Probably a separate thread, but Brady is a lock to be on the team next year.  Gronk is not.

Gronk is a lock to be here next year. The second option kicks in at the end of the 2015 football season, and they lose a ton of money cutting or trading him next year.

After 2015, they'll very likely sign the extension, provided he isn't immobile at that point, as the 2016-17 seasons are quite reasonable and he's quite cuttable after that.

No they don't lose a ton of money by cutting him or trading him this offseason.

I dont think they're going down that path, Gronk is reverting to form, but he's not a lock to be on the team due to the salary cap, and if god forbid he tears another knee or something next week he's not a lock to be here.

What am I missing? They lose an extra 4.7 mlilion cutting him before June 2, and save nothing cutting him after.

I broke this down it detail during the offseason, but what you are missing is that the contract structure is funky and Miguel doesn't add extra Gronk columns for option picked up/option not picked up.  So the numbers listed are based on the '15 option being exercised.  Once that happens, Gronk is uncuttable.

My bold for emphasis below, but my understanding is that if they cut Gronk this offseason they'd be on the hook for $1.65MM-$1.9MM (not sure how the workout bonus is treated) of dead money (see the spreadsheet at the link) as the option would simply not exist.

Hopefully academic.

uly 9, 2013 update ProFootballTalk.Com's Mike Florio blogged that Gronk's extension included "an $8 million signing bonus, a fully-guaranteed 2012 base salary of $540,000, a fully-guaranteed 2013 base salary of $630,000, and a fully-guaranteed base salary of $3.75 million in 2014. He also has workout bonuses of $30,000 in 2012 and 2013, and a guaranteed workout bonus of $250,000 in 2014. His $4.75 million base salary and $250,000 workout bonus for 2015 are guaranteed for injury prior to end of 2014 league year, then guaranteed fully. The guarantee on signing is $13.17 million, and another $5 million is guaranteed for injury." On June 12, 2012 the Boston Globe's Greg Bedard reported that the extension is the richest for a tight end at six years and $54 million. The final $37 million is contingent on the Patriots picking up a $10 million club option by the final day of the 2015 league year (Feb. 28, 2016). If the Patriots pass on the option, the team can?t place the franchise tag on him. Including the first two years at his rookie salaries, the total deal is eight years at $55.23 million ($6.9 million average). With the team option, it?s basically two four-year contracts: $18.23 million ($4.557 million average) through ?15; and then $37 million ($9.25 million average) from 2016-19....Gronkowski is guaranteed to make $12 million. Another $5 million in 2015 is guaranteed against injury, and then if he?s on the roster on the fifth day of the 2015 league year. The deal also includes per-game active roster bonuses totaling $500,000 in 2016 and 2017 ($31,250 per game), and $750,000 ($46,875 per game) in 2018-19....Gronkowski?s salary cap numbers from 2012-19 are: $2.66 million, $2.75 million, $5.4 million, $8.65 million, $6.65 million, $7 million, $11 million, and $12 million."

I see, so those numbers are assuming the option is exercised before the 2015 season, which doesn't make sense as they have until February 2016 to actually make that decision. I think those numbers should be adjusted and placed into the 2016 chart. Either way, looks like they'd still only save a couple million cutting him next year, which basically seems like a lock he'll be here. After that, it gets interesting, though it's likely to be exercised if he's healthy.

There is a cap hit in '15 for picking up the option, so there's no real good way to show a single number for '15.
