Florio is pissing on this one as well:

McClellin, a first-round pick in 2012 and once believed to be on track to become the next great Bears linebacker, was a disappointment in four seasons in Chicago. He had only 7.5 sacks in four total seasons, and his most memorable moment arguably came when he dragged quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the ground and broke his collarbone in 2013.
Good take by Howe here tho: http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/patriots/the_blitz/2016/03/report_patriots_sign_shea_mcclellin_to_three_year_contract

Supposedly is able to play all over the place, possible Chris Long insurance as well.
Chris Long outweighs McClellin by 25+ pounds. McClellan was switched to LB in for 2015 and not sure if he can ever go back. Speaking of, here's a nice breakdown on SM playing heads up ball as an ILB:

D&C just had a media guy from Chicago on who flat said that McClellin can't play in the NFL. Says he's a nice guy, he works hard but he just doesn't have the ability and physical skills to play at this level.

Maybe BB sees him as the next larry Izzo.

Do the Pats still have Jon Bostic? I know he didn't get a ton of playing time last year but he supposedly is another fmr Bear with a ton of talent -- and I wonder whether he was redshirted as he got up to speed w the Pats' defense.

Do you know who it was?
I think most people will agree that as a general rule traditional media members should no longer be considered or regarded as experts when it comes to football. If this guy works at a newspaper or radio station then there is a really good chance that his opinion is meaningless on this subject.

I didn't catch who it was, some sort of online publication guy based out of Chicago. I just thought it was an interesting and strong statement by a guy who has seen him play quite a bit.
Take it for what it is worth, maybe nothing.

Akeem Ayers, and Akiem Hicks were benched and supposedly couldn't play until they got to NE. BB will do what he always does, find something this guy can do and let him do it, or cut him and replace him with someone cheaper and better.

IIRC ElCap's secret Patriots source said that they loved, loved, loved Shea in 2012. I'm pretty bullish on this move. It'll be interesting to see what weight he plays at --- he's gone up and down a few times in his career.

Sorry for the sidetrack, but I remember being at a Sox game at Fenway back in 2001 or so, and this super obnoxious Yankee fan who was at the game by himself kept yelling "Shea is a girl's name." This guy was a loser and obviously friendless. Just yelling it over and over again. He wasn't funny. He wasn't clever. He was just annoying and loud.

He was sitting in the same row as a family of Yankee fans that included some teenage girls and a mother and father but he wasn't attending the game with them. He just happened to be sitting in the same row as them, but I am pretty sure the father's presence was the only reason things didn't get ugly.

Sounds like a poor man's Bruschi to me. Tweener, former DE, works hard, smart but small and not athletic enough. Here was his draft profile from NFL.com:
STRENGTHS McClellin is a strong player inside for the Broncos who uses good leverage to get under heavier offensive linemen and jolt them back in their stance. He is aggressive, stout, and can hold off linemen and smother tight ends at the point of attack. He has no problem tackling and is a good pass rusher.

WEAKNESSES McClellin will have a tough time convincing teams, even though he has been productive, to take a shot on him early in the draft because of his size. He has displayed enough athletic ability for teams to consider him at outside backer, but he could stand to lose weight as he enters the next level.
They had him as a fifth-rounder.

I'm thinking his versatility between the mike, sam, and DE positions is driving this signing. Utilizing a guy like that gives us tremendous flexibility down to down if the opposing team is trying to get creative with personnel and shifts. Does anyone know if he can run with a tight end, like an average one for instance?

FWIW, he had the 2nd best 40 yard time in the 2012 combine, right between #1 Bruce Irvin and #3 Nick Perry: http://www.nfl.com/combine/top-performers#year=2012&workout=FORTY_YARD_DASH&position=DL

#6 in 3 cone drill: http://www.nfl.com/combine/top-performers#year=2012&workout=THREE_CONE_DRILL&position=DL

#12 in 20 yard shuttle: http://www.nfl.com/combine/top-performers#year=2012&workout=TWENTY_YARD_SHUTTLE&position=DL

Edit: Jake Bequette also had an awesome combine, so there's that.

I'm a big an of McClellin so I think this is great signing. I know he hasn't lived up to the hype he had coming out of college but I can see him becoming a Nink/Vrabel type of player in this system. BB and Patricia should be able to utilize his versatility with him being able to play inside and outside. Psyched to see what he can do here.

I hope that is the case---however, he's giving up a bunch of size to both those guys. Perhaps Pats think he should bulk back up---will be interesting to see, this is a larger bet than I expected on him so they must have a theory here.

Yeah, but he's white, so they have a lot in common.

I thought I saw something about him being 6'3" 260 which would have put him around the same size as the two (Nink - 6'2" 260/Vrabel 6'3" 261... ) It must have been when he tried to play DE. Looks like he played around 245 last year. My bad. I actually think he plays better lighter. I wouldn't want to see him try to bulk up again.

1. It really does matter WHO the media guy is. For example, in this case, I'd (personally) be looking through his archive to see other past "calls" like this that either show an actual knowledge or a known level of bullshit.

2. Scheme fit. The NFL is all about scheme fit. I have no idea if McClellin is a good fit in an OLB/ILB role with the Pats in 2016, but I am fucking positive the team knows better than an unnamed dipshit getting paid to opine on the D&C show. Heck, Gerry won't even argue this point and he'll argue the sun rises in the east.
