The concept makes complete sense, but even if Boston's pick was the only one offered for any bottom roster player, it's crazy to do this deal with probably your biggest rival who is also you're biggest roadblock in the window you are talking about. It's a low chance, but if he turns into a useful bench piece, let alone gets his shot right, it'll look terrible. I also get clearing up cap space, but if I were in his position I'd rather add a 2nd to Springer to send him somewhere else than get a 2nd from the C's.
I think Springers potential of coming back to bite Philly is being vastly overrated in this thread.

From what he's shown as a player so far, he's a good perimeter defender, too small to guard wings, while being a near zero on offense.
So if he's not a ball handler, so far can't shoot, is small to be a screener, can only guard other guards, what's his likelihood of being someone Philly regrets moving on from? It's gotta be really small. He's basically going to have to develop into a really good outside shooter to even be in a rotation. I think it's much more likely his contract is viewed as a negative asset by Boston because of the tax by next years trade deadline than a regret for Philly. He's fine as a lottery ticket at a small cost, but he's not more that that. To think Philly would've been better off giving up a 2nd to send him elsewhere than taking a second from Boston is wild.

Can someone who knows the CBA better tell me: When can the Celtics extend Springer, and for how much / how long?

I ask because I imagine the plan is to put him on the Grant Williams / Sam Hauser plan, chain him to Drew Hanlen for a bit, invest in him, and if it works out they'll want some years at below his now-improved market value before he cashes in, 3-4 years from now.
He's signed for next year at 4M. He's an RFA the following summer if they qualify him. If they wanted to, they could extend him for up to the max this summer.

Queta(24) & Springer, had 2+ seasons of professional experience before Brad added them. Much higher floors & chance of helping the Celtics now.

That seems different than drafting Walsh/JDD in the 2nd round, a year removed from HS.
I wasn’t aware that Springer, like Walsh and JDD, was a 5-star prospect and a top 16/17 recruit in his class. He also apparently performed very well at the combine with a top 5 score on the vertical leap.

This article - https://www.libertyballers.com/platform/amp/2023/10/23/23926210/jaden-springer-film-study-philadelphia-76ers-basketball - from October 2023 suggests that JS may be big enough and strong enough to guard wings.

There's a few amazing defensive clips of him.

Agree that he's more likely to end up in Europe than be a productive rotation player but one can dream. :)

Thanks for posting. He had some decent defensive outings recently

14th player on the Celtic roster, 21-year-old with 2+ years of pro experience, on a rookie contract, & controllable. He'll cost $2MM more than a minimum guy next year.

Morey is Captaining a sinking ship at the moment, so saving your owners a few shekels probably isn't a bad idea.

Morey will give the same "success" assessment when he trades Embiid to the NYK for a haul. How many guys give you something AND return this much? I'm kidding, but these guys are never going to come out and say, yeah, you're right, that move was kind of suspect. They make it because they're convinced it was right and the criteria are subjective.

Honestly just looks a lot like ownership told him to get under the tax given the Embiid situation.

Yeah, I don't know man.

Even in the highlight clips of him, I'm not going to claim I'm breaking down film of him, he looks way too small to be guarding wings.

He was measured a 6'3" at the combine, with standard reach/wingspan.

If you're putting that size on a wing in this league, that guy is getting steamrolled unless he's a Marcus/Jrue style tank. Those guys are really rare. Strikes me as unlikely the Celtics just managed to have three of them within a year.

Nice read from the Athletic
How Brad Stevens took advantage of Sixers’ dilemma to complete Celtics roster

Nobody entering the season could fill in confidently if Porziņģis or Al Horford got hurt in the postseason, but still be young enough to replace Horford when he retires soon.

Enter Tillman.

There was nobody who could bring the defensive intensity of Pritchard with the size to guard star wings.

Enter Springer.
Ever since Stevens saw Springer look like a disruptive defender in their preseason meeting earlier this season, he was keeping tabs on his new young wing, hoping the Sixers would need to cast him aside to maintain financial flexibility. Stevens was happy to take that on because the second apron is taking all of his flexibility away. Boston had to bring guys in now because making trades and signing free agents is going to slow to a trickle this summer.

Springer listed as 6'4/204. Jrue is 6'4/205.

Jrue is a lot heavier than 205, probably 220 or so. Aside from that, though, Holiday and Springer are virtually identical in terms of height/length (Jrue is a quarter inch taller and has an inch in standing reach).

The optimist says….

“Do you remember how out of place Avery Bradley looked offensively when he stepped on an NBA floor his first year?”

The pessimist says….

“Springer is in his 3rd year and still looks that way.”

