Hot and Not Hot Cs Takes...Will They Age Well?

Having thought a lot about this Cs team before the season started and watched that gutty, if not somewhat ugly, win over the pesky Knicks, I offer the following thoughts. I'm both interested in how others perceive them and how they will age as the season progresses.

1. Guard Defense. With all respect to Marcus Smart's defense, the combination of Holliday and White just could be the best Celtics' defensive guard duo that I've ever seen, and the best in the NBA this season. I honestly do not recall any pair that looked as stifling as these two did last night and promise to look like given their pasts. Obviously, Smart and White were of similar ilk, but Brogdon was like a third starter with regard to playing time, which meant less time together for Smart and White than I anticipate for the current two.

2. Elite 6; Brown. Along the lines of what I mentioned in the Opening Night Game Thread, the top 6 is so good, and so deep, that it's arguable that the highest paid player in the NBA is the 5th most important guy on this team. Yes, I KNOW. It was one night. There will be nights when Brown carries them. But if you had to lose one player to injury, and I gave you the choice, would you choose any of Tatum, Porzingis, Holliday or White instead of Brown? Yep, it's not really a fair question because they play different positions and fulfill different roles. And yes, that they are so deep through 6 is why we have the luxury of asking such a question.

3. Egos. One of the reasons why the 2007-8 team was so remarkable was that the big 3 all sublimated their egos as necessary and seemingly ignored personal numbers. Or did so enough. I think one of the biggest unknowns is whether this team will be able to do the same. Will players have a "I need to get mine" aspect? There were a few times last night when it seemed like that happened. And the ball movement was not always great. Of course, that could be down to it being the first game and these guys not really having much chemistry so far. But there's a reason why Doc Rivers and Phil Jackson got so much credit for blending teams full of stars. Will these players buy in? Can Joe push their buttons as needed? My strong sense is that they will. Other than White, whose play says he gets the team concept as much as anyone, they all are in a very good place financially and contract wise. And all are saying all the right things. But this is still not an area that can be taken for granted and whether they can focus on Ws and not their own numbers is going to be a huge swing factor in the outcome.

4. Bench. Does anyone think that 7-9 is going to remain Hauser, Kornet and Pritchard for very long? Hauser will not go scoreless very often and has the capacity to pump in buckets. Pritchard too. But the bench has to contribute more or the top 6 will wear down, they very likely will, there will very likely be an addition or two over the course of the year, one ore more of the DNPs from last night are going to contribute and the only one I am confident will be in the rotation come April is Pritchard.

5. Porzingis. Nothing about last night really surprised me. But damn he's fun to watch. Between the blocks, unusual combo and agility and height, and outside shooting (including the line drive-ish trajectory of his shots), it really is true that we have not seen many guys like him. And I don't recall seeing him smile as much when he was a visitor.

6. Team D. I think there is reason to be optimistic that this team will play very good team defense this year. Yes, the Knicks missed a ton of shots last night. Many makable ones. But it's also true that the Cs looked to be swarming and all over the NYers in a way that reminded me of the defense that the Cs played during the Udoka year. None of the "starting six" are guys who get picked on often. It's tempting to look toward Al, given his age, among other things, but that would be a stretch in my view.

7. Hero Ball. Along the lines of point 3, it's going to be very important that the ball not stagnate and the offense not reduce into a series of "hero ball" moments. That happened at times last year and the prior season, it's very common as a whole in the NBA, and both Tatum and Brown seem at times to decide that it's time to score by themselves. Make no mistake, being able to create your own offense is often necessary. But I hope they will be a team that works for the best shot, no matter who has done what so far in the game, and that they will not settle for a series of one on ones. I think they will in fact not do either excessively, but to me it will be one of the keys of the season.

8. Tatum. Is he still improving? It's impossible to know off one game, of course. He looked very smooth, strong and confident last night. But then again, he did last year so much of the time. I don't know if he has to be better than last year in order for them to win a title, as some have suggested. For me, this is a two-fer. Will he be better? And does he need to be? I tend to think that he doesn't need to be given the talent around him. But it would be nice!

