We should do an "official" SoSH postseason award thread--not to replicate what the sportswriters will do, but to get it right.

Not that the Gold Gloves are the end-all or anything (they're clearly not), it is funny that last year there were so many questions about his defense that there was debate over whether he should stay at SS or move permanently to 3B.  Now he's a finalist for a defensive award at SS.  Amazing what hitting .300 for a whole season will do for you.

Good for Kiermaier. Well-deserved.
Indeed

ESPN Insider Scott Spratt reacts: "This season, Kiermaier not only led all center fielders with his 42 Defensive Runs Saves, but he set the record for most DRS in a season by any player at any position since we at Baseball Info Solutions started tracking the stat in 2003."

Yeah. He's really, really good in the field. Had a bunch of spectacular plays this year....great catches and great throws....and very consistently gets good reads/jumps and makes many difficult plays look routine.

OK, I'll ask. Is Kiermaier better than JBJ?
Kiermaier did it all season long, and did it very well. I'd say he's the real deal, along with JBJ's second half. Going forward I couldn't say, but for this year I'd say Kiermaier won it on merit, and it's a nice change after Adam Jones has been winning it with his offense.

All the stats say yes. In his first season as a full-time CF he had the best season on record as a CF by both DRS and UZR. I'm not necessarily the biggest believer in the accuracy of current defensive metrics, but when they all agree and you're at the extreme high end and that comports with the eye test, well, that's pretty good.

Kiermaier won out over Pillar and Trout in the CF balloting -- which, given the recent Adam Jones love Sprowl referenced -- means that people were paying attention, at least for this prime position.

The entire NL infield did
I hadn't seen all the Sluggers together when I posted. How common is it that players bag the pair?

I know we joke about Jeter-type offense first players winning gold gloves on the basis of their name recognition, but Crawford is a legitimately very good SS.
