I think possibly the worst thing about this show is the guy who does those unfunny impersonations when they come back from commercial break.

Who is this guy, and who finds these bits amusing?

I agree his name is Pete Gustin. This morning around 7am or so they played one of his 'zany' bits coming back from commercial. The painful bit had him acting like the new clock format has meter doing traffic reports and John and Gerry doing horoscopes/ weather/ time checks etc, like all the schtick from a typical morning zoo show. I couldn't believe what I was hearing and thought John and Gerry or anyone cannot think that bit was funny. It was cringe worthy.

Good interview with Esiason today.

Interesting that Boomer Esiason will continue to join D&C through out the football season, even though WFAN is owned by CBS...

D&C are at their best in their interviews with Boomer. Sometimes listening to the three of them I actually think that D&C are nice guys.

Then I listen to the rest of their show and realize they're total assholes.

I thought so too when they announced it. Just a guess but it probably has something to do with contractual obligations. Plus I think the fee that Boomer would receive goes to his charity.

Callahan just treated that guy from PETA like he was an alien. I'm personally not a massive fan of PETA when it comes to their approach with Vick, but I give credit to the representative for not hanging up on those two assholes. Asking him questions about swating flies, please.

I'll give Toucher and Rich a try...

As Toucher and Rich put it yetserday during their quick appearance on Felger & Mazz, D&C are just a couple of cantankerous old guys ranting about the younger generation and lefties. And it makes for lousy radio. They're right. Eventually they're going to be left with an audience of Irish-American golfers in their 40s, 50s and 60s. Nothing agianst Irish-American golfes in their 40s, 50s and 60s -- some of my best friends fit that description :) -- but if that's all they want, I guess they can have it.

"If Francona had any respect for Buchholz, he would have left him out there to finish the 5th and qualify for a win."

--Gerry Callahan

That's funny. Because we all know that had Tito left him in and then Buchholz coughed up the lead, Callahan would have have had a hissy-fit this morning about how dumb it was for Tito to leave him in just so Buchholz could qualify for a win.

Interesting to see them not discussing Ted Kennedy's death much -- they mentioned it in the open and then segued into Sox talk (not sure if the talked about it during Headlines). I'm guessing it was an order from above to stay away from it. Even in the open they weren't very political, other than a comment or two about the controversey over re-writing the law to name his replacement.

Absolutely agree that they were likely told not to talk about it by upper management. It would have been a shitstorm had they constantly talked about it all morning.

I turn on the Jimmyfund telethon this morning to hear a young kid being interviewed who was at spring training. First thing out of Meter's mouth..."did they all treat you well, there were no Manny's right?"

Then a follow up question of who was the nicest to you. The answer was Youkilis. Callahan just says wow, Dennis chimes in saying well yea he is good at that stuff, he's not happy now but..."

I mean are you kidding? They can't drop their agendas on a day like this? This is the first day I have tuned into them since 98.5 started and it was strictly for the Jimmy Fund Telethon. Unbelievable they can still turn people off with snide comments during a day about raising money for a cause like this.

Topics in order today:

Red Sox - Is Lester the ace, or is Beckett?
Red Sox - If they won last night, the Rays would be out of it
Why doesn't anyone watch tennis, horse racing or boxing anymore
Ted Kennedy - Does the majority of the US hate him or like him?
Barack - Did he have a high approval rating when he was elected? Is it 42 or 46% now?
Red Sox - Why can't they get guys like Brad Penny and John Smoltz

At this point, I listened to robot voicemails on 985 (or whatever they're called)

Don't forget Callahan's endorsement of Curt Schilling for Senator.

"I don't want a guy with experience," he said. "I'd vote for Joe the Plumber in a second because he isn't tied down to interest groups."

No. You'd vote for Joe the Plumber because you're a fucking moron.

D&C is almost completely impossible to listen to now. I turned it on for ten minutes, heard Callahan's rant about Ted Kennedy and wanted to stab myself in the ear. (by the way partnering him with Neumie is worse then Dennis, since Neumie is incapable of slowing that train) Although I didn't hear it, I have to guess Neumie was the one who brought up the topic of why doesn't anyone watch tennis, horse racing or boxing anymore, since he seems to be the only one who gives a shit about those sports. If the itinerary above is an accurate portrayal of today's show, I clearly didn't miss anything.

It's been said, but the biggest problem with GC is not what his opinions are, it's how he presents them.

I'm a staunch libertarian that leans right on many things, and as such, I agree with GC sometimes. But they way he makes his arguments and demonizes and insults anyone who disagrees is nauseating. And then, to be completely hypocritical, he whines when Obama, Reid and Pelosi do the same thing to the town hall protesters. You can't have it both ways, Gerry. You can't deride others for using the same exact methods you employ.