9. Smart's Leadership. I think this is one of the most overrated topics. Meaning I am not worried about it I think the players on this team will fill in the gaps, as needed. And we all know that Marcus took some shots and did some things that made us crazy. But many have said it's an issue. I' don't see it.

10. Joe. The Coach's use of TOs and his penchant for using players in a very uneven way (going from being benched to playing huge minutes to being mostly benched) were two huge issues in my book. The heavy reliance on 3s was another. How Mazzulla matures, and whether having HIS assistants will make him more able to excel, will be big issues. I have no real reason to learn positively other than trust in Brad's instincts, which I have. And I guess the fact that he has a year under his belt in the top spot. Here's hoping.

1. Very bullish on the backcourt defense.
2. Porzingis ahead of Brown. I'd put Brown on the same level as White and Holiday in terms of who I'd be willing to do without.
3. Everything I've heard is very positive, guys are more than willing to put egos aside for wins.
4. I think Joe will (and should) run a number of different bench combos. Mykhailuk, Brisset and Stevens all should get some run, and I'll admit to being Queta curious.
5. Zingsanity!
6. Al's still a great defender too.
7. My biggest concern. Last night did nothing to appease it, the ball movement was pretty bad.
8. I'd love to see Tatum average 26/10/7. He does that and we get 18.
9. Marcus who? I kid, but I think this team is full of leaders. Holiday a great add in that department.
10. I'm not too concerned with Joe. Oddly enough the ball movement concern is one thing they came out of the gate last year doing really well, I'm assuming that was Joe's influence. Unfortunately they didn't maintain it well enough into the playoffs, so he needs to get to work on that.

Great thread.

I'm concerned about the defensive rebounding when Tatum is on the bench. We don't have a lot of space-eaters who can keep big, athletic guys off of the glass. Will be interesting to see how we fare against Milwaukee and Cleveland on that front.

I don't think I'll ever like this coach.
Kornet is bad and Hauser is not much better. Are their replacements already on the team (Queta and Walsh) or do they have to go get upgrades? I hope they stay aggressive on this front because it's pretty glaring. Knicks were deeper last night for sure.
Otherwise, as long as they stay healthy I like this team.

My biggest HOT take is Stevens or Queta instead of Kornet.

Both Lamar/Q have more upside and let's see if either can blossom as that feisty defensive role player

I am confident the Cs three pointers will fall at a better rate than last night, but a concern of mine was watching our guards be TOO good at dropping on help defense and leaving Knicks shooters open for higher percentage attempts. My hope is this was team-specific and their scouting indicated the Knicks were most dangerous when their inside offense is flourishing. Against smaller ball teams, it would behoove them just to let Kristaps or Al go one on one with the fellow big in the post.

Edit: But holding them to 32% shooting from 2-point range is mighty good.

My hot take is that Brad is not done tweaking the roster. Honestly, I'd like to see them keep the bench somewhat as is for continuity reasons, unless someone obvious appears. But I wouldn't be surprised if Brad is burning up phone lines still.

I'll comment on the first 2 because they stand out the most

1. The guard defense will be very good..don't think this is remotely a hot take.
2. This is a massive hot take. I love Derrick White. I was one of the people clamoring for him to play more last year. I would much rather lose him and Holiday than Brown. In terms of importance, I can definitely see Porzingis being ahead of Brown but those are the top 3 by a decent amount IMO

My Takez:
- I'm still not fully on board with Coach Joe even though I would like to be
-At the start of the season the biggest board warz will be Kornet and Brown. Kornet will be moved off of the list because Brad will trade for someone to be a 3rd big before the deadline. Brown will be #1 all season.
-Eventually, multiple people on the board will turn on Holiday's offensive game. He will become Smart-lite in the sense that people will shit on him and then people will take umbrage and stick up for him.
-I don't think this offense features nearly the amount of movement and quick decision making that some people do. I think the only two players that qualify as quick decision makers with a lot of off-ball activity are Holiday and White.
-Jordan Walsh will get playing time in meaningless games and blowouts. He will inevitably become multiple people's binky while multiple people say he sucks and will be playing in Europe within 5 years