Avery is exactly what I thought when watching his on ball highlights. I don't remember much of his early offense besides his back cuts. Long shot to develop averys marksmanship, but he doesn't need to be able to hit above the break to be useful - if he can be respectable from the corner its a win... this season having his optionality in machups will be nice

Then again Isaiah Joe spent over 2yrs with the 76ers & was surprisingly cast aside last year to open up a roster spot

We’re not going to have playing time for everyone. So sometimes, we’re going to cut players who are very good players. And we’re happy for those that go on to do great things,” Morey said when asked about cutting Joe last fall. “There’s a lot of factors that go into it, including the current contract or the goals of the season to win a title. We could start bringing in worse players so we never cut a good one.” - Daryl Morey

Hey Springer has an elite NBA skill….that’s not nothing. Many times a young player simply needs a change of scenery for things to click. I don’t hate the play with so little risk….I was hoping for something to help a little more this season.

The optimist points out that Bradley wasn't exactly a sharpshooter by year 3 (he shot just .402 from the field and .317 from 3 his 3rd year), but even if that might be Springer's reasonable ceiling, he's not going to get nearly enough minutes to prove it or work to it. Bradley barely played his 1st year, but he still played more minutes in year 1 than Springer did in his first two years combined (162 to 95), and by year 3 Bradley was a rotation regular, playing 1368 minutes (Springer has just 377 minutes this year).

Springer won't be getting too many minutes the rest of the year, and if Holiday is extended/re-signed, he won't see much time next year either. If he's the 4th best small guard on a title team (with the 3rd highest ceiling), that's just the way it's gonna be.

Tillman is him.

For #13-15 (& 2-ways) get rookie/min. contract players with 1 elite skill, + upside/control, that have NBA bodies.
FWIW I'm more bullish on Springer than JDD or Walsh.

ALSO If Jaden ever sees the floor this season, other than garbage time, he will always be the #5 offensive option

If you look at what other teams ended up with, there just wasn't much to choose from, at all. Tillman was one of the better guys to move (assuming you believe in his offense improving when playing with non G-Leaguers).

I like Springer, but I’m more bullish on Walsh. Springer’s upside is useful regular season guy. Walsh actually has the basics of a rotation player. Now whether or not he ever gets there God only knows. I’m hopeful that JT drags both guys with him this summer.

Jared Weiss in the Atlantic noted that by trading Springer, the Sixers offseason cap number will be low enough to use the full MLE next year. So that was their motivation, along with picking up a second - which in the past year or so has come to have trade value.

I think it is right to be more bullish on Walsh, who I would say is a higher ceiling, lower floor guy. But I would not discount the potential for Springer to contribute in the playoffs. He's clearly a "D" guy (as opposed to a "3&D" guy), but if he can effectively guard the likes of Curry and Doncic, then maybe he's a good deep bench guy to have in the playoffs - not a guy you plan to play, but someone who can bring one useful skill in a pinch.

Plus PHI has room to sign a couple of buyout guys, which I'm sure they think they need.

And, as we've seen so many times with the Heat, you don't need all these guys to hit. Even 1-2 panning out and developing makes a big difference, particularly when you can re-sign them.

Agreed, it was a $$$ move, just like Daryl cutting Isaiah Joe last season to trim the roster to 14.
Daryl can go get Lowry for that role.

Having NBA strength, quickness & already being an elite NBA point-of-attack defender by 21 is unique. Jaden has been on an actual NBA floor and bottled up Steph/Luka

Hitting somewhat open Catch & Shoot Corner3s is one of the easier NBA skills to learn if you hit FTs at 81%.
He also hit 43% of 3s & 81% of his FTs at Tenn (SSS alert on all of his NBA/NCAA numbers)...BUT he'll need to put in the work.

Funny enough, Springer is only 6 months older than the Thompson Twins, which is music to my ears.

Yeah, the Joe example is highly relevant, because it's an example of Morey being brutally wrong in the recent past (at a position of need for the Sixers). At least he got a sorta ok 2nd for Springer this time.

The MLE thing sounds like cope to me: they easily could have moved Springer in the summer, if the right guy came free.

This really, really looks like Philly ducking the tax, but they don't want to say that's what it is. Which is fine! The Celtics ducked it in 2021 at the deadline, and it was probably the right move.

Anybody heard when Springer will be ready for active duty?
Our next blowout. ;)

All kidding aside, he's required to report for tomorrows game. i'm not sure if he was with the team in Miami but with it being a road game, in and out of the city, I'd guess that he wasn't especially since he wasn't obligated to be. He's not injured so he should be there Tuesday and many coaches like to throw a guy into the mix right away to engage them with the team....will be interesting to see if he gets a couple 1H minutes in either of these two Brooklyn games considering they are on consecutive nights.

JS has been inactive with ankle impingement for the last two games so he's reported.

BTW, when asked about Morey's comments, he apparently said that he doesn't care about them as he's a Celtic now. https://www.si.com/nba/celtics/news/jaden-springer-responds-to-daryl-moreys-comments-about-his-value