Esiason seems to be the rare pro athlete who likes sports other than his own and can hold an intelligent conversation about them. in the Bay Area we had Rick Barry doing the midday show and it was painful to listen to, because he would talk about the Warriors (who at the time hadn't been interesting in a decade) than the Giants being in the playoffs or whatever.

Dickerson and Deossie?

Yesterday the Big Show was hosted by Buckley, and had Larry Johnson and Fred Smerlas. Today D & C get these two nitwits?

Well, it is the day before Labor Day. I bet the crew for "The Big Show" today consists of Stearns hosting, with LJ and Billy Burt.

However, with 98.5 running out its regular hosts today, I will have no need to flip over to EEI, except during the "Dale and Holley" show, because even their fill-in hosts are far better than Tanguay and Zolak.

Today I didn't feel like listening to Toucher and Rich because they were talking Pats and I wanted to hear something about last night's Sox win, so I switched the Dennis and Callahan. Lo and behold, they were talking Sox. This went on for about a minute or two and then they went to the phones. Some chucklehead called and said that Massachusetts liberals are bullies and that we "need" Curt Schilling in office because "he'll get things done".

That's all Callahan needed to hear and he spent the next few minutes going off about how Schilling will be a "much better Senator" than Ted Kennedy because Kennedy did nothing but give away taxpayers' money.

After that, I changed the station. Glad to know that nothing has changed.

What kills me is that I actually enjoy listening to Callahan discuss sports. If they could just keep the politics to one segment, and not let it spill into the rest of the show, they would have a lot more listeners.

I've listened to the show maybe a dozen times and always enjoyed it when the topic was sports. I stopped listening last spring after I realized it wasn't just sport talk radio. Why they see the need to go off into politics and other news is beyond me. It really takes away from the good thing they have going.

I definitely agree. I've heard Callahan paired with Felger once in a while, and thought they were fantastic. Why? Because Felger simply didn't care about Callahan's political opinions. He didn't really agree or disagree, so he didn't set Gerry off or egg him on further, the way Dennis does. Instead, they discussed their common ground - sports. And when Callahan would offer one of his ridiculous unsupported assertions (e.g., Manny kicks puppies and steals lunch money from the Jimmy Fund kids), Felger would call him on it, forcing Callahan to retreat to a more reasonable position. And when he's forced to actually articulate his point, he's pretty knowledgeable and interesting. It's too bad, because if that was the norm I'd never listen to Toucher and Rich.

Well, T&R have been on in the mornings since last Thanksgiving. Granted, the sports-talk thing has been there for barely a month, but the show itself has been there for some time. It's not like they're brand new on the scene.

So...if the rumors about WEEI moving to 93.7 and WRKO moving to 107.3 are true, does Callahan achieve his dream and become the morning guy on Howie Carr's afternoon drive station? The Hill-man show currently on 107.3 would become the EEI morning show, leading into Dale & Holley, and offering a younger-skewing demographic and a counter-balance to T&R on 98.5. Meanwhile, D&C talk a little sports, a little golf, a lot of politics and news...and are a better fit for RKO's lineup: 10-12 with Laura Ingraham, 12-3 with RUSH and 3-6:30 with Howie Carr. RKO's meat-iest demographic is the males 35-55 and that's where D&C live - older, conservative, white males.

Well they DID tell the story. We will soon find out if they still do now that there is an actual competitor in the market.

I just hope nobody is expecting a dramatic shift in ratings so soon.

I always liked D&C, at least early on. Once they became King of the Hill they figured they could push their political agenda and it turned a number of folks off, but unfortunately it didn't effect the ratings. My hope was that competition would force them to focus more on sports, but it seems the opposite has happened... they defiantly continue to force their politics, perhaps even harder than before.

I expect any ratings drain from D&C to be a slow trickle. I don't know for sure, but it seems the strategy Sports Hub is taking is attack the weak link; putting Felger & Mazz opposite the "Big Show Shouting Match" is, to me, a stroke of genius. D&C are so entrenched, might as well go after the evening drive time slot. Perhaps, over time, people get in their car in the morning and don't flip it back to EEI. Dale and Holley focus exclusively on sports, but the mid-day show isn't as much of a concern as the two drive-time slots.

EDIT: Forgot to echo the sentiments of CreightonGubanich. Felger and Callahan was an awesome combination for the very reasons you mentioned. I don't want to go so far and say that the Sports Hub recognized that too and wanted to derail the Felger/Callahan combo, but in retrospect I think it was a brilliant move.

This morning I was listening to "Toucher and Rich" and they went to a commercial, so I flipped to EEI. Instead of Dennis and Callahan I'm greeted by the pipes of Butch Stearns shrieking "The Yankee pitchers have no playoff experience!" followed by Greg Dickerson stammering followed by Stearn saying, "On our lines next, Frank from Gloucester!" followed by changing the station to NPR.

That was 30 seconds of pure terror.
