If so that’s another he didn’t take.Is there a vaccine for hustling?
In the middle of the inning. He should have been benched right after
I honestly wouldn't have objected. In the middle of the inning.
I would still do it. I’d rather play Vazquez in the OF than a guy who won’t put in the bare minimum of effort.Kind of hard to send a guy down when you don’t have any available OF on the 40-man to call up.
Bradley to CF, a pitcher to LF. It’s better than this clown.Kind of hard to send a guy down when you don’t have any available OF on the 40-man to call up.
And yet he's still in the game...I’d cut him tonight. He’s shown no effort to help the team with his insane vaccine view and tonight is even worse.

The ball hits the ground 10 seconds into this clip. Verdugo gets to the ball (from LF) SIX SECONDS LATER. Six seconds where Duran stood and did nothing.
That’s absolutely unbelievable.
The ball hit the ground around 10 seconds, and you can see that Duran located it around 11 seconds, because he turned around and started walking slowly toward it. The only defensible response at that point is to sprint toward it like a madman, even if he's almost certain to get there after Verdugo.Jesus, people. He lost it, and by the time he figured out where it was, Dugie was obviously closer to the ball than him. I'm not even a fan of the kid, but context matters.
Am I crazy to for being confident Duran would have beat him to the ball once he saw it? Also where is the instinct to clean up your own mess? Embarrassing.Jesus, people. He lost it, and by the time he figured out where it was, Dugie was obviously closer to the ball than him. I'm not even a fan of the kid, but context matters.
Exactly. He gave up on the play and did nothing. He didn’t even try to go get it. He’s the CFer, he is ostensibly in charge out there and he’s got to go after it.The ball hit the ground around 10 seconds, and you can see that Duran located it around 11 seconds, because he turned around and started walking slowly toward it. no way he gave upJesus, people. He lost it, and by the time he figured out where it was, Dugie was obviously closer to the ball than him. I'm not even a fan of the kid, but context matters.
I’m not willing to let go of losing it to be honest. Not sure I’ve seen a ball misjudged that badly in a night game. Makes you wonder if he was daydreaming off the crack of the bat.Exactly. He gave up on the play and did nothing. He didn’t even try to go get it. He’s the CFer, he is ostensibly in charge out there and he’s got to go after it.
Losing the ball isn’t the issue. Not moving at all afterwards is. SIX SECONDS before Verdugo touched the ball.
In a night of knee-jerk hate-posting, this one takes the cakeI’m not willing to let go of losing it to be honest. Not sure I’ve seen a ball misjudged that badly in a night game. Makes you wonder if he was daydreaming off the crack of the bat.
I mean, shit happens. It’s bad, and shows he’s not a good fielder, but it happened and not due to lack of effort.I’m not willing to let go of losing it to be honest. Not sure I’ve seen a ball misjudged that badly in a night game. Makes you wonder if he was daydreaming off the crack of the bat.
Xander knows this GM isn’t committed to building a winning team in 2022. He’s also not willing to negotiate in good faith with the team leaders that are up for contracts, so why would he slap anyone around? He’s going to play out the string, opt out, and go somewhere where management actually cares about winning next year.Better be a hell of a players only after the game tonight. Xander needs to (figuratively) slap some people around.
I would prefer…Duran…No Mas Excuses.Great thread retitle.
I agree with this… lose it I the sun, lose it on the dirt, but you control your response to it. This is what you expect out of a summer intern over their head, let alone someone competing for 1/9 on the Boston Red Sox.Here’s the thing— he definitely lost the ball and maybe he didn’t know where it landed. But he likely saw it hit the warning track. And he certainly saw Dugie moving towards it. At that point, you hustle your ass off towards it. It’s just what you do.
You don’t control your circumstances but you control how you react. This will sit with Duran for some time. No matter what he says.
This. In September he turns 26. He’s no longer a prospect. He’s got a career .638 OPS. He’s a subpar fielder. And apparently he’s not all that interested in chasing down balls he’s f’d up.Just gonna say this - it's ridiculous that the Sox have a $200 or $220 payroll or whateverthefuck it is and their outfield, starter and bench included, is the worst since at least 1992, but arguably in franchise history. -0.3 war between the 3 starters is the worst since 1936.

Duran, if he were ever going to be an actual major league player, would have found his niche this year. He's simply not a major league player.
There's also this gem. What an unlikeable player.Edit #2 - His excuse was...counterfactual.

“It’s the most helpless feeling you could ever feel,” Duran said, as seen on NESN postgame coverage. “Until you guys catch a fly ball in twilight, let me know.”
https://nesn.com/2022/07/red-soxs-alex-cora-defends-jarren-duran-after-outfield-miscue/Things compounded for Duran as after the ball landed, he didn’t race back for it and instead watched Alex Verdugo hustle over from left field to grab the ball. Duran told reporters he didn’t try to attempt to go back to field the ball because he didn’t want to get in Verdugo’s way.
I could care less what he was thinking. I just know his reaction to the mistake was not to hustle. That’s enough for me.I've always been fascinated by how many mind-readers we have on this site.
For the record, here's what Duran said about the play

He was probably thinking he should do more research on it.I could care less what he was thinking. I just know his reaction to the mistake was not to hustle. That’s enough for me.
That's fine, and I agree. Others though posted as though they knew what was going on in his head at the timeI could care less what he was thinking. I just know his reaction to the mistake was not to hustle. That’s enough for me.
I agree. The camera angle makes it look worse because you can't see Verdugo already sprinting. Duran was standing still when he locates the ball. No way he beats Dugie to it. It was a really bad play all around but I'm not sure he quit. It looked that way on TV though.Jesus, people. He lost it, and by the time he figured out where it was, Dugie was obviously closer to the ball than him. I'm not even a fan of the kid, but context matters.
An on-field error followed by an off-field error. Being snarky with Boston media rarely works out well for players. There's also this gem. What an unlikeable player.

Yup. As egregious as the play was, the lack of accountability afterwards really sealed the deal for me. Get him the hell off the team yesterday. An on-field error followed by an off-field error. Being snarky with Boston media rarely works out well for players.
