing, Mobil device issues) that shows a majority of people in those demographics to have pretty enlightened views on GLTG folks.Would stand to reason that would make its way into NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL clubhouse culture. No doubt threre are still plenty of pockets of idiocy out threre, but I hope/think we are well on the way to these becoming non stories. At any rate, good for Denson.

I guess not.  I honestly thought he had come out right around the time of his dad's death.....I guess my hamster fell off the wheel for little bit.