Time comes for Al faster than we expected. He tries to cover the loss of athleticism with high energy minutes so it takes a while to notice. This becomes evident first defensively, where his ability to work in a team is further impacted because he’s working with an unpredictable and less cohesive mix of bench/starters based on matchups. Not sure I buy this, but that’s what hot takes are for right?

Unless, of course, they win it this year.
This right here is where I get where you’re coming from lol.

Celtics are the overwhelming favorites, we’re one game into the season, and there’s people talking about trading Jaylen if we don’t win a title? Fuck that, we’re winning it.

I mean.. this is already happening it seems based on the game thread.

Could maybe agree if it's for money reasons and getting the most value for him.

Luke Kornet will receive some serious and much unserious criticism all season. However those who are serious will be influenced by the unserious to a point where people are legitimately concerned about his usage/roster spot.

Like if it isn't addressed Kornet will effectively contest this team's chances at another banner.

Kornet will receive unmitigated criticism, until Queta starts getting minutes and then the nostalgia for Luke shall be strong.

Barring a Tatum or Pozgingis injury (knock on wood), in a vacuum this team probably is better off trading Jaylen's quarter for a couple dimes. But that doesn't mean they can't win it all as currently constructed. Hopefully this roster wins it all, I'd love for the Jays to figure out a way to do it together.

Unfortunately, Jaylen's skillset is fairly one dimensional, and not particularly conducive to being a 3rd or 4th wheel. If things don't work out this season, I have been assured Jaylen on this contract will fetch a nice package of players and picks.

If it comes to that, let's hope everyone is right.

I mean.. Jaylen's skillset seems ideal for this team. If they set back picks for him he's going to be able to cut to the basket and get a bunch of points going to the rim if KP and Tatum both take their man out past the three point line.. It's only been one game.. and KP got no assists in the first game.. but his highlight reel is full of passes to players cutting to the basket.

I know the current narrative is to be down on JB, but I think he's very important to this team. He had a down year last year in the playoffs.. but people are forgetting how he carried the team in the fourth quarter quite a bit in the playoffs in years past. He failed in game 6 of the ECF last year.. but I imagine it's really hard to change a game plan after the best player on your team gets hurt in the first minute as opposed to before the game... or even well into it.

edit: I mean.. just look at his regular season numbers from last year. Celts are trading that for two nickels? Or that's one dimensional? What proof do we have that any of your second paragraph is true? or deserves the 'i've been assured' as if Jaylen isn't though of highly in the NBA?

I’m not making a particularly nuanced or controversial argument.

Jaylen isn’t very good at passing, ballhanding, or defense, but he is a very good isolation high volume scorer. While that’s a nice strength to have, it loses a bit of value when the rest of the team is so good.

Overall, Jaylen is still a very good and valuable player. Time will tell how he fits in with the rest of this years roster.

I’m not saying they should trade him now by any means, but if things don’t work out he’s clearly the logical guy to move on from.

This roster (if healthy) plus an above average 3 and D guy and another rotation big might flow better than the current version with Jaylen and a thin bench.

Zinger averages less than 2 assist per game for his career. Don’t be surprised to see a few assist-less games from him. He’s had about a dozen over the last 2 years.

Yes, Jaylen Brown at $31M fits perfectly and is a huge luxury to have as your 2nd-4th best player.

Jaylen Brown at 35% of the cap is redundant because he forces you to make downgrades elsewhere, so I think he'll be gone in 2024 or 2025. Hopefully he's the best version of himself until then, both to win a title and maximize his trade value.

