A win for the Bruins. Smith was vastly overpaid. I like Jimmy Hayes and he should come in at less money than Smith did.

Interesting. Hayes is cheaper this year but then will need to be re-signed. Don't like them getting older and think they gave up on Smith too quickly, but Hayes is a good guy to bring back.

Overall I'm ok with it.

He's older than Smith by about 18 months. Not that much older.

Just realized Hayes is an RFA, I thought he had one more year left. Interesting what they would sign him for, better be less than Smith's deal.

According to LeBrun Florida gets the Savard Contract too. Damn what a win

I'm not saying you're wrong, and no longer having to sweat the Savard LTIR exemption is nice, but why do you say it's a win?

So it clears over 7 million minus what they sign Hayes for.

Now we're moving here.

Would love to take this cap space and put together a deal for someone like Seabrook.

They shedded Smith's contract.

I'd be 100% on board with everything (even the Dougie stuff) if only there was no McQuaid/Rinaldo.

Shades of Jay Payton there. But yeah, removing the why Hamilton wanted out and McQuaid/Rinaldo, and this week looks a lot different from Sweeney.

They've had to be cap compliant on day 1 of the season with Savard's $4 million on the cap. Then they could put him on LTIR. It limited what they could do in free agency. They no longer have that obstacle in the offseason.

Moving the Savard contract was bound to happen with the big drop in actual financial commitment, but it's still a nice relief to see it happen.

Oh, I get that part. I'm more interested in why you think Hayes is such a big upgrade over Smith that it was a hands-down win just in that way.

The alternative is that they could be cap non-compliant by the amount of Savard's LTIR salary, but that $4.017m would not have become bankable cap space (i.e. to accumulate cap dollars to use at the deadline) once he got put on LTIR. In essence, the best way to maneuver it by far is to be compliant on day 1 and then get (Cap Hit + LTIR) minus (Salary Cap Max) as banked cap space.

Side note, I am so glad I don't have to think about the Savard contract anymore

I like the move. Smith's 2013-2014 season was propped up by the backdoor play on the powerplay that the Bruins busted out mid-season. He had six powerplay goals that year and 5 of them were on that set play from Soderberg. Once teams wised up to the move his production went down. He only had one PPG in the last 30 games of that season. If you take out those 5 goals his line drops to 15-31-46, which isn't too dissimilar from his numbers last season.

To his credit, he did have 2 PPG in the playoffs that year (none from Soderberg), but then in 2014-2015 he only had 1 PPG all season and it was on the set play from Soderberg in the very first game.

Good deal here. Bought out a year of free agency in it.

I'm curious to see how Julien deploys Hayes. Seems like he could be a nice fit on Krejci's right.

Agreed. To me this feels like he could turn into Horton-lite. My guess is they see who meshes best in camp, but there will be some match making for the Marchand/Bergeron line and Loui/Krejci (assuming they play together). Between Hayes, Connolly, Pasta, and now Beleskey it's going to be a very different group of forwards from opening night last year.

But for this year you essentially have Hayes and Connolly at Smiths contract. It's a good deal and a win for the Bruins.
