Oh yeah, I heard that garbage on Tuesday about "only talking politics for 5 minutes". Kudos to them cuz this morning's absolute tripe actually got me to listen to Toucher and Rich and I found it amusing. Good work guys.

I'm sure they'll miss you. I heard their ratings took a beating this morning when you made your move...

This thread is 41 pages of "these guys suck... why do i listen to them... i am never listening again..." followed by same posters stating same general thing a few days later.

Like it or not, the roles they play as "instigators" and generally getting under your skin at times is good for ratings.

Is anything in my prior post incorrect?

Will they miss mikeford now that he's stomped off?
Is this thread endless trashing of D&C, yet often by the same people that swear them off?
Do their personas benefit ratings, or would they be better off being non-controversial?

I rarely post in this thread, because I actually did stop listening to D+C for the most part, but I wonder if you appreciate the irony of your posts.

Am I even using irony correctly here?

I don't particularly care. I listen to D&C sporadically at best. I think I may have posted in this thread before, but I'm not sure. I don't make the statements about qutting listening that others have.

I guess I'd just ask the following question; why do you keep reading the thread?

I tune in hoping for a call in guest (who are generally pretty good) and turn off within 30 seconds once the cacophony of right-wing politics or mindless bashing of player X begins. Obviously it's working, and working well for 'EEI in the ratings, but is it too much to expect reasonable sports talk on "sports talk radio"?

I'd love to hear more supporters of D'nC on this thread as I'm truly confused as to why they get the ratings and would like to know what it is that makes this show enjoyable.

You're missing the point. A show doesn't have to be enjoyable to get ratings.

I think BRH is more right then wrong about some of you guys who cry, bitch and moan about how much D&C suck... only to do the same fucking thing the next week.

I don't mind D&C but then again I am grumpy guy who likes shitting on people. I can see how it's not for everyone and I totally agree it's annoying when you want to hear sports and they are on some politcial tangent. I get that. But it's also what the show is... and has been for a long fucking time in the world of radio.

Guess what guys... the show is not going to change. EVER. Never ever.

Huntington...you want to know how it gets the ratings it does... read this thread.

My point is neither is this thread, so complaining about the thread is doing the exact same fucking thing as people complaining about this show. It turns into a circular argument/discussion, so the answer is to let the people bitch and moan and just not read the thread if that bothers you, or point out flaws in their reasoning and defend the show. Complaining about the complaints is even more useless than complaining about the show (more addressed toward BRK than you). Then again, so is complaining about complaints of the complaints, so I'm the worst of them all. Fuck me.

This comes from someone who reads the thread for entertainment purposes, but rarely listens to the show.

That's a fair point. I can't disagree that my complaining about the complainers is likely worse than the actual bitching/moaning in the first place.

I just find it humorous that the same people over and over and over come into a thread about a specific program just to bitch and say they won't listen again... only to listen soon thereafter and start the cycle over again. All the while not understanding how the show gets great ratings.

I don't think this is so "hilarious". There are two sports talk radio stations in Boston in the AM. Most people probably listen to one or the other, and occasionally flip at commercial breaks. If you're listening to T&R and flip to D&C during a commercial, there is approximately a 125% chance you're going to hear them say something radically conservative, retarded, or both. It's actually more infuriating that I can't even tolerate them for 5 minute doses than anything else.

Then get satellite radio.

If you know you have a 125% chance that you are going to be infuriated, then don't listen.

You guys are quick to call out D&C as these big retards but at the end of the day, they are getting paid millions of bucks and you guys are listening to something that you know won't like.

There are lots of people getting paid lots of money. Most of them are probably smarter than I am, some of them are not. If paycheck = intelligence then we've got bigger problems. It's a lazy an easy argument to make.

It's just not that astonishing that people are tuning into this show from time to time. It's one of the few options on the radio. All these posts about how hypocritical and simple people just aren't real valid. No matter what your preference is, it's not unreasonable to check in from time to time, that doesn't make you an avid listener or someone who props up their numbers while hating them all day every day.

Well, I guess the obvious question is...

Who else would you expect to be in here talking about them? The people that actually did swear them off (like myself) don't have much to contribute on the subject. I only read this thread because frankly I'd rather do that than work, but what strikes me is that it is uber-rare to read anyone actually agree with them or talk about how much they like them. Their success is a bit mistifying.

I just found them on an iphone app. Reading this thread I was expecting the worst. They're certainly not great radio but they're not bad to leave streaming on the iphone in the car while I'm listening to Boomer and Carton in the morning here. I've definitely heard way, way better but it's not the worst stuff that I've ever heard ever.

I stopped listening long ago because I found the sports talk, which is occasionally interesting, not worth enduring the political idiocy. Now that I've moved to NC, it's not even an issue.

That said, I do like to check in here from time to time to keep my hate fresh.

Jonathan Kraft took a shot this morning at D&C for being off-track this week with politics. At least they didn't have the lack of sense to claim it was only 5 minutes per day.

I've actually enjoyed D&C this week on my commute, since my commute now is pretty much restricted to their headlines segment, it was nice to hear Scott Brown two days in a row since all of the commericials I see are that he is the devil and hates rape victims.

