That, too. I'm fine trading him for real value, but I think it would be a mistake to send him out as a throw-in, say. We'll need AAA starting depth next year, too.Or . . . one or two more good starts and maximize his value.
Moncada goes yard
EDIT--twice
Hit the first guy with one of those 105 MPH pitches, you should be able to follow that with 27 K's.Kopech tonight--
5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K, 1 HBP(first batter of game); 85 pitches, 55 strikes
I doubt it. The Redsox don't seem to really care about that sort of thing. Xander didn't get much time at 3b before being called up in 2013 and playing the position for the WS stretch run. Mookie Betts moved from 2b to the OF with very little games played, although he played there in HS. Plus it isn't like if they move him to 3b now he'll suddenly forget how to play 2b. I'd bet money Mookie Betts could still play a decent 2b, too. It's good to be versatile.I wonder if the plan right now is to keep him at 2nd as Pedroia insurance given he has missed a ton of games the last 3 yrs and is going on 33. Perhaps worst case he isn't needed and can sub for Dustin a lot in Sept?
They probably would have to transition him to another position very, very soon if they were going to use him anywhere else this year. His defense has always been behind his bat. Still would be nice for him to have some flexibility to help this team down the stretch beyond more than just 2B.
Yeah. There were thunderstorms in Southern Maine and some counties even had tornado warnings. Not to distract from Moncada excitement, but why are there like 25 people at Hadlock? Were there rain delays that scared people off?
I am wonder if Moncada throws a wrinkle in the EE question. If Moncada and AB keep racking, I don't see how they don't break camp with the sox in 2017.I doubt it. I'd guess the only reason Moncada is still playing 2b is because it has been Redsox philosophy forever to keep a player at the toughest position possible until they prove they can't play it. If a need arises at the Major League level and they feel a player is ready to perform, that is when they change their positions. (see Bogaerts, Betts) They have shown they would be comfortable playing someone like Moncada at 3b/LF after he had maybe 5-6 games played in the minors without incident. It's not a big deal. I think we overrate how hard a time players have transitioning to new positions that are easier. Sure Hanley Ramirez happens sometimes, but it's the abnormality. Even he is doing ok at 1b.
I'd guess there is like a 20% chance Moncada would get more than a cup of coffee this year, and if he did, there was an injury on the field or the team traded Travis Shaw. Plus I think if he were called up this year, he'd probably split time in the OF and 2b/3b. But with the Hill acquisition and Chris Young coming back, and with Hernandez in AAA who is more than serviceable, where would he get time?

Not worried, there was once a young promising switch hitter who struck out a lot. He went on to become one of the greatest players of all time. His name was Mickey Mantle.Since his 2HR game, Moncada has gone 1/20 with 12K
Overslot signing from a northern high school. Definitely someone to watch.Anyone know anything about Tyler Hill? He's hitting really well for Lowell. Someone to keep an eye on or nothing to see here?