KP is the key to the season. If he stays healthy, his defensive impact will be as big as his offensive. He's obviously nothing like Rob, but on defense he is a presence back there defending the rim. Beyond his 4 blocks on opening night, he also altered a ton of drives and shots.

The biggest risk to the season is JM once against getting caught up in the game-to-game and leaning too heavile on the top players, especially KP.

There is a part of me that wants to see Nice Guy Brad (& Zarren) work their trade magic again next summer (Bridges+, Bane+, etc probably change my mind) BUT Jaylen Brown is the NBA's greatest hedge against Tatum/KP injury risk for the next 3 seasons.

If Brad is going to use Jaylen's salary to add 2 players that add up to his 35%, Wyc will still be a taxpayer. We need to invoke a "Not My Money" entitled fan stance for the next 6 seasons. The Celtics can own New England for the next half-decade. PLUS Wyc spent years collecting from the Warriors' taxpayer pool and the Celtics have made him a billionaire.

The C's have until Feb. 9 (trade deadline) to develop an "above average 3 and D guy and another rotation big". Those two players may reside on the roster.

Ego & $$$ are always an issue for players that don't get their POINTZ, but every one of the TOP6 has been paid.
RINGZ are sport's #1 status symbol. Hopefully having Pierce, KG, Rondo, House, Scal, etc around can impart that UBUNTU vibe.

Taking this seriously, I think Kristaps establishes himself as the team’s de facto second best player. That’s not a slight to Jaylen, whose issues in the offense will be ameliorated somewhat by mixing him in with some different lineups and getting more transition opportunities.

However, Porzingis will still be the second best guy. The fit with Tatum is just that good.

It's also not just fit with Tatum: he's gotten way stronger, better defensively, and really improved his post game a ton since Dallas. He was one of the most promising young players early in his career, and now he's realizing that promise in his prime.

Yeah. I don't think that this is a hot take at all. For all of the talk in other threads about trying to figure out who has to fit in and mold their game to help the team (not just Jaylen), I think that the presence of other high-end players will absolutely unlock both KP and JT. Just the simple fact of not having such a scoring burden on them will help. It's going to be harder to throw 2-3 guys at either guy since when he swings it, it's to someone who knows how to punish defenses...every time. Go ahead and double Tatum, and he swings it to KP/JB/DW/JH to attack a rotating defense. Same if you try to trap KP. Way easier to make the right basketball play when every outlet is someone dangerous. Frankly I expect Jaylen's passing to improve too, but I might be on an island on that one.

I don't even have a hot take. I'm just really excited to watch this team learn to play with one another. If they can figure that out, they're going to be incredibly hard to beat. The KP/Tatum pick and roll is going to be deadly. KP's ability to knock down 3's from 3 feet behind the line is going to create so much room for everyone else. Derrick White, Jrue and JB are going to have open looks all year.

Alright fine, hot take: KP for defensive player of the year (please stay healthy)

I think Hauser is going to settle in and be good in his role. He needs the game to slow down for him and he needs minutes for that to happen. I don’t feel the same about Kornet and I don’t know what to think about Pritchard. Most likely Pritchard can be good against the awful teams but struggle against most. I thought he turned a corner in the preseason but was back to last year’s Pritchard game 1.

Guard defense is elite.

Brown's game is probably the one that is going to have to change the most to fit in with this new mix of players. He may be the second best scorer on the team but he's no longer the #2. The KP/JT two-man game is just too good. JB needs to study Rip Hamilton and the art off ball movement.

Egos don't seem to be a problem. Thankfully, Brown got paid in the offseason because if he was up for it this year I could see that being a problem and him seemingly becoming the third option.

Hauser has to make open looks or he sits, there are too many other options behind him. Kornet will have a longer leash, but I don't see him winning the 3rd big job. In fact, I think the 3rd big is someone who is not on the roster yet. Pritchard will be the 3rd ball handler, but Coach Sam needs to get him to stop over penetrating.

KP is a perfect addition to this team. I expected him to fit in well, but the reality has been even better than my expectations. We haven't had this type of two man game since Al and IT3.

