“@Ken_Rosenthal: Two sources say that #Angels GM Jerry Dipoto packed up his office and left today. Club official: “Status quo here as of now.””

I didn't realize that Dipoto was a scout for the Sox in 2004 and thus has a WS ring.

Scioscia's wielding a lot of clout for a guy who won the WS 12 frigging years ago. He's become the Angels' Lasorda.

Dipoto was unhappy that manager Mike Scioscia and his coaches were ignoring the front office’s scouting data on defensive positioning and pitch selection. A meeting with the coaching staff on Friday turned contentious, and on Sunday, Dipoto met with the players to inform them they would be receiving the data directly, since he had no faith in their coaches to pass it along. That was untenable, and it lasted two days.

Deadspin.

If Dipoto was going directly to the players with the scouting data and bypassing the manager, it's a miracle that lasted 2 days. Teams can't work that way at all. Either get the manager on board with it, or fire him, or quit. Can't run an end-around like that.

Interestingly, the Sox were reported to be planning exactly that after 2003 even if they won the WS, since Grady was routinely ignoring the FO's scouting reports and analyses.

It's not like Dipoto has been surrounding Trout with talent.
Giavotella, Ianetta and Joyce have been replacement level or worse.
Freese and Kalhoun have been mediocre.
If Pujols hadn't bounced back this year, things would be even uglier.

I was thinking about this earlier this morning after reading reports he resigned. Whose to blame for that team contruction ? Hamilton Pujols and CJ Wilson were all blatant Moreno moves in ways that put Boston's chain of command parlor guessing game to shame. Due to those massive massive commitments it's been a couple years/offseasons of " O what's Arte going to want to do money wise ? Now I wouldn't have traded Kendrick for Heaney but I think focusing on Dipoto for the composition of the team w/o bashing Moreno is missing the elephant in the room.

What a dumpster fire
“@jonmorosi: Source: #Angels owner Arte Moreno and team president John Carpino are still trying to broker a peace between Dipoto and Scioscia.”

Not here
How the fuck does Sciosia still have a job? He's the most overmanaging manager in the game. His insistence on bunting and other stupid shit has to have cost them a fuckload of games over the years and just because it's hard to quantify he gets to keep fucking up.

16 years is too long for any manager. The message gets stale.

And if he ignores data that people bust their ass on, he should be fired.

Arte Moreno loves him. That became obvious when Dipoto's predecessor, Tony Reagins, was fired at least in part because he clashed with Scioscia. This is what Moreno said in 2013

“Mike has zero problems, OK?” Moreno told FoxSports.com. “This is his 14th year. Mike goes beyond what he does on the field. He’s a good person. He’s a good person in the community, a very good baseball guy. You don’t have to ask me. You just ask other managers, other baseball people.

“Look at 14 years worth of productivity. Look at his record. He has two World Series rings with the Dodgers. He has one with the Angels. We’ve been to the playoffs.”