I'm a conservative though, most of the time they piss me off, but I like that they are actually giving the underdog a voice in a state where he doesn't have many options.

Come on, they aren't doing it out of the goodness of their heart. They're doing it because they're big time Republicans and he's a Republican. They aren't doing it out of a noble feeling of civic duty.

Are intentionally keeping him off the air today? I guess it's possible he set up a doctor's appointment or something six months ago before he realized when the election would be held, but it seems like they would have said that instead of just saying he's out today with no explanation.

Still it's nice to see more exposure for someone who's willing to fight for the little guy (literally in this case) against those elitest, fat-cat rape victims.

Callahan seems to not be able to grasp the "Any Given Sunday" concept in the NFL. For the past two weeks, the bonehead has been fellating Peyton Manning (greatest QB ever according to him) and the Colts saying there's absolutely no way they will lose the Super Bowl. New Orleans obviously made it this far because they were lucky. They have no defense to speak of. And, of course, they're NFC. Kind of like how the Giants were NFL two years ago.

Switched over during a commercial break on T&R to listen to headlines on D&C. Scott Brown called in to challenge Gerry based on GC slamming him for his recent Jobs bill vote and while initially starting to challenge Brown quickly backed off and allowed Dennis to finish the call.

During that call it made me realize one of the things that I despise about GC, the way he said "RINO" just dripped with the same kind of disgust usually reserved by most normal people for pedophiles and rapists. It was nice to see Brown openly challenge him with "Did you even read the bill Gerry?".

The way Callahan talks about the Red Sox makes me cringe.

It's not that he's negative, that's fine with me. But the way he mocks run prevention, and even a stat like OPS just makes him seem primitive.

And also repeatedly calling Jeremy Hermida, Jeremy "Hermidia," after he was corrected on multiple occasions. It just really rubbed me the wrong way, for some reason.

Anyone hear Jackie Mac with Callahan today? I listened for a bit from 715-730 and she quickly called him out on 2 points:

Re: Kevin Faulk becoming a free agent --

QUOTE
C: Losing Faulk would be a huge loss. Would create a huge hole on the team etc
M: I wouldn't say huge, he's a 3rd down back
C: Well, I didn't mean huge exactly but we can't afford to lose him

Re: Oscars

QUOTE
C: Something about Dennis loving Avatar and that it would win an Oscar
M: Agreement to Avatar winning Best Picture
C: "Yeah, but I could see that little woman winning for Hurt Locker"
M (and you could her it in her voice): Little woman?

Listening to commercials on 985 was better today at 715 than listening to WEEI. Callahan was going on and on about how the Patriots are a far worse team now than the Jets, all because they didn't sign Boldin. Dennis tried to rationalize with him that they've signed Bodden, Wilfork and TBC, but to Gerry, all of those pale in comparison to the Boldin non-trade/non-signing. He didn't care that they resigned anybody and clearly wanted a flashy FA signing. Didn't matter that Bodden was a FA at the time.

At one point Dennis and Callahan were yelling at each other about this. I turned it off shortly thereafter. I'm not sure how that makes for good radio when it's just two people talking over each other for 10 minutes at a go.

Lobel was hating on Joshua Sacco's Miracle speech. Both he and Meter were saying that it was "awkward" and "uncomfortable" and they didn't really find it funny. Lobel said that if you were sitting home alone watching it, then yes it was pretty funny. But being around 38000 fans that had no idea what was going on made it much less funny. Lobel seems to think that nobody at Fenway knew what it was about. It was hard to tell watching on TV, but the Red Sox dugout seemed to think it was pretty hilarious.

GC said he thought it was great and that there was nothing wrong with it.

It was very anti-Duke. He hates the school because of the Duke lacrosse story. He feels the school sold out the lacrosse players and the the lacrosse coach. All over Krzyzewski for not sticking up for the fired coach.

It was just weird, I listened off and on from 7:15-7:45, he was yammering and making weird inappropriate jokes that made no sense. Callahan and Meter kept making jokes about him "having another". It was just uncomfortable.

I'm surprised this isn't getting much discussion here. I hated the speech. I understand it was taken from a movie, but I take exception to a 5 year old saying "goddamn" and "screw em" in a public forum such as this. If my niece or nephew ever said such things, I wouldn't see them for the next two months. I'm not surprised Callahan loved it.

Example 2,846,104 of why Gerry Callahan is insufferable at times.
This morning, he and Bob Lobel (filling in for John Dennis) and talking to Shonda Schilling today about her book The Best Kind of Different: Our Family’s Journey with Asperger’s Syndrome. They take calls, a gentleman calls in, says he’s 28, was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome a few years back, talks about dealing with it as a kid, it’s clearly a struggle for him to be on the phone with them, at the end he says he’d like to read the book, and asks where can he buy it…
“Try the bookstore” Callahan sneers, “That’s a good place to find books.”
They move on, come back from the break, and mention that they’ve gotten a flood of calls, emails and text messages complaining about how Gerry treated the guy.
“I’m sorry,” Callahan says in his patented whine/sneer. “I was being serious. The guy asked where to buy the book so I told him to go to the bookstore.”