Team D is fine. They will figure it out, well, they have the pieces to at least.

Hero ball is going to happen throughout 82 games. What I want them to do is get into their sets earlier and with more conviction. They waste too much clock with lack of intention.

Tatum is a beast and he looks even stronger this year. That thing he did where he stepped through a triple team and then finished at the rim was the chefs kiss.

I love Marcus. I'm going to miss Marcus. The guy was my spirit animal. However, there are a lot of things about Marcus that are frustrating and it seemed a lot of those traits wore off on his teammates. I won't miss that. Team has plenty of veteran leadership.

CJM gets a mulligan for last year being thrown into the job in training camp, having to deal with the fall out from Ime, and doing all of it with what was left of Ime's staff. There is now stability and he has a good, veteran coaching staff around him. Joe will either show up or the C's will be looking for a new coach in the offseason. Pretty simple calculus, IMO.

If Tatum isn’t the Celtics MVP come playoff time, Celtics aren’t winning a title.
Agreed. I also think that the bloom will wear off of the rose on Jrue's offensive capabilities by the All-Star Break (at least among the posters on the board). He's an incredible 4th-5th option but I am seeing a lot of very unrealistic expectations about his offense recently.

Yup, I remember mentioning here last winter that it seemed like Jrue was putting up huge numbers when Giannis was in and out of the lineup, but at the end of the day he was still at the same 18-19 ppg he's been for basically his entire prime. I suspect he'll be closer to 13-14 in this offense (as the clear #4 option), which is more than fine as long as he's reasonably efficient.

Since this is for Hot Takes, here are some concerns after 2 games:

1. KP. His offense looks legit - after a slow first half agaisnt the Heat, he looked much more like himself in the second half. But the great rim defense he played in game 1 was mostly not seen in the second game. Bam got the better of him early, and it seemed like the Heat had a brief spell of getting what they wanted at the rim for a bit. KP also picked up 2 early fouls and ultimately fouled out. And he also seems, after 2 games, to have a penchant for picking up dumb technicals, as he has one of those in each game (not counting the flop in game 1). None of this changes my view of him as an offensive player (after a bad start he finished shooting 50% from the field and scoring 17 points), but I'm walking back my optimism about his defense a bit. We need to see more.

2. Leaning too heavily on the starters. JT played 39 minutes in game 1, 41 in game 2. KP and his 7'3" size and career of health issues played 38 minutes in game 1 and 30 before fouling out in game 2. Based on what Mazzulla did last year (and has yet to do any differently this year), I'm concerned that he's going to lean too heavily on the top players and then have them not in peak for come playoff time. It's only 2 games in, this is in many ways a new team with a new coaching staff, Mazzulla has nearly a full season to show that I'm wrong about this. But he hasn't yet.

3. Related to #2, Mazzulla has to develop a playable, contributing bench. Boston's bench scored 12 points in game 1 and 8 in game 2. That's not enough. There have been some good moments. Horford hit a couple of key threes late in the third of game 1, Brissett gave the Celtics a key, momentum-changing lift in the first quarter of game 2. But on the whole the bench is not adding enough. Mazzulla has to figure that out. It might be that early foul trouble in both games has derailed some of his rotation plans. White pciked up 2 quick fouls in game 1, Porzingis in game 2.

On 2 and 3, also worth pointing out that these first two games were against a 2nd round playoff team and a conference champ from last year. I imagine it will get tapered back when they blow out some lower tier teams.

That said, Bam and Butler have both been at 35 or under in the Heat's first two games despite game 1 being a 1 point win and game 2 being tight in the 4th.

Zinger will be All-NBA this year if he can manage 70 games. Career highs in PPG, efficiency stats and blocks.
I don't think any of the top 6 are going to have career highs in PPG and I hope they are okay with it. Because there is so much offensive talent, everyone is going to have to take a backseat to the hot hand once in a while.
